Huge Galaxy S8 leak reveals photos and specs months before announcement

Galaxy S8 leak

A steady stream of Galaxy S8 leaks have been making their way online over the past several weeks, but this afternoon, the dam finally burst. VentureBeat’s Evan Blass (@evleaks) published a comprehensive report on Thursday describing each and every component and feature of Samsung’s upcoming flagship phone, and even provided a never-before-seen photo of the device, which you can see below.

According to Blass, the details shared by the Guardian earlier this week regarding the two models having displays that take up a vast majority of the front of the device were true. Blass says that there will be two Galaxy S8 models — one with a 5.8-inch and another with a 6.2-inch QHD Super AMOLED display.

The displays reportedly take up 83% of the front panel, leaving no room for physical buttons or interactive sensors on the front of the device. Both screens also curve around the side of the handset, which means that both models will effectively be Galaxy S8 “edge” models. You can see what it will look like below:

As has become standard in recent years, some models of the Galaxy S8 will feature Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 835 processor, while others will include Samsung’s own Exynos chipset, but both will utilize 10nm tech. This will supposedly allow the S8 to be 11% faster than the S7 overall.

The Galaxy S8 is also said to be 20% more power efficient than its predecessor, which is especially important because the 5.8-inch model and 6.2-inch model are reportedly equipped with 3000mAh and 3500mAh batteries, respectively. With such massive displays, power consumption will be a concern.

As for the rest of the specs, Blass’s report claims that Samsung will stick with 4GB of RAM for another generation, but will upgrade the standard internal storage to 64GB, as opposed to 32GB. On the bottom of the device sits a USB-C charging port, a 3.5mm headphone jack and stereo speakers.

While the 12-megapixel rear camera and 8-megapixel front camera won’t receive major upgrade this time around, Samsung is bringing visual search functionality to the phone and is placing a sensor for iris scanning alongside the selfie camera, which all of you scorned Note 7 users should appreciate. It’s also worth noting that the fingerprint sensor has been moved to the back of the phone, just to the side of the rear camera. Of all the design choices Samsung made, this is undoubtedly the most curious.

Other features of the Galaxy S8 include the desktop view-enabling Samsung DeX (which we covered in detail earlier today), the Bixby digital assistant and pressure-sensitive force touch.

Finally, Blass says that Samsung will unveil the two Galaxy S8 models at an event in New York on March 29th. The phones will go on sale in Europe on April 21st: €799 for the 5.8-inch model and €899 for the 6.2-inch model, which translates to roughly $850 and $960, respectively.
