Google wants to suck your blood

Yes, I’m being complete serious: Google does want to suck your blood. Per The Verge, Google has filed a patent application for a needle-free blood drawing device that pokes a tiny hole in your finger and then sucks up your blood into a negative pressure barrel. What’s particularly interesting here is that Google’s contraption will use gas pressure inside the device to fire a micro-particle into your skin that will create a hole just large enough to draw out blood.

In its application, Google says that this kind of technology “might be used to draw a small amount of blood, for example, for a glucose test” to help treat people with diabetes. Here’s a diagram showing the proposed device in action:

These sort of technology could also be used on a smartwatch-type device capable of keeping track of other fitness data, as you can see in this proposed concept:

This patent doesn’t mean that Google is actually going to release such a device, of course, but it’s always interesting to see some of the bold ideas the company is cooking up behind the scenes.
