Sony’s surprise announcement at the Game Developers Conference on Tuesday night wasn’t really much of a surprise, but Project Morpheus is an exciting look at the future of console gaming nonetheless. The Oculus Rift has proven to the world that virtual reality can be a viable form of entertainment, and now Sony is looking to capitalize on its competition’s success. One huge question remains: can either device be affordable for the average consumer?

The Oculus VR team has stated on multiple occasions that the Rift will sell for as cheap as it can without killing the company. We know much, much less about Project Morpheus, but according to VRFocus, Sony’s Shuhei Yoshida did imply that the headset wouldn’t be prohibitively expensive:

“One of the great things about something being consumer electronics… is that it’s affordable,” said Yoshida, in response to a question about the potential application of the technology in schools.

Other than this vague quote, Sony did not reveal any information regarding a price or release date for Project Morpheus.
