HTC DROID Incredible 2 hands-on

mobile

We have been playing with HTC’s DROID Incredible 2 for the last day or so, and here’s some quick feedback and first impressions: For starters, the 4-inch screen size, while no doubt a personal preference, really seems to be the sweet spot for most Android handsets. It’s reasonably large, yet not too big to use one-handed, as some 4.3-inch devices seem to be. The screen itself is beautiful, but there is an unusually high glare on the display that can be a bit distracting. Beneath the display lies a 1GHz Snapdragon processor, an 8-megapixel camera with support for 720p HD video capture and the Android 2.2 (Froyo) operating system. We’re really enjoying the styling and build materials of the Incredible 2; it’s a welcome update to original DROID Incredible, which was a bit plasticky. One issue with the build of the handset, however, is that front case and rear battery cover have been sandwiched together, and the seam is right in the middle around the entire outer edge of the phone. This impacts the feel of the phone when it is being held, and we’re not big fans. That’s probably the only negative thing we can find off the bat — and it’s not even a major issue, just a minor annoyance. All in all, the HTC DROID Incredible 2 seems to be a worthy upgrade over the original, but we’ll reserve final judgement for our upcoming review. In the meantime, hit the gallery below for some preliminary photos, alright?

Had the first Droid Inc. it was nice, I enjoyed it while it lasted. However the one problem i had was the camera was awful… 8mp and all the pics unless taken outside in bright sunlight were very granny and just not very user friendly. Hope the new one is a little better, everyone should take some notes from the iPhone 4 camera and samsungs.

The camera is actually really good. I have the europian version and the camera is really clear

      • http://twitter.com/MrKow84 Kyle

cool, good to know its been upgraded…

I’m with you there Kyle. I liked it for the time I had it, and the outdoor photos were fine, but the indoor photos were terrible.

As for the Droid 2 itself: pass. Nice that it is a world phone, but wouldn’t buy any new phone right now that did not support LTE if I am on Verizon (and I am).

How is this phone compared to the Thunderbolt? Mostly size wise…

    • http://twitter.com/buddhaville buddhaville

      would say it’s .3 inches smaller! :)

    • Anonymous

Night and day difference. The Thunderbolt is thicker, heavier, unwieldy to use with one hand (esp. if your hands are small). The DInc 2 is, IMHO, the perfect size phone and very light, but still feels solid in your hand. I disagree with BGR on the battery cover seam issue–might just be an issue with their unit (pre-production?) as I can’t even feel it on mine.

This is a great DROID. HTC knocks another one out of the park! Apple should take note.

    • http://twitter.com/MrKow84 Kyle

without Apple you dont have HTC, you dont have front face camera, no touch screen, no app store… what has DROID done that Apple has not already done ?

      • Anonymous

Do you…do you think Apple invented the touch screen and the ability to purchase apps?

When you pray does it start with “Dear Steve Jobs”?

      • http://twitter.com/MrKow84 Kyle

        sometimes…

      • John

First off, Apple didn’t invent any of those things. Droid does high res screens and dual cores before apple. Droid does 4G before apple. Droid does multi-tasking before apple. Droid does a lot before apple.

      • Anonymous

So true. Kyle is way off in what he knows. He should be using the internet to read more and talk less. Google (not apple owned) is a great way to look something up. :-) HTC pretty much did all of that stuff way before Apple.

      • http://twitter.com/_elemenopee_ Kavin Nguyen

Droid does your mom too. :D

      • Diengts

How come apple is spanking htc all over the universe??

      • http://www.theworldgrowsold.com Mundus Senescit

front-facing cameras and touch screens didn’t come from Apple…And while they were the first to have a large mobile application system in play it wasn’t ground-breaking. If Apple never moved to phones, we would likely have much of what we have right now imo.

      • http://twitter.com/MrKow84 Kyle

yes.. yes… and yes it was ground breaking all there add campaigns said so…

HTC has been making touch screen phones well before Apple – for about 13 years. In fact they had front facing cameras before Apple. They launched a gesture based phone before Apple – HTC Touch. While I agree that Apple is good for the industry and pushed the other vendors to do more which now they are killing Apple in features, functionality, technology, etc, I think you just dont know much about the industry based on the comments above since they are all innacurate. Its not a slam on you. Apple is less of a technology company and more of a marketing company and they have done a fantastic job convincing Joe Consumer that they are first to do everthying which is far from true. Think about all the shortfalls. They launched the iphone without cut and paste which every other phone had in it 5 years prior. They launch video conferencing but you have to be on wifi while thier competitors are using the cellular netowrk and wifi. They own itunes but you could not use a song as a ring tone when all manufacturers had been doing that for 10 – 15 years prior. In reality, your comment should be Android vendors like HTC lead in technology and capailities and apple is a fast follower in some cases.

