New images of Motorola’s DROID 3 surface

mobile

New images of Motorola’s DROID 3 smartphone have surfaced online, courtesy of Howard Forums. The device —which will be heading to Verizon Wireless — is seen exposing its QWERTY keyboard, complete with dedicated number keys. Since the numerals are no longer piggybacking on lettered keys, Motorola was able to provide easier access to more non-alphanumeric characters — the presence of the Euro (€), Pound (£), and Yen (Â¥) symbols are most notable. We also can see and HDMI-out port flanking the micro USB port on the device’s side. Hit the jump to see one additional image.

    Common, where is the Bionic!!

    • http://thesistown.com/writing/basics/doctoral-thesis doctoral thesis

      forget about it))))

      Patience!

They have to tweak it to work with MotoBlur, lol!

      • Droid_Dizzy

The BIONIC will have a toned down more advanced motoblur some what like the D2/R2D2/D2G & DX had but the next version (buisness/adult version IMO) of it. The real motoblur (cramped together, social loving, teen version IMO) is on the Atrix, Cliq, Cliq XT, Cliq 2 & Citris.

The locked bootloader on my Atrix makes me cry. I’m pretty sure the locked bootloader on this phone will make you cry too.

    • Anonymous

Agreed…after owning a d2 and “thoroughly enjoying” the locked bootloader, I’ve decided not give Motorola any more of my money until they unlock their bootloaders…I love their hardware but I need to be able to have full access to my phone :)

      • Anonymous

Cosigned. This is why HTC is going to be getting my money from here on out. Motorola is determined to stick with BLUR and a locked bootloader. HTC is superior in both ways, plus their cameras seem to be better (the D2′s camera is allergic to color, apparently).

    • Vanilla Ice

I just read a tweet from a vzw worker that does phone testing and from the looks of it, this droid will be “Vanilla”.

      • Anonymous

Initiate orgasm now….this would be epic…but I’m sure they’ll put blur on it by the time it releases :(

the problem i have with your statement about using android because we want to have more freedom is that it is just a silly illusion, now. perhaps only insofar as we consider more robustly customizable home apps & replaceable text/ime/what have you to be freedom. google has been peeling away freedom from SDK dev perspective, locking useful things down to system level only. I experienced it first hand as a dev who provided options to cancel or replace the lockscreen, switch lock security on or off under certain conditions, and enable a custom incoming call prompt letting users react to calls from long press buttons or hardware buttons. all of this has been taken away. through version 2.1, 2.2, 2.3. We had quite a smooth means of lockscreen replacement before the method was broken in 2.1. Now it is impossible to run a custom lockscreen that can unlock without very clunky lag and jagged UI transitions.

at this point in time to get to the point of this freedom we seek, its no better than on iOS where jailbreaking is the way to go… i think android is out of control with crappy OEM modifications and too few stock config devices launching. the ideal of android is slipping as iOS gains ground in core capabilities and is generally just a more enjoyable & solid platform.

Sorry… I refuse to believe that. They’ve got a new and improved version of MotoBLUR. It’s on the Atrix. It’ll almost certainly be on the Droid Bionic, and they’re trying to figure out how to put it on the Xoom.

So I’m supposed to believe that they’re going to release The D3 with pure Gingerbread (or Ice Cream or whatever’s out when this phone drops)? There’s no reason to believe that. I’ll believe it when the phone has actually been released and it has unmolested Android.

      • http://twitter.com/raitchison Robert Aitchison

Both previous droids have been stock Android, I actually would be surprised if this one was infested with Blur.

      • Vanilla Ice

Looks like Motorola is releasing 4 droids this year. DX2, Tegra, Bionic and Droid 3. Who’s to say ALL of them will have new MotoBlur? I really think one of them will be pure Vanilla. I really hope its on the Tegra because i dont care for keyboards. But from BMX tweet (some here knows who im talking about) he did a poem reading one of the droids will be “Vanilla”. He was also hinting to hold off on the overpriced Thunderbolt and wait for a Tegra in the coming weeks!) We all know the Bionic will have blur and the DX 2 will also have it. So the Tegra and D3 have a good chance of having the freedom of pure Android.

Ugh… I hate having to reply to myself to keep the conversation going.

That’s like saying that HTC will release a phone without Sense because there are so many other phones that have it. These companies are using their Android overlays as a way to differentiate their products, since they don’t think that relying on hardware is enough. I certainly hope for a vanilla Android experience, but I don’t see what Motorola’s desire to make that happen would be. Your average consumer (i.e., people who don’t comment on tech blogs) probably likes Blur. It simplifies the Android experience and provides some widgets that you would otherwise have to go and download for yourself.

