Verizon’s BlackBerry Storm challenge hits San Francisco, 100 Storms given away

Exclusive

We just got a first hand report that Verizon is setting up a BlackBerry Storm challenge in San Francisco. Here is the deal… in Justin Hermann Plaza in downtown San Francisco, Verizon has setup what you see above. It’s a BlackBerry Storm challenge station consisting of a giant plastic box that shoots air from the bottom to create a whirlwind of Verizon business cards. Contestants step inside and if they can pluck at least seven black BlackBerry Storm cards out of the chaos in the allotted time, they get a free Storm. There’s 100 of them being given out but unfortunately winners won’t get their hands on them until the official release. We’re also told Verizon is taking this challenge on the road to other cities across the US soon. Hit the jump for larger pics!

Thanks, Kenneth!

damn…… I wish i worked in SF. I woulda taken lunch as soon as I heard about this event. I doubt there will be any there by the time i get there tonight

So here’s the follow up as I just went back to the booth to get more information.

    - They will be hitting up five more cities after SF, but they don’t know which ones yet.
    - It was scheduled to run until 7PM tonight, but as so many people were winning so fast, they may end before 4pm. That being said, by the time I got up to the booth, they had already given out around 50 devices.
    - They may have to change the rules in the next city as too many folks were grabbing tickets stuck to the ceiling and walls which makes it too easy.
    - You need to grab 7 tickets in 30 seconds.
    - The marketing group who is organizing the event is called Momentum.
    - You get a free cookie with a picture of a storm cloud. Tastes like crap, but you need it while waiting in line the 30-40 minutes.
    - Someone in the audience complained that if we get a free phone, Verizon should throw in a free year to go with it. So a few minutes later they announced that they would be giving a $50 certificate towards activation for winners.
    - They don’t know the official launch date yet, but they seem to think it was definitely happening this month and likely before Thanksgiving.
    - Yes, I won a free phone.

how the hell do you find out what cities they are going to? can someone ask them?

I just got back as well. The next city is definitely going to be Chicago and they’re going to be changing up the rules there to make it harder.

When I went, about 19 of 20 people in front of me won…I did NOT want to be the idiot who couldn’t do it, ha. I threw up a few pics and a video of the booth…

I hope they come to Phoenix so I can win one and get it working on Sprint to ditch my crappy Blackberry Curve 8330

got there at about 2:30pm and they were all out, still had the booth up, but people were only playing for jabra bluetooths. Chicago is next from what i heard, and i spoke to one of the verizon reps, and she had me send her the link to this post in an email. pretty cool i think she might be one of the marketers for the event.

It’s over… :( The rain got the best of the storm…

When is it coming to Chicago? I’m in Chicago.

I WON! I raced to SF (about 25 minutes away) and got in line, waited about 2 1/2 hours and got one! Well worth the wait, I LOVE VERIZON. You also get a $50 gift card (accessories or bill). They were basically giving them away, about 95% of people who tried won-super easy. This totally made my day.

I dunno if I can drive to chicago (its 4 hours away) but man I am tempted. Doubt that it will come to Detroit :(

Will this thing be there tomorrow in SF? Or will it move on somewhere?

  • Irene

    California…red?

  • TJ

i was told they will be available on the 11th in the Sacramento area.

  • B

The ‘challenge’ was merely waiting in line for two hours. Only two people in that time failed to win a phone.

P.S. I just did the Storm Hunt in NYC…I went during lunch and found a bumch of people around the area looking as well. The locations were relatively close to each other and I got to 3 locations but it took my ass forever to figure out what the clue was or else I could’ve gotten to a lot more. You just go inside…txt the clue and pick up a scavanger hunt map with the picture of the Storm in the front. Most of the stores are clothing and accessories stores that contain them.

Okay, so I won one of the phones and I’m pretty psyched about it (definitely due for an upgrade). However, that was a while ago, the phone has been out for a week now and I still haven’t received it. Has anyone else gotten theirs yet?

  • b

Still haven’t received mine. Contacted the marketing company (momentumww.com) and they indicated that the phones would go out sometime after November 21st. They also mentioned that the phones should be received prior to January 1st. Seems like a rather large window, but that is what I’ve been told.

    Hi,
just want to give updates for those that are waiting for the Storm.
I won the phone during Storm challenge in SF.
    I just got it today…YESSSS.

So, for those that are still waiting, it’s coming :) )

ps. You can always email the marketing company if you don’t get yours shortly. The email is on the back of the winning card they gave you when you won the phone.

    Happy holiday.
