With hundreds and hundreds of emoji already in existence it’s a wonder any of us even bother to use actual words anymore. Apparently there just aren’t enough of the quirky little icons to depict every possible emotion, object, and idea, so the emoji big shots at the Unicode Consortium decided we need a bunch more. The group has proposed 137 new icons — some of which are altered or updated versions of existing emoji — which it is planning on adding when the Unicode 10 update launches later this year, and here they are.
The images below were created by Emojipedia, which created them based on their Unicode descriptions, and since each vendor decides how an emoji will look on its own platform, there’s a good chance these could change dramatically between operating systems.
There’ splenty of interesting stuff here, like an emoji for curling, juggling, and a couple of pretty friendly looking dinosaurs. There’s also a breastfeeding emoji, a half-empty glass of scotch, a wizard and a zombie. As always, each of the emojis featuring a human character will appear in both male and female variants — except for the breastfeeding and pregnancy emoji, we have to assume.
We don’t know for certain exactly when the new emoji will make it to each individual platform, and Apple in particular has a bit of a history of waiting a bit before integrating new emoji into its own systems. That being said, all or at least the vast majority of the emoji you see here will likely end up on iPhone, Android devices, and pretty much everywhere else before long.