Like I said: I’d love to see more vanilla Android in the wild. I’d also like to see Moto stop locking the bootloaders so it’s easier for people to install custom ROMs. They clearly don’t see any benefit in that, though, which is why I’m leaving them and going to HTC.

        HTC’s cameras seem better, anyway.

      • Esquire0399

        @Robert Aitchison:

The OG Droid was, in fact, Vanilla, but the Droid 2 actually did have Blur, though a toned down version of it.

This changes everything again! I’m so glad to see the first android device and original iPhone killer still getting sequels. DROID DOES!!!!

    • Andrew Allen

the droid wasn’t the first android phone..

      • Anonymous

Well I’m sure there were prototypes and beta tests. I’m sure they were even sold to people, but this was the first android device that was released to normal people on a real carrier.

      • guesto

        T-Mobile G1 in 2008?

      • Tim242

It was the first one that mattered. Android was nothing before it came along.

      • Anonymous

You are correct. I think in Europe they had the Hero, but that wasn’t even close to being as great as DROID was.

      • Anonymous

Agreed 100% the marketing campaign behind the original Droid is the reason android is where it is today…vz/moto nailed it with that phone it was a game changer….

      • SSS

Actually the G1 was. Geez android people are so retarded and fragmented just like there phones. Maybe next year they’ll play catch up to apple again

      • Tim242

First of all, we all know that G1 came first…but it was not a hit.Android
was nothing before the Droid. Playing catch up to apple? I am not even going
to waste my time listing out everything Android had first. You know what
they are. Apple is always behind. And you call us retarded. *rolls eyes*

      • Anonymous

Sss…why the hostility…we are all gadget geeks at heart, us (android users) just enjoy having the freedom to do what we want to our phones…this is how i look at it
Apple fanboys are the kids who did what the teachers said in high school, android users are the kids who had the hot substitute in the teachers lounge “earning extra credit”
Call us what you want…but we (and android) arent going anywhere…
        End of rant…. :)

      • Anonymous

        @SSS
The Motorola DROID, even with it’s Motoblur, was the first powerhouse Android smartphone that actually ‘DID’ and, for it’s time, DID what the iPhone 3G/GS still can not; iTunes not needed and freedom to root.

G1 was popular and great for those teens upgrading from their Sidekicks ’07′s. UX’s, LX’s, etc, and on a network, although better than CinguCrap’s AT&T¡ts, not as powerful as Verizon and, therefore, it did not count. Try and sell a used G1 on Craigslist; it’s “good for parts” these days.

So, go back to your same ol’ iTunes, your same ol’ “this song can not be played on this iphone”, your same ol’ having to change and edit your file signatures so that your media is not rejected by your iTunes [again], your same ol’ perfectly placed “Home” button because a ‘Genius’ prefers it on the front and centered on the buttom so that you can single-task your way through every application the same ol’ way. Or, just go back to letting everyone tell you exactly the way they want you to do it; the way someone here has already pointed out [dangle preposition].

      • timsuckscock

No it wasn’t if the G1 failed there would be no droid. That like saying my dad didn’t matter because I’m better than him.

      • blazdog

Not the first android bu the first that gained alot of attention

    • androidsucksdick

Atleast with IOS your phone isn’t out of date 2 months later and even a phone like the 3GS still has the newest IOS even though it’s almost 2 years old. 18 different versions of android on 50 different phones with 50 different specs. No wonder the android market is such a joke. The graphics and gaming are complete garbage compared to what IOS offers, and personally I dont feel like dropping 500 dollars every 3 months to stay up to date with android. Apple started it all and android is still trying to catch up. Atleast with my iphone I have 16 gbs of memory that I can save apps and everything to so while your RAM is bogged down by all of your apps you have running in the background i’ll have fantastic battery life on days on end!

  • T_bock

    Garbage. Get an Atrix.

    • Don’t be a tool

      Wrong network, moron.

Not sure why people still want a clunky hardware keyboard. Swype has spoiled me, and is probably the main reason i’ll never switch to an iPhone, unless of course they allow 3rd party keyboards (Yeah Right).

But I guess if there’s a market for the Hardware, then you might as well manufacture it. That’s why Android just took over as the #1 OS for smartphone sales.

    • guesto

Full screen real estate always visible and fast thumbs?!?!

      • Anonymous

Good point on the full screen aspect, but I really doubt you could out speed me with thumbs. There’s a reason the texting world record was set using swype. Once you’ve gotten accustomed to it, it’s amazingly fast and accurate. Swype is how touchscreen keyboards should work IMO. It’s such a natural way to function.

