Is this how iOS 5 notifications will look and work?

mobile

We’re only a couple hours away from finding out, but a photo has been making the rounds depicting what some are claiming to be part of the enhanced notifications UI in iOS 5. As you can see the in the photo, Twitter mentions are displayed on a second bar below the status bar, much like how Apple displays tethering or background voice calling. The question is, if the photo is indeed real, does tapping on the status bar then bring you to a page with all of your unread notifications? Is there an Android style drop-down panel? TechCrunch, which originally published the photo, says at the very least it has been told the photo is the “right idea,” even if it is not authentic. We’ll know in under two hours and we’ll be covering WWDC 2011 live.

:O zOMG! Stop it! stop it this instant! That looks too awesome

    • Pinkert11

Looks Awesome as this is how Blackberry has done it for years. Sorry wait, nope Apple does not steal this is brand new!!

Any reason why the camera icon is darker too?

Taking a page directly out of RIM’s book, huh? Wonder how all the iPhans feel about that one.

    • Anthonyflexas

Rim is the best at notifications is about time! Apple really needs to work on notification

Looks like it could be real. I doubt they’re changing the UI very much because too many people are familiar with the “grid of icons” look. It’s like this across all iOS devices and Apple wouldn’t want to get rid of the “easy-to-use” interface they have.

Could Google sue if they use a drop-down box?

    • Biggles

I would if I was Google, considering the source.  This is exactly the kind of vague feature that would send Apple on a lawsuit spree if the situation was reversed.

Depends on whether they patented it or not. Didn’t webOS do something similar, though?

    • Booboolala2000

Probably not, due to open source

      • KCRic

Actually if they’re charging for it or saying you can’t use the code/publishing the source to the public (which is what Apple will do) then they’re not abiding by the original license and therefor could be sued.

not since RIM had that type notification first

It’s fake. The typeface used in the new notifications bar is Myriad Pro (you can tell by comparing the M to the other Ms on the screen that use Helvetica). Looks sweet, though.

All I know is, if that’s really how everything looks then I’m done with iOS. The operating system has really set the bar for reliability and have made more major achievements in pushing forward and innovating in smart phones than any other company. That being said, the OS as it stands now is just plain boring… static icons smattered across the screen with the only arrangement option being serially arranged…. it’s just boring. Give me some interaction, give me widgets, give me some visual pizzaz… give me the Apple flare which seems to have been lost over the years… Give me a better multitasking UI, give me something that’s just not dumbed down and boring. :-(  If they don’t show me something to keep iOS aesthetically pleasing then I’m moving to Android… as much as it pains me to say it, because there are some things I REALLY REALLY hate about Android… Apple has one more chance to really make some changes to iOS before they lose me as a customer.

You cant switch to android, didnt you read the fine print?!?!

    • life

      bye…

Check out the temp on the weather icon also.  Could it be the rumored widget?

    • Anonymous

      Celsius.

    • Rocker

Is this supposed to be new? Cuz it doesn’t…

    • EJM

Please tell me you’re not serious. That’s in celsius. Which equals the 73 degrees on the fareheight weather icon. There are days I cringe at the intelligence of this country. Or lack there of.

In all honesty, apple is finally looking at their notification system in 2011?

All other platforms have had this type of notification system for years.. this isn’t anything groundbreaking or a reason to get excited..

    • http://twitter.com/VEllisWade V. Ellis Wade

But that is what Apple does – takes something already on the market, hypes the crap out of it like they are the first to do it, and by making the loudest noise about a feature, they look like the innovators.

I almost wish Android did more with their own hype machine, just because it seems to work with the masses regarding iPhones.

      • http://twitter.com/andreharry Andre Harry

Apple has the best marketing people.
They even got away with saying the first video conference for a mobile device!

      • Amblynman

This is such a nonsense, crap meme that Android obsessives have been regurgitating for years.  Apple doesn’t pretend as though they’re the first to market with these features.  They hype the crap out of doing it BETTER than anyone else (their POV, not my opinion…sometimes I agree, sometimes not).  There’s a difference.  This is like the whole “Apple pretends they made the first touchscreen phone!” retardedness back from a few years ago.  No, Apple didn’t bring to market the first touch screen phone.  They just brought the best one to market at that point.

I’m so tired of the Apple vs Android stupidity anyway.  We should be grateful both companies are doing what they’re doing because you may have noticed it’s given tech geeks a golden age of smartphones that seems to have no end in sight.  Go download another useless free news reader widget from the Android marketplace and let the adults enjoy the advantages both companies give them.

What’s funny is if they do redo it, everyone will think they are God for creating something  ”groundbreaking”.

  • http://twitter.com/whitmcghee Whit McGhee

Looks fake to me. The font on the notification bar is different from the standard font used throughout iOS.

  • Jamma3

Whatever they do it will seem as if no other phones have notifications and iphone is the best.  How does this phone get away with no proper notification system all these year and website like Boy Gennie Ass praise the phone as the best in the world.  Bash RIM all you want this is so 2000 and late.
But that’s how Apple sells products, leave out a feature and and add it in the next version…we see how long before people get a brain.

The link is broken will it work when it is time?

  • xxdesmus

Already confirmed fake (as I’m sure you already know), but nice link bait.

How exactly would that be any better for multiple notifications?

  • Booboolala2000

Haha. Ios notifications are a huge Fail! Totally not elegant. Very disruptive. A joke really. And now they are trying to ripoff Android. First with wireless tethering and now this. What’s next, widgets?

    • Zac Caslin

I know who wants notifications to actually notify you. just hide them so you forget about them. Sounds great to me.

  • CmonNow

I would hope they redo their notification system.  The iPhone has the worst notification of any phone on the market, even worse than the free giveaway phones.

Kinda sad if you think about it.  The iPhone is a baby’s toy.

This was proven to be a hoax hours ago.

  • Applesucksfatties

iNerds everywhere are creaming in their iShorts….

  • 1T2dirtnap

    It’s real.

Are you kidding me… this is innovative… Windows phone is 10 times cleaner and better.  Come on Apple, your killing me!!!!
