AT&T’s entire 2011 Android lineup to receive Gingerbread update

mobile

AT&T confirmed on Monday that its entire 2011 Android smartphone lineup will receive the latest Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) update in the future. AT&T will push the OS to the HTC Inspire 4G, the LG Phoenix, the Pantech Crossover, the Samsung Infuse 4G and the Samsung Captivate. Oddly, the LG Thrill 4G is missing from that list, but we suspect that it will also receive the software patch following its release. Motorola released its Gingerbread update to the ATRIX 4G over the weekend. AT&T did not announce a specific timeline in terms of when the devices would receive Android 2.3, and the company said that the upgrade process and release dates will vary by device. Read on for the full press release.

AT&T Customers to Enjoy Gingerbread

Android 2.3 Debuted in the AT&T Portfolio with HTC Status, All Post-paid Android Smartphones Released in 2011 Planned to Receive 2.3 Upgrade

DALLAS, July 25, 2011 /PRNewswire/ –

Key Facts

  • AT&T* confirmed that upgrades to the Androidâ„¢ 2.3 (Gingerbread) platform are planned for all post-paid Android smartphones already introduced this year.
  • Motorola ATRIXâ„¢ 4G users will receive an update to Android 2.3 beginning today and HTC Inspireâ„¢ 4G users will receive the update in the coming weeks.
  • Motorola ATRIX 4G update will also provide the ability to download applications from third-party stores.
  • HTC Statusâ„¢ arrived in stores July 17, the first AT&T smartphone running Android 2.3.

Upgrade Details

Customers who purchased an Android smartphone from AT&T introduced in 2011 can expect to receive an update to Android 2.3. All of these devices are planned to be upgraded from Android 2.2 to Android 2.3, also referred to as Gingerbread. In addition, Samsung Captivateâ„¢ owners will be able to upgrade to Gingerbread.

Delivery methods will vary by device. Whenever possible, upgrades are delivered over-the-air (OTA), however in some cases the size of the file needed to install the update will require the user to connect via Wi-Fi or connect the phone to a PC to install the update. Factors such as manufacturer-defined software and other device performance improvements result in each device requiring a separate update which will vary in timing.

Beginning today and continuing over the next few weeks, Motorola ATRIX 4G users will be prompted to install the update. To download the update, users must be connected via Wi-Fi. In August, HTC Inspire 4G users will be notified that the update is available and can be downloaded when connected to a Wi-Fi network. AT&T smartphone users can access at any one of the company’s more than 26,000 Wi-Fi hotspots at no cost.

The AT&T smartphones planned for a Gingerbread update are:

  • HTC Inspireâ„¢ 4G
  • LG Phoenixâ„¢
  • Motorola ATRIXâ„¢ 4G
  • Pantech Crossoverâ„¢
  • Samsung Captivateâ„¢ 4G
  • Samsung Infuseâ„¢ 4G

Android 2.3 (Gingerbread)

Gingerbread delivers a number of improvements, such as user interface refinements, refined copy/paste functionality and speed enhancements. The upgrade offers improved power management that offers a more active role in managing applications in addition to an improved on-screen keyboard with multi-touch support that makes typing faster and more accurate.

I had Gingerbread on my Atrix way before the OTA so this is old news to me.  Im happy the other guys are catching up though…GB is awesome, but im already looking forward to 2.4. =)

This is old news to me too, but that’s because, as always when it comes to android news, BGR is late to the party. I’ve seen this story all day on Engadget, Android Central, and Phandroid. Glad you guys could pull your mouths off of Steve Jobs cock long enough to post an android story.

    • sirpaul

Chill buddy, if you’ve already seen it in so many places why would you want to see it again? And by now you should have learned that BGR is an Apple, not Android, -centred blog. Getting this piece of news an hour late isn’t a big issue anyways – not like it’s breaking news or anything.

Just chill and enjoy the article, and if you like Engadget so much just read that blog and don’t complain about obvious things here. It’s like complaining on an xbox blog that PS3 news doesn’t come threw often enough.

      • Dustin Knowlton

I’m relaxed, I’ve just started to feel a lot of disdain towards BGR lately, as they seem to have shifted from a blog site that focused on all mobile tech, to a blog site that now panders to the crApple crowd. And we’re not talking about being an hour behind on this story, we’re talking, I read it at 8:31am PT on endgadget, it was posted at 9:04am PT on Phandroid, and at 9:30am PT on Android Central, yet BGR didn’t get it up until 6:50pm, almost 9 & 1/2 hours later. I know it’s not big news, but that’s pretty sad. If it would have been a story about ios 6 or something, they would have been right on it.

Phandroid, why don’t you hang out there if you want DROID news all the time? This site does all news and I regret to inform you that more people care about Apple than DROID OS and DROID phones.

      • sirpaul

I’ve noticed it too, and there is not much you can do about it. Sometimes the Apple news does get a little ridiculous, and then I just try to ignore it. I don’t often frequent Engadget because there is just too much there for me – but when I do I almost always read something in the morning, then read it on BGR hours or even days later. I keep coming back because I like the community, writers, as well as (in general) the news story choices that BGR has decided to write up.

While far from an Apple fanboy (or a fanboy of any kind really), I still love reading most Apple stories. I think for most people the hype surrounding Apple makes any story seem exciting. Doesn’t mean Apple  deserves it, but that’s just the way it is. If Apple news really bores you, this isn’t the right place to be.

And I do know exactly what you’re talking about. I’ve been on the boards for quite a while now (since the days of Galvatron, and when the Bold was BGs favourite phone), and reading the blog for even longer (2007)…I realize they have changed drastically, but so has the market, people and technology in general. I guess the only “advice” I can give you is….don’t read what you don’t like :) Simple as that.

No love for the Dell Streak owners.

    • Mac

Are there any actually Dell Streak owners? I think the devices are in warehouse dumpster.

      • Andril

Yep I own the Dell Streak – good phone bad support from AT&T

Woohoo! Android will kill crApple with this! This proves that market share is the most important factor. BTW I have a teeny weenie.

  • Generatione

Too late. Tired of android and at&t stalling on updates. Going back to iOS.

  • Cornbread

What is the captivate 4g? Is that a typo or the Galaxy 2 device for ATT?

    • sirpaul

It’s what ATT decided to call the captivate.

      • Cornbread

So is it a new Captivate or just the old one with fake 4g?

  • Kyle

    how about Dell Streak?

  • Anonymous

Seems like Android 4.0 Icecream Sandwich is the version to wait for. What’s the point of even having a 2.3 Gingerbread Handset version and 3.2 Honeycomb Tablet only version.

  • CMC

It’s all hacked/whacked/crapped on by them with significant bloatware.  Too bad they refuse to release a ‘pure’ Android device.  But I’m sure this is good for most users.  Sad though that they will never know the true power of their phones using hacked up software.
