RIM to benefit from Apple’s patent attacks on Samsung

Business

As Samsung’s latest devices continue to be targeted by patent complaints filed by the likes of Apple and Microsoft, Research In Motion may reap the benefits of these numerous quarrels. In a note to investors on Tuesday, Gus Papageorgiou of Scotia Capital sees Apple’s multiple complaints against Samsung as potentially opening doors for the struggling BlackBerry maker. Pointing specifically to Apple’s recent win barring the sales and marketing of several new smartphones by three European Samsung subsidiaries, Papageorgiou believes sales of RIM’s new BlackBerry 7 devices will be bolstered by the void these devices will leave in certain regions of Europe if the ban goes into effect on October 13th as scheduled. He also notes that the new BlackBerry Bold 9900 is already selling well in Europe, however, which means RIM’s potential benefits from the impending ban on Samsung smartphones could be icing on the cake. Read on for more.

“These initial victories for Apple do not bode well for Samsung especially in the European market where its market share has moved from 5.0% Q2 last year to 18.8% this year,” the analyst wrote. “In addition to these legal issues, we believe the BlackBerry Bold 9900 is already outselling the Samsung Galaxy S. Based on GSM Exchange’s website, which tracks the top 3 most actively traded devices in Europe, the Bold 9900 is now in the #2 position ahead of the Samsung Galaxy S II and behind the iPhone-4 16Gb.” Papageorgiou raised his price target on RIM stock to $46 from a previous target of $35.60, and he upped his rating to Outperform from Sector Perform.

Title should read.. “RIM praying to benefit from Apple’s futile attacks at stopping any sort of competition”

How so Apple isn’t blocking competition it’s blocking copycats……and seeking money it.

      • Anonymous

        English please?

If I decipher your argument correctly, then by your logic Apple should sue EVERY tablet and phone maker.

You have done your homework on this issue before commenting I hope. You do know exactly WHY Samsung is temporarily being blocked in Germany yes??

Apple will ultimately lose this fight.

Yes Apple is sooooo goood!!!! No one can compete. I LOVE APPLE I LOVE STEVE JOBS! APPLE IS MY WHOLE LIFE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! APPLE APPLE APPLE.

,,wow,. I just got a $829.99 iPad2 for only $103.37 and my mom got a $1499.99 HDTV for only $251.92, they are both coming with USPS tomorrow. I would be an idiot to ever pay full retail prîces at places like Walmart or Bestbuy. I sold a 37″ HDTV to my boss for $600 that I only paid $78.24 for.

If you haven’t tried this blackberry before, you should STFU. There is a reason why T-Mo and Sprint have sold out of it.

      • Anonymous

This BB?? Which blackberry is this article referring to? If you are attempting to call me out for not owning one, think again. i own both a blackberry and an android phone. troll elsewhere.

      Struggling???? BGR at it again.

      • Anonymous

Actually, RIM is struggling. this is not uncommon knowledge.

      • Anonymous

Ya record profits, really stuggling, but hey keep it up if it makes you happy. Almost as goot as sucking you know who’s, you know what.

When your only positive outlook is the fact that a competitor’s device can’t be sold due to BS litigation, what does that say about your device?

    • http://facebook.com/daniel.dlugos Daniel Dlugos

It says that you do your due diligence in securing the necessary IP to sell your device without patent infringement.

      • Anonymous

Yuk Yuk, no one that would buy and iPhone would buy this phone. Do you think it’s cheaper? The turth is Apple has not lost one sales to Samsung. The only people that buy Samsung are people who are sick to death of the cult of Apple….. and guess what? SInce Android is beating the ass off of Apple, I guess there are a lot of people who are totally sick of apple, just sayin….

I haven’t seen any evidence of RIM’s user-base falling, in fact it seems to be increasing.  Yes, they have lost market-SHARE, but they are selling more phones than ever (the consumer market just got bigger, and they didn’t expand into it very well).  Apple showed that an OS does not need a large marketshare (just 5% or so) to be viable and profitable.  I think RIM has a very positive outlook so long as they maintain a critical mass of users, even if Android and iOS continue to account for the bulk of the market.

