Sprint Motorola XPRT hands-on

mobile

FedEx just buzzed by and dropped off Sprint’s latest QWERTY Android smartphones, the Motorola XPRT. The XPRT reminds us a lot of the DROID Pro on Verizon Wireless, but it feels just a bit cheaper, which likely explains the lower price tag. It lacks the polished finished of the DROID Pro and it feels much more plasticky. That said, the keyboard feels pretty stellar so far and we are already whizzing away while typing emails and other messages. The big selling point for the XPRT is that it also supports international roaming on GSM networks and it’s the first from Sprint to feature enterprise-class security — that means it should be attractive to corporate users. Under the hood, the XPRT is powered by a 1GHz processor and it runs Android 2.2 (Froyo) with MOTOBLUR painted on top. The phone’s 3.1-inch touchscreen display is large enough, but the 480 x 320 resolution definitely makes things look a bit pixelated. Other features include a 5-megapixel camera with dual-LED flash and support for Adobe Flash 10. We’ll be taking a deeper dive into the Motorola XPRT, which launched on June 5th for $129.99 with a contract, so stay tuned for our upcoming review. In the meantime, be sure to check out our gallery!

Two Android threads in a row.  BGR = on the Android dick!

This thread will get AT LEAST ten posts.  At least.

“it’s the first from Sprint to feature enterprise-class security”

Might want to add “Android device” into that line to avoid upsetting the sensitive Blackberry people.

you know the blackberry people will say how ugly the phone is, then turn around and praise the new Bold Touch that is coming out.

I wish there was a similar phone but with the AWS (T-Mo/Wind) band. There’s the Moto Charm, but the QVGA resolution is terrible. I really want to get rid of my Blackberry 9700, but I guess I’ll have to settle on a full touchscreen device (I’m not really a big fan of landscape sliders either).

I’m so sick of these Apple articles. Would you get off Steve Jobs dick already?!?!?

    • Bringit

      Exactly.  I am deleting BGR.

Ok can we actually TALK about the phone?  I bought one last week and in a word amazing!  As a Blackberry user for 5+ years this does everything I want.  I love the keypad and the touch screen.  Yes it is not the brightest or best on the market, however when teamed with the very fast processor and the 1850 Batt it’s fast.  Plus I have been getting 2+ days on a charge which is great for an Android phone.  Last but not least it is small enough to put in my pocket.  So check it out.  Good job Sprint!

Have you ever had a phone, in recent years, that wasn’t small enough to fit in your pocket? Just saying… is that really a “pro”? :P

Btw I have one too, replaced my Evo with it. I have a tablet so wanted a main phone, with Android, that last longer. I dig is so far, but the screen sure is tiny! :)

I have one as well but my battery is not acting the same way.  Mine burns out in a day after moderate usage.   I was using a task killer and I think it was destroying my battery but I am not sure.  Do you use an app killer, how do you keep the battery going so long?  Other than this battery issue I love the device.  I am big into phone and understand this thing is not flashy (not a great resolution, no dual processor, and so on).  But, with that being it gets the job done.  I have had a blackberry for the last 5 years and used to love it, but they have really fallen off as of late.

I’ve had mine for a day…. so really off its full first charge and I am sitting at 30%-40% battery, 16 hours unplugged. This may not seem like a lot, but 9 of those 16 hours was @ work where my Sprint (and all carrier signals) are awful. It constantly drains your phone because signal is in/out at work, only within a small 2 mile radius or so.

So in turn, my battery life is very good so far.

Task killers do more harm than good. They just aren’t necessary on any device running something more than 1.6!

      • mig

you don’t need app killers on this phone it has a built in task manager. and as far as BGR comment as feeling cheap!!! WTF are u serious man. this device feels solid and i held a droid pro it doesn’t look more polished. what the pro has a chrome bezel and the xprt is black, i actually prefer the black. BGR u really have to get off your high horse. this phone kicks arssssss.

I put a task killer, “BatteryXL” on mine and it tends to work a little longer.  Nothing great though.  I just feel the larger battery that comes with this smaller phone really helps a lot.  I think sometimes phones don’t find “sweet spots” and just go extreme which really is cool but does nothing for the use of the phone and the battery just can’t keep up.  I really think this phone has found that sweet spot that makes it a real joy to use.  That’s just me though.
