Amazon’s $114 ad-supported Kindle is the best selling version

mobile

According to Amazon’s “Bestsellers in Electronics” list, the company’s $114 ad-subsidized “Kindle with Special Offers,” is the most popular model in the Kindle family of eReaders. The device — launched on April 13th — is just $25 cheaper than the $139 Kindle Wi-Fi version, but it comes with sponsored screen savers and advertisements on the bottom of the screen. We originally suspected that most people would splurge for the Wi-Fi version and avoid ads, but perhaps users aren’t as turned off to them as we thought. All of this only matters, of course, if the Bestsellers list is to be believed.

No surprise here, this is America: land of the sheep and home of the paid. Bought and paid for, that is. Half of the idiots in this country would let you tattoo a Samsung logo on their babies’ asses at birth if you promised them a 52″ LCD HDTV and passes to every NASCAR event for a year. No offense to any intelligent NASCAR fans here, just seems to be the ‘sport’ with the most ignorant unintelligent fanbase.

Me personally thinks people buying from amazon at sane prices are a lot better than the actual sheep buying from iTunes.

Which is the result of your irrational hatred of Apple, thus making it something to be ignored. Cheers.

Hatred! Yeah rite, talking economic sense is anti-apple for these sheep fanboys. How is it irrational to call spade a spade, now we know whose to ignore.

wifi>ad-supported. is seeing an advertisement every time you look at your kindle worth the $25? if you have 140 or even 120 to blow im sure 25 more dosent make much. stupid

The fact that it is the best selling version proves wifi is not greater than ad-supported. The ad-supported version has wifi anyway, so how does that even matter?

there probably bought and given as gifts, or budgeted students are buying them, 25 bucks goes a long way to them.

I am surprised.  When this device almost everyone here, me included, said “I would never buy one of those.  I hate ads.” .

Well, Amazon is a customer focussed company and have proved us all wrong.

Well done Amazon.  I’m still not buying one though.  I shall stick with my original Kindle.

Wow I find this pretty surprising. Bought a new one for my wife the other day (her original one finally bit the dust) and no way was I going for the ad supported one. $50 cheaper and maybe we could talk, but $25 to be deluged with ads for next 2 years (my assumed lifespan of a device like this), no thanks.

I doubt people realize what they’re getting, I don’t know if everyone’s clear that they’ll be seeing ads on their e-reader. That’s my guess of why it’s selling so well.

Why not head over to the Kindle forums before posting ignorantly. The ads are targeted to things people are wanting; ie $20 Amazon gift card for $10. Half of a lighted cover.

Oh, and no more ‘dead authors.’ It seems people would rather see an ad for something they might want rather than the picture of an author whose books they aren’t even reading.

I bought one for my mom, and it is far from intrusive. It is a screen saver, and sure it is at the bottom of the menu page, but it isn’t present in the reading material. Plus, she just bought a 20 dollar gift card for 10 bucks and got 20 bucks worth of books.

Is there anyway to get these offers if you don’t have the Kindle with ads?  I love my Kindle, but I have the 3g version and want $20 worth of books for $10 too!

      • Jbach67

Nope. You have to have the special offers version. As per the Kindle forum I lurk at. I haven’t bought an ereader yet. I want an iPad, but its too much money right now. $114? Maybe.

  • Dale

As nice as the Kindles,Nooks, and other e-readers are, one can buy real books cheaper and avoid having unwanted authors “forced” on them.

    • Anonymous

Digital editions are always cheaper. Are you insane?

  • Anonymous

I’d be surprised if this is true. Then again, people love the perception of saving money. I’d buy the wifi or 3g version instead…if I was interested in the Kindle at all. Right now I prefer the way Nook is working out for my Android phone and on my iPad.

I loved my wifi Kindle so much that I returned it for the 3G version which I admittedly don’t really need. I originally though I was going to do all my reading with my iPad at the time but since I already stare at computer screens most of the day I figure it would be nice to relax my eyes a bit when I do some reading. don’t really need. Shiiiiiiiiit… If we can deal with all the ads in blogs like these here, I’m sure a screensaver/menu ad (not during reading) ain’t nothing but a chicken wing.