    • Anonymous

You think that it’s the only positive outlook because the media is bias with all the anti-RIM talk.

BestBuy drop the price for the Playbook for the long weekend, suddenly it’s the touchpad’eques end of the world.  Guess what?  Nobody has reported the fact that BestBuy raised the price of the Playbook back up to $699 for the 64GB model.

You know you’re worthless at selling a phone when you have to take advantage of other phones being banned to get sales out of your own device.

I love how BGR said “the struggling BlackBerry maker”

The only country that sales are not *AS* strong is the USA.

If you go anywhere outside in England, Australia, (some parts of) Canda or Most other European countries and not see at least 100 blackberrys in people’s hands

once again a new reason to hate apple…not that I am against RIM,on the contrary APPLE is the BIG BULLY on the block, how the european courts could go along with this farce is beyond me….I am just glad apple wasn’t around for the invention of the wheel…what truly bothers me is the slew of products that others have discovered that are similiar to the IPAD etc.and apple claims they have to protect their intellectual property rights….cannot wait for the day they crash and burn ,just like the bulllies before them

  • Zachary P.

Let’s see, as I recall, Papgeorgiou set a $130 target for RIM stock just last December. Of course, anyone who followed that advice got hammered this year. The fact is, those who take the time to talk to retailers about Playbooks will quickly learn they are sitting on shelves and aren’t moving at all. RIM’s total device sales globally are now declining in absolute numbers – not just market share – and Papgeorgiou sees a sudden 50% increase in revenue next year! Huh? QNX is not going to create that surge. Why? We’ve already seen QNX – the Playbook runs it – and it clearly fails to deliver a ‘superior experience’ compared to Apple’s iOS or Google’s Android. That is not a prediction – consumers have already voted!  Ipads are outselling Playbooks 20 to 1. Game over.

    • Anonymous

No. Rim’s total device sales is NOT declining in absolute numbers!

      • Zachary P.

Well, yes they have!  Here are the facts from RIM:
FY 2011 Q4 device sales: 14.9 million BBs.  Source: RIM press release, March 24, 2011.
        FY 2012 Q1 device sales: 13.2  BBs + 500K Playbooks.  Source: RIM press release, June 16, 2011.

13.7 million is smaller than 14.9 million.  RIM devices sales went DOWN last quarter.

Well find out on September 15 how much further they have declined in Q2…

      • Anonymous

        Are these global numbers?

BTW, you can’t base yourself on Q to Q numbers. You have to compare it to the same Q the year before…

      • Zachary P.

        Some more info for epilogue1:

Those are global numbers, not just U.S.  And sequential quarter-to-quarter is, in fact, a great way to spot inflection points in sales trends.  You can hang onto year-over-year growth comparisons until they run out, but a Q-to-Q decline is awful news for RIM compared to their competitors.

For example, let’s look at what Apple did in their most recent consecutive quarters:
        Q2: 18.65M phones + 4.69M ipads = 23.34 million devices
        Q3: 20.34M phones + 9.25M ipads = 29.59 million devices

Quarter-to-quarter, while RIM’s global device sales DECLINED by 1.2 million (-8%), Apple’s global device sales INCREASED by 6.25 million (+27%).
You’ll notice that in the most recent quarter for each company, Apple globally outsold RIM over 2-to-1…

        Hope these facts help…

its not that QNX sucks its the hardware RIM put it on. the playboook hardware is abysmall but QNX is pretty great actually

      • Zachary P.

Either way, the growth is not going to materialize…

At this point in time nothing can help Rim, nothing.

If RIM is going make money and sell more phones then Good for them. Consumers need choices and more choices the better it is.
    1. iOS
    2. Android
    3. RIM
    4.Windows Phone
    5. Symbian(may be gone)
    6. ?
Let them fight for their survival.
