User guide for Motorola XOOM leaked

Tablets

Admit it, you can’t wait to get your hands on the world’s first Android 3.0 tablet, the Motorola XOOM. The problem is, we still don’t have a concrete release date. If you’re looking for a little additional information to whet your appetite until that date does come, look no further. The gang over at Droid-Life have acquired a leaked copy of the XOOM’s user guide. There aren’t any shocking revelations in the guide, but, as DL points out, there is no mention of a required data plan to get Wi-Fi working – definitely a welcome omission. Go ahead, have yourself a download and let us know what you think.

No, I think that’s apple’s bag. You know, locking you into a situation where 70+ percent of apps cost something. I think it’s HILARIOUS that apple has produced overpriced product for years, and the second that a device that actually outdoes one of theirs in every way is just a tad bit more expensive than apple’s most expensive equal product everyone is acting like OMG! ON NOES! It’s sooooo expensivessssss!

      Whatev.

        Interesting POV.

  • Ricky

Hmmm, I thought this post was from yesterday until I remembered I already read it and downloaded through engadget.

  • Nogaman1964

Best Buy ad for Sunday Feb. 20th has the Xoom for $799.99, available on the 24th!

  • bigbudha

    overpriced junk!

Awww, don’t be jealous. I understand that the Xoom actually has an O/S designed specifically for a tablet, while the ipad is basically a big iphone. I also understand that the specs on the Xoom outdo the ipad. I also get that the Xoom has 4G capabilities, and that the tablet will probably be subsidized somewhat by Verizon. So considering that the most expensive ipad is $700 and some with missing features, and no 4G, I understand how jealous you are.

      Goodluck!

      • Anonymous

He is jealous. DROID is so open and free. I love the app stealing ability and widgets that some times work. I may never get updates with this stuff but I know I can sell my DROID devices for about half what I paid and get some money to by the newest latest and greatest every two weeks. iFans are so funny. They will get higher resell for their iCrap. I don’t understand it.

      • Bigbudha

Yeah, $800 for something that only works half the time. No thank you or should I say ” force close”

      • Anonymous

Android. If your going to praise the the OS might as well get it right buddy, it’s like an apple fan calling the iPod touch an itouch.. Wow

      • Anonymous

“but I know I can sell my DROID devices for about half what I paid”

One side of that argument is that Apple products hold their value better…and the other side of that argument is that there is a sucker born every minute.

      • Anonymous

@Bigbudha Really? Half the time? First off, have you personally used The Xoom/3.0 or any Android device? epically ones that run vanilla Android? Most times I’ve seen anyone with problems it’s normally caused but a cheesy launcher Sammy or some other 3rd Party has stuck on.I’m not here to say Android is perfect, but it does WORK. And not just “Half the time”. Are you really so convoluted to think some thing so popular would only have a 50% reliability rate? (In reference to Android not Xoom since I have not used it) It’s rhetoric, pure and simple rhetoric passed down on to you without any real experienced. I agree that 800 is out of my price range but this isn’t something that my life NEEDS. It’s called a luxury! There will be a Wi-Fi version. It will be cheaper. I will be getting that.

@Omnifire: A “plain vanilla” Android device? Let’s count them: The G1, the Nexus One and the Nexus S. End list. Even the G2 has interface elements which are exclusive to that device. I own a Nexus One, and know that the plain Android OS is pretty good, but since Google allows both manufacturer and carrier to adulterate their work (have you SEEN all the crapware on AT&T and Verizon Android devices, stuff that can’t be deleted?), most Android owners don’t have a clue what “plain vanilla” is.

This is the place where some idiot chirps up that rooting the phone solves the problem, but it shouldn’t be necessary for anyone to have to lobotomize their phone and reload an OS just to get a reliable, workable solution. It is in this area that the iPhone and iPad do so well, because the results are predictable from device to device. What many folks decry as Apple’s “closed system” and “obsession with control” provides a reliable device, free from the changes the carrier would make in order to squeeze a few more bucks out of your transaction (since AT&T gets paid by other companies to tattoo that company’s application or software on the phone you just bought). In addition, Xoom’s creator, Motorola, has one of the worst records in updating the Android phones it has sold to promised newer versions of Android OS. I would have to think long and hard about trusting Moto after being burned once already.

