Twitter acquires TweetDeck for $50 million

According to source speaking to TechCrunch, Twitter purchased the popular third-party client TweetDeck for between $40 and $50 million on Monday. The Wall Street Journal originally reported that Twitter was in “advanced talks” to purchase TweetDeck – a 15 person company – back in April. Sources speaking to TechCrunch said that Twitter made the purchase in an effort to stop Uber Media, another third party company with a handful of Twitter applications across multiple platforms, from buying TweetDeck first. Neither company has officially announced the acquisition, yet.

Here’s to hoping they don’t kill it off… I use TD as both a Twitter & FB client. It’s so much better than the default for both that I would be severely upset if I had to switch clients to something that’s markedly inferior.

While it would suck if they did this, I’d just mosey on over to Seesmic.

      Agreed.

Unfortunately it’s likely they’ll kill it off, thereby driving traffic towards their own applications and, most likely, then owning the majority of the market. Good for Twitter, bad for consumers + developers.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! Twitter is going to kill it and make the file size double the size…….

They will kill it or change it for sure. Twitter wants to keep the consumer from being confused by having Twitter feeds mixed with Facebook feeds.

They’re going to kill it in the sense no more FB feeds. They’ll most likely incorporate a lot of the features TD offers into the Twitter client. But you will not see FB feeds that’s forsure.

Everyone is worried about their Twitter and Facebook integration, but don’t forget that Tweetdeck also has Foursquart and Google Buzz too. This is a sad day for users of Tweetdeck for sure. I guess it’s time to start asking SocialScope how close they are with their Android client.

Call me cynical but I fear that at best they will strip out features such as Foursquare and Facebook integration and at worst they will kill off the product.

Twitter has been fighting against 3rd party clients for some time, the more innovative the client the more Twitter hates it.
