Fallout has proven to be the Prime Video release of the year so far, hands down. Any which way you slice it — whether you use Nielsen, Reelgood, FlixPatrol, or even Amazon’s own data — this adaptation of the beloved video game franchise has proven a resounding success with streaming audiences. And because it’s not only pleased hardcore fans of the games but also brought in new fans, as well, Prime Video has wisely already green-lit a second season.
The show still has a near-perfect 93% score on Rotten Tomatoes — but, as great as the show is, it was also inevitable that it wouldn’t stay on top forever. In fact, a new Prime Video release has just bumped the show out of the #1 position on the streamer’s Top 10 chart.
That new title? It’s actually a movie — more specifically, a romantic comedy starring Anne Hathaway titled The Idea of You. It’s based on a book by Robinne Lee, and it’s about a woman who starts dating a famous musician who’s younger than she is. This is also quite an interesting movie release for Prime Video, because this particular film actually debuted on the streamer first instead of cinemas getting first dibs.
Prime describes The Idea of You as a “contemporary” love story, wherein Hathaway’s “Solène” is a 40-year-old single mother who gets caught up in an unexpected romance with a 24-year-old boy band singer (played by Nicholas Galitzine). “When Solène must step in to chaperone her teenage daughter’s trip to the Coachella Music Festival after her ex bails at the last minute,” Prime explains, “she has a chance encounter with Hayes and there is an instant, undeniable spark.”
The two strike up a romance, filled with sparks and instant chemistry, but it isn’t long before the obvious challenges make themselves apparent — like the strangeness of an ordinary woman dating a superstar, and the glare of the spotlight that entails.
Critics are certainly liking what they’ve seen. The movie has a fairly solid 84% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes, as of this writing. The audience score there is a bit lower (68%), but it’s nonetheless still got high marks on Amazon’s platform itself, with 4.5 stars there.
Sorry, Fallout; this was going to happen eventually, with another Prime Video release taking your place. And The Idea of You’s time at #1 almost certainly won’t be very long, given that Prime Video’s biggest series of them all is set to return in just a few weeks. That would be The Boys Season 4, which debuts on June 13.
