Sprint earlier today announced a new program which allows iPhone users to upgrade to the latest iPhone model for just $22 per month. The only rule for eligibility is that your current iPhone has to be a model from a previous generation.

The program, dubbed iPhone Forever, starts today and is fairly straight forward. Eligible customers simply bring in their current iPhone and can walk out with the latest model for just $22/month. In effect, the old way of doing business — waiting 2 years between upgrades — is being phased out.

Sprint adds that it’s running a special promotion through December 31 whereby users who opt to trade-in their old device can pick up a 16GB iPhone 6 model for just $15 per month. Also of note is that Sprint, in an effort to facilitate switching, will gladly pay off your contract if you happen to be stuck with a rival carrier.

“We asked ourselves, ‘What could we do that would move our customers forward with the latest and greatest technology every day?’”, Sprint CEO Marcelo Claure said in a press release. “We decided: How awesome would it be if anytime customers don’t have the latest iPhone, they are eligible to upgrade, and have it be as simple as handing us your existing iPhone and picking up a new one – all included in your monthly rate.”

Sprint has been struggling for some time now and its latest promotion is clearly an effort to keep up with similar upgrade and leasing programs available from rival carriers. Which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, of course. Heightened competition can only help end users in the long run secure the best deals.

Sprint’s press release included the following chart which compares plans across various carriers.
