Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1a delayed until Jan. 9th?

BG's Corner

SonyStyle.com used to report a shipping date of December 8th for the X1a, but that date has came and went (almost). We rung up our rep at Sony Cierge (Sony’s concierge service) on Madison Avenue in New York City, and they advised us that the X1a will not be shipping until January 9th. At post time SonyStyle.com is now reporting a January 12th ship date. Oh well. We’ll stick to our other X1 for the time being… Is there anyone else waiting for this thing, or have you just bought an AT&T HTC Fuze and called it day?

I wanted the x1 more than anything. But I did buy a fuze and I love it.

Hm, Sony doesn’t learn, does it?!

It has been burned for the last 10 years by the Korean brands that provided the same quality products for 1/3 of the price. Yet, Sony continues to release “nothing special” products and price them as if they were made of gold. I don’t see many of X1a to be sold at around $1000 price point. You can get a very good laptop nowadays for much less. Not to mentioned that other cell phones are backed by carriers and will cost you under $200 each.

  • twozeroone

Agreed – Noone is going to buy this phone

    Good job Sony!

Not only did you have to issue a recall on your primary 11/28 launch date, but you’ve also just blown the transplant window for dissatisfied Fuze owners too.

You can’t even deliver a display model in any of your stores for the Xperia either.

What will you think of next?

  • Ryan Everhard

Yep, bought a Fuze and called it a day. I figured the X1a would be delayed a while anyway, and I would not be paying unlocked prices for it when it comes (~$600 I presume), so I just figured I’d wait and see what pans out until ATT has the X1 (6 months probably). By then maybe the HTC HD will be here.

  • Evan

A few X1a’s did trickle out. I got one. With that said, this had to be the worse product launch ever.

This phone looks older & older every single day it’s also too expensive for a windows mobile device cause a $99 Moto Q does pretty much the same as this

I’m not surprised at all, I kinda believe that sheet that said the x1 wasn’t coming out til Feb ’09. So if they make it a month early I’m sure nobody will still break their Saving accts to buy this mid-level product. They shouldve at least took win-mo off and put android on it I’m sure that wouldve put some life back in the device.

  • ahmed

Sony has done this for every smart phone they manufactured. starting all the way from the p800. What the hell is sony doing ?!
saying that … ill probably still get this.
I never learn. another month of waiting.

That sucks for the people who were waiting for this device to come out. I can’t stand it when the carriers push back release dates, but I’d much rather they do that then the product come out prematurely and become a failure.

  • civilian

so I heard that best buy will sell it at a subsidised price when you purchase it with a contract.

is this b.s. and heresay??? sounds like it but i just wanted to make sure.

  • BocAle

The launch in Argentina is still 22/12, but at u$s 1500 not many are going to buy it…

    People -

Your HTC devices powered by Qualcomm chips are under performing. HTC has not addressed its driver issue from last year. You are paying way too much for a device that does the basics well, but falls flat when tested with multi-media.

If you are going to buy HTC, get devices only with TI’s OMAP chips.

So I got the xperia x1a and I am unsure if i want to keep it. I see that the date was pushed back and feel fortunate that I was able to get one. I am having a difficult time justifying the $870 dollars I spent on the xperia x1a.
What say you? Should I be patient and wait of the x1 to develop more tools? or should I move on?

Being a PalmOS user since the first Palm Pilot (1000 thru Treo680) I patiently waited for the xPeria for me to go WinMo. I finally bought the Treo Pro. It runs great and being my first WM device, it’s form factor makes the transition easier. I figured that next summer the TouchHD Pro (keyboard and HD screen) will be coming out or the rumored iPhone with Keyboard. Honestly, I’d have the iPhone now if it had a keyboard.

  • ronzan

typical sony….always taking their sweet time.

  • Ryan Everhard

    @Loki –

Umm… yea I would have a hard time justifying that price too!!! If you’re thinking of selling, I’d sell it asap before the price starts dropping like a crack ho’s pants.

I have waited on this phone like a virgin anticipating my first ever encounter. The constant delays coupled with the hefty price tag is just not worth the aggrevation. Although I placed everything on owning this device, and chose to wait,I have had it. In a strange kind of way I knew this would happen, and still I did not prepare for life without the X1. I love sony products but it is time to scrap my X1 dreams.

With that said, YES I am in the market for a suitable replacement. I have looked at the Fuze (smaller screen than I care to have) which I have played with and seems to function great once it got used to my touch. I also gave thought to the Eternity (before at&t removed WinMo from it…go figure) neat device just not for me. The Incite and its scroll wheel is to BBish. I have even contemplated switching to Verizon just to get the Omnia (i also scrapped that idea). which leaves the Nokia N97. So, if anyone has any suggestions please do share.

  • Gadgetman

    Evan,

How is it and is it worth the wait?

  • Loki

Well guys, I will be shipping the phone tomorrow back to Sony.
Dont get me wrong, nice phone. Features are awesome but takes a while to get used to.
My biggest gripe was the signal integrity. I live in Washington State and used it on the ATT Network. Everywhere I went, I only had 2 bars. I tried some tweaks and that did not fix the issue. Everytime I took my phone out of my pocket, I would either have several missed calls or messages. I believe that one of the issues is the aluminum case. If the signal was better, I would definitely keep the phone. I dont know if that will be addressed in the future, but the price for the phone also is not easy to justify. For everyone else out there that has it, enjoy it. At least, in the process I made several people jealous, lol. What am I going back to? Honestly, an iPhone 3G. I am a IT Tech and I need a toy. Windows I know pretty well and yes, I will be heading towards the dark side, and i kinda miss it. lol

Gadgetman: import a GSM Omnia if you want outstanding multimedia and don’t care about 3G.
N97 isn’t worth waiting for if it’s going to be the same cpu and chipset as even older Nokias.
FUZE is still your least evil device out there and VGA.
LG Incite is still Qualcomm but has better video drivers than any HTC — however it’s WQVGA and no keyboard/dpad.
Epix is BBish/Treo Proish, but no 3D support.

  • Gadgetman

    NuShrike

Thanks for the advice, but yet I have one final question(s). Lets say I import the Omnia, will it have WinMo installed and will it work on at&t’s network?

  • NuShrike

Gadgetman: it’ll have WinMob on it, it will work on at&t’s network, or t-mobile.. just no 3G on either.

  • Lesko

Don’t bother with Xperia. I had one for a month and gave it away. What a joke that product is. I have an HTC HD now…………great product!

  • Gadgetman

    Lesko,

why did you give it away and how is the HTC HD working?