Didn’t the HTC evo come out with a ffc before apple?
Looking at multiple comments I can’t tell if you are being sarcastic. If so, touche sir.

I don’t think apple was first with the hardware. They *were* first with video calling software that ACTUALLY WORKS GOOD and has literally zero setup, though it’s limited to WiFi. I still haven’t seen any other video calling app that comes close to as usable, nor any that doesn’t require setting up Yet Another Account.

      • Anonymous

Are you insane? The EVO had a front camera before the iPhone 4 launched.

      • Anonymous

HTC was making tourch sreen phones BEFORE apple

HTC had front facing camera BEFORE apple

there are countless of other things that Apple had done after HTC (i.e multitasking and not to mention the rumored 4″ display of the Iphone 5)

    • http://twitter.com/_elemenopee_ Kavin Nguyen

Negro please. I have an iPhone 4 and a G2x. Android does somethings that are better than the iPhone, and the iPhone does do certain things better than Android. Jailbroken iPhone could do a lot that Android could. So your fanboyism gibberish is all lame Norman. You sound a lot like a West Borough Church moron.

Why is it people feel the need to consistently troll on here????

      • http://twitter.com/MrKow84 Kyle

because they live in there parents basement and have nothing better to do…

Dear Steve Job’s ilove you… that is all…

      • badfishie

You dont use propper grammer. Its “their’ parents, not ‘there’ parents.

    • Anonymous

Norm, you troll this site 24 hours a day making stupid comments. Do you work at all?

  • Thunderbolt715

Big Fail. No LTE – Where’s the RED guts ? Still froyo ! Please. I’ll take the thunderbolt over this tyvm. Anyone who buys this phone is buying yesterday’s technology.

    • Anonymous

“Anyone who buys this phone is buying yesterday’s technology.”

Says the guy with the single core device running Froyo.

    • http://twitter.com/vermaaman Aman Verma

This phone is mainly meant for a lot of Verizon customers who like the ability to travel internationally.
Hence, this phone is a good improvement from the original (wonderful) incredible, with Global capabilities and front-facing camera but still on 3G; as for phones with actual 4G the battery is still a huge concern. As far as the froyo goes, with time this phone will have the upgrade as well.

Patience is a Virtue that not many Cherish :)

  • Scott

It’s hardly a significant upgrade from the 1st incredible. I wonder if 3G & WiFi reception are any better, cause the 1st one sucked at that.

  • http://twitter.com/MrKow84 Kyle

all very good points. thank you. why is it so hard to have a normal conversion about phones ? I like my girls Tbolt but I like my Apple a bit more… I just dont understand why so many ppl hate on Apple so much ? its just a damn phone, you don’t have to get all crazy lol…

I own a iPod, more accurately my wife and i own iPods. Anyway. iOS isn’t a horrible platform. i just do not like Apple as a whole. I do not agree with their business practices. and we bought both of ours new from Craigslist, so i didn’t have to donate any money to JobCorp.

    qHD display?

  • Charliekuney

I feel as though this phone, the Motorola Droid X2 (or whatever), and the HTC Thunderbolt are way too similar, especially all being from the same carrier.

  • Anonymous

Shame this doesn’t have LTE, I would buy this over the Thunderbolt in a heartbeat.

  • Bullet Tooth Tony

I guess it’s a bad day to ask if it does eHRPD and, thus, simultaneous voice/data on 3G as a result…

  • Someone

Will Verizon give unlock codes for this phone if I called their Global customer service? I want to be able to use my Orange UK SIM card when I travel.

  • Anonymous

boring, looks the same as the previous one….

  • Dfk

I just use my computer for the internet. I really don’t need all that speed from the LTE network. What am I going to do with it? Download songs? Read important documents? Do it at home or office. Forget bashing Apple and Google with the never-ending debate. Pick your phone, like your phone, and use your phone. In the end, aren’t we all asses for falling into consumerism … cuz, next week, there’s going to be another phone and this one is going to be outdated. We buy it next week, we’ll we’re idiots for not waiting another week. They’re just phones, no one with common sense really cares or debates about stuff like this.

  • http://twitter.com/davidchavez05 David

LOL this is the incredible 2?? Bwahaha!
no dual core… not a top dog. period.
    Incredible? i dont think so.

Stop saying “alright?” at the end of your posts. You’re telling me a story. We are not having a conversation.

  • Rjisnumber1

Does the run on GSM now? It says on Verizon’s website GSM and CDMA

    • Anonymous

The GSM capability is strictly for international usage, not within the US.