      • http://twitter.com/derrickisonline Derrick -Lex-

I hated Swype. What ever happened to BLIND TYPE???? Google bought them and we never got the keyboard.

      • Anonymous

Seems they baked the algorithm into the GB keyboard. GB on my OG Droid has, bar none, the best predictive text I’ve ever seen. Swype is pretty nice, too. I can do over 30 wpm with Swype, which is good enough to take notes and such for me.

    • Anonymous

I too have been spoiled by swype, but I think a phone like this is good for the people transitioning from blackberry who still “think” they need a hardware keyboard…

      • b howell

dont be a jerk off, i havent had a physcial keyboard in three years since i traded in my treo for an iphone. … but i guess ios autocorrect leaves a lot to be desired.

    • Anonymous

Android just took over as the #1 OS for smartphone sales because it’s on over 70 phones thats all. And I don’t see why people still want a half baked buggy laggy unsupported fragmented os like android on there phone.

      • http://www.searingarrow.com AlienSix

Stop being a blind apple fanboy

  • http://twitter.com/brianMedeiros Brian M

i like my milestone (DROID in Canada) and even though im a huge fan of swype, its always nice to have physical keys for the odd time when you want full screen, or playing games that let you use them.

My only concern is my experience with Motorola. i don’t mind not being able install my own version of android IF the manufacturer keeps my phone up to date. it is currently half way threw march and my milestone still is only running 2.1 (my brother got the backflip and that thing will never get past 1.5 in Canada. thanks Moto).

Its one thing to be a month behind, but Motorola has been terrible with the update cycle, at least out side the USA. Its like buying a laptop only to find that i cant get my updates for Windows because HP or Dell has not approved them for my laptop.

I want the droid 3 (or what ever its called internationally) but im no longer willing to pay Motorola again for the same experience I’m having now with them.

    • Palfrei

I have the same problem. The Milestones are the black ship of the Droid family.

There was an update to 2.2 scheduled for the first quarter of this year; if Motorola doesn’t comply, I’m rooting my phone.

I need to install apps on the SD card. Newer programs are way too big to fit in minuscule default storage capacity.

  • Anonymous

Nice phone but, when is Motorola gonna stop selling their souls to Verizon. Can’t they see that Verizon is now trying to court Apple instead? Allow At&t to get this or at least make it available unlocked. And keep the OS up to date or keep it Vanilla.

  • http://infotainmentempire.blogspot.com Rob

Hurry up and get here before Verizon goes to tiered pricing!

  • Anonymous

    Motorola,

Please help me understand this mindset for your keyboard design:

Moron #1: “Hey, people are complaining about how cramped our Droid’s keyboard is. What should we do?”

    Moron #2: “ADD MORE KEYS!!1!”

    -_-

    Hey geniuses, here’s some advice…

    1. Look at an HTC QWERTY keyboard.
    2. Copy it
    3. ???
    4. Profit

  • http://twitter.com/raitchison Robert Aitchison

Love the 5 row keyboard, also love the HDMI port, if it’s got stock Android and an unlocked bootloader I will have my mom pick one up to replace her OG Droid.

  • http://twitter.com/UrbanEnigma Yves

People say Blackberries look the same but majority of Android handsets lately have all looked pretty much the same to me

  • Anonymous

    LTE enabled?

    • Anonymous

i want to know this as well. unless it has 4G, i have to settle without a keyboard or wait longer for one :(

  • willbuss

    Where is the Bionic

  • anDROIDOSfan

Very distinctive look! This one will really stand out!

    • Macdoc

Yes like Corn in you Shit

  • wirecup

CON: Looks like the same old Moto keyboard trick of using alpha keys that are too small for ease of use. PRO-1: Finally, the numeric keys are primary keys and double strokes are not required to input numbers.
PRO-2: The numeric keys are larger than the alpha keys, BUT, the alpha keys shoould be larger sized and spaced further apart (hint–look at the HP business calculators)

  • Osanilevich

there better be some spec upgrades otherwise its a waste of materials to build

  • Vikkisue

    Keyboard are you kidding me?!!!!

    • http://www.cognation.net deancollins

i love physical keyboards and wont be replacing mine until a 4.3 with keyboard is released.

  • JoeD

Oh Boy. I sure hope that remarkably membrane-switch-looking keypad performs better than the other two pieces of junk Motorola saddled the Droid 1 & 2 with. Can I look forward to sub-par camera performance right out of the box on this one too? MotoBlur and Locked Bootloaders too, please – because it’s not like people have been bitching about that forever….. right?
Seriously, Motorola – I’ve been waiting for you to give me a real “Wow” moment here, still feeling like I should consider an HTC for my next smart phone.
