Although the idea of owning a car with Android Auto or Apple CarPlay might sound like a dream come true, it’s far too cost-prohibitive for the average consumer. So what do you do if you want a connected car without breaking the bank?
A voice-activated heads-up display might do the trick.

This week, a San Francisco startup unveiled a device they’re calling HeadsUP!, which is an aftermarket heads-up display that sits on your dashboard and wirelessly connects to your smartphone to gather information. Even better, the team has integrated Amazon’s Alexa Voice Services so that drivers can control the device by voice.
“True HUDs are designed to give drivers information without distraction, and importantly, keep drivers’ eyes from re-focusing on smartphones and navigation units inside a vehicle,” explains the HeadsUP! team.
The device itself sits on the dashboard at the front of your car. It doesn’t need to be plugged in, and can last up to 8 hours between charges with “average daily car use.” Any iOS or Android 5.0+ smartphone will be compatible with HeadsUP!, and the team plans on adding Windows Phone support soon after launch.
Not only can you place a phone call or send a text message, but you’ll also be able to connect your car’s audio system to HeadsUP!, ask Alexa for directions, and even set the temperature in your home — all with a few simple voice commands.
You can preorder HeadsUP! from the company’s website today for a discounted price of $299.99. When it launches in the fall, the company plans on charging $499.99.
