MacBook Pros to don composit cases, suggests rumor

Rumor

An Apple hire from earlier this month ignited rumors that a composite, fruit-branded smartphone may be in the works. Kevin Kenney, the employee in question, assumed the position of “Senior Composites Engineer” at Apple after a 14-year stint making carbon fiber bicycles. The origin of this latest, notebook related rumor seems to be a blend of Mr. Kenney’s hiring, sprinkled with a dash of information published by iLounge earlier this year — stating that a “milestone” update to the MacBook Pro laptop family was due in 2012. The most recent Apple fodder has the company revamping its MacBook Pro line with a black, composite casing and improved specs. Not a lot of firm ground to stand on with this one, but worth mentioning nonetheless.

A carbon fiber composite case and black? O_o

Sounds like a ThinkPad to me.

Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery… and it looks like Apple loves dishing out the ‘flattery’.

      or a Sony Z.

Does Apple come up with anything on their own?!?

They can’t even build anything on their own, F’conn does it for them in China.

      • Anonymous

You know what Foxconn is, right? It’s just a bunch of cheap chinese hands screwing together the components they get delivered to the factory. Foxconn doesn’t design or produce anything, they just assemble parts for about every laptop manufacturer on earth (or at least the ones that don’t go to Hon-Hai or one of the other electronics assembly factories).

Why am I even replying to your troll post…

Hate as much as you want. Every company out there struggles to be half of what Apple has become. Stock has risen from $70 a share to $350 a share in 3 years.

“With quarterly revenue growth of 83 percent and profit growth of 95 percent, we’re firing on all cylinders,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “We will continue to innovate on all fronts throughout the remainder of the year.”

      Since 1977 or so? Nope.

I don’t remember seeing any other aluminum unibody laptops out there…

      • Cash

Toshiba had one for awhile. It weighed a ton and was a grand more than comparable models, so needless to say it didn’t last long. Looked pretty sexy though.

      • Wow.

        Doesn’t HP have the Envy?

Those using Thinkpads T410s’s have been enjoying carbon fiber for quite some time now.

    • Anonymous

Aren’t the Thinkpads made from plastic reinforced with carbon fiber, like all the other laptops that have carbon fiber in them (there are quite a few)?

Not saying Apple will do so, but if they make a laptop case that is actually ‘made from carbon fiber’ instead of ‘reinforced with carbon fiber’, I think that would be a first in consumer laptops (most likely some of the rugged/military laptop cases are from carbon fiber already).

That would be a Mac I would really struggle to abstain from owning

  • Cash

Wrong. If any Apple computer goes the composite route, it’s going to be the base Macbook. This would be a huge step up in quality from the current plastic, which is easily damaged and discolored after normal use.

Going from unibody aluminum to composite, on the other hand, would be a huge step backwards in quality, and makes no sense as the current design is wildly popular, functional, and indeed iconic.

Who comes up with these moronic “rumors” anyway? Did you guys just get tired of constantly posting about the new white iPhone 4, or what? Grasping at straws is still grasping at straws folks.

    • Shanghai Dan

WAIT – there’s going to be a white iPhone 4? If only there was a site that provided that kind of information…

It was worth mentioning? Really? This site is turning in to MacRumors.

If this is real then probably a move towards being ‘greener’ with their materials.
