Sony’s biannual releases have been a blessing and a curse. On one hand, the Xperia line is one of the more visible smartphone lines on the market with four flagship releases in less than two years. On the other, the minor iterations from one model to the next have culminated in the Xperia Z3v, a device which doesn’t stack up against any of the best Android devices. If a leak from AndroidOrigin is to be believed, that might finally change in a big way with the next generation.

According to the same source who uncovered the Xperia Z3 Compact earlier this year, Sony will debut the Xperia Z4 next March at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. It will also be the only flagship smartphone from Sony in 2014, signaling the end of biannual releases. The upgrades being implemented from one generation to the next, especially from Z2 to Z3, just weren’t substantial enough to warrant upgrades from Sony smartphone owners.
As for the specifications of the Z4, the source claims that the 2015 flagship will feature a 5.5-inch Quad HD display, 2.8 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 quad-core 64-bit processor, 4GB of RAM and the new Adreno 430 GPU. The internal storage has reportedly been upgraded from 16GB to 32GB and Sony will finally replace the camera sensor that has been in every Xperia since the Z1.
Along with the upgraded display, the source also says Sony will stress audio quality on the Z4 by including a dedicated amp. Despite all these upgrades, it sounds like the design of the phone will be very similar to that of the Z3.
We can only hope this information is accurate, because if Sony wants to compete in the U.S. market, it needs a smartphone that actually competes with the other Android flagships.
