Some people usually make the mistake of dismissing certain iPhone features after labeling them as minimal upgrades compared to last year’s model. But then, last year’s model may have brought over minimal improvements compared to the two-year-old device. That’s because Apple likes to build on its past innovations and add new useful features each year, even if some of them may seem unimportant at the time.

That’s not the case for this year’s iPhone cameras. The iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus cameras bring over significantly improved cameras, and a comparison between the original iPhone and the iPhone 7 Plus shows how far Apple has come with its smartphone camera technology.

Apple is not a camera company, some will say, and they might be right. Apple does not make standalone cameras. But it has an impressive team that’s able to come up with impressive features for a camera that sits in your pocket or purse.

That’s why The Verge’s iPhone 7 Plus vs. original iPhone camera comparison is very telling, as it shows us where Apple started with the first iPhone camera, and where we are now.

“It was fascinating to shoot pictures on this iconic phone for the first time in years. It made me realize just how far cameras in iPhones (and most other smartphones for that matter) have progressed over the decade,” James Bareham writes. “The iPhone 2G was a revolutionary smartphone which also had a camera; the iPhone 7 is truly remarkable camera that you can also use to call your mother on a Sunday.”

Yes, the iPhone 7 Plus camera is amazing. Read this review to understand the technical details, and check out this astonishing photo and video review to see the cameras put to the test. Also check The Verge‘s photo comparisons at this link.