I love my Nexus One and like the Android OS (Froyo for me at this point) very much, but the folks who boast that Android is superior don’t seem to be able to get past their dislike of Apple in order to view things objectively. Android frequently loses it superiority once the carrier and manufacturer screw it up with code which prevents a timely update to the next iteration of the OS. The Wifi version of the Xoom better be superior in every way to the iPad 2 (and be equal in price to the presumed $499 of the entry-level iPad) or else it is doomed before it is released.

@GeoKaplan, I for one didn’t mention anything in most post about the amount of vanilla android. I’m not debating that fact. There SHOULD be more (plus you forgot the original DROID). I will have to assume the fact you even mentioned Apple was directed at someone else, cause I never compared Android to Apple in anyway. Matter of fact I even said “Android is not perfect”. My reply was simply about it’s reliability is NOT 50%. Thats totally bias rhetoric. Also, I don’t know where you got that Moto is the worse at upgrading their devices. Didn’t the recent numbers show they were second only to HTC in the frequency and speed of updates? Are you aware that Sammy S phones are JUST now getting 2.2? See I don’t have a problem with the iPhone and other iDevices. The offer what they advertise. But what I don’t like is their iron fist control. Basically, I don’t like someone else telling me whats appropriate and whats not. I don’t like someone deciding what information gets to me and what information doesn’t. To me Apple is on a short slope to censorship and I don’t believe in that. But do I say there is no merit to their product and dismiss it as garbage? NO. I buy something else, that fits my needs, and my way of thinking. And once again, I didn’t bring up Apple. I just responded to it.

      • Anonymous

Also @GeoKaplan, You do realize that the iPad that is $499 is the 16gb version right? You know the Xoom has 32gb right? Do you know how much the 32gb Wi-Fi version of the iPad costs? better yet did you realize that 3g iPad is only $70 less then the Xoom with comparable memory?

Motorola – Let’s take advantage of the stupid spec nerds and charge 800$ ROFL

  • Nospam

Great piece of gear for $500. But $800? No thanks. I’ll wait for one of the next 50 tablets coming out this year. GL Moto.

  • Tim242

Ummm yes, there is an official release date of 2/24.

  • Rosey Iames

The zoom is coming to Best Buy on the 24th of February. I’m guessing other places will sell it on that day too

  • Zippy

“Admit it, you can’t wait to get your hands on the world’s first Android 3.0 tablet”

Really?? I can’t wait? Right. I’ll toss my iPad, forget about upgrading to the iPad 2 and jump to Android because they’re oh so fabulous.

    • https://me.yahoo.com/a/J7Mg.aBrt_zUZAONR5KHn_om4dCMew--#37f81 indio7777

Too bad you don’t even know if you’d want to switch because you’re so busy staying locked into a walled garden.

      • Anonymous

DROID is so open and free. You can steal apps so much easier. I love it.

      • Kurt

I hope your ability to steal something isn’t the only reasoning behind your motivation to buy a product. Android is a solid OS without that feature

Bad news it does not charge via USB port. Means another proprieritary charger, and not sure if international voltages or just US 110V. May have to wait for Moto to announce European WiFi-Only model….bad news. Will cost me more…

    • CB

It will definitely work with international voltages as almost every electronic charger is a transformer that has a wide voltage input (normally 100 – 240 and 50/60), so you will be fine.

      • Anonymous

Thanks CB, I was expecting that too, but still not charging via USB is a disappointment for me, that will not prevent me to purchase this beautifull XOOM this time, but soon will prevent future purchases of electronic gadgets.
Europeam Commission recently decided to standardize USB chargers for hand-held devices for good reasons. I already have # 10 different proprieritary chargers in my home, for multiple devices. Because I’m lazy I let them connected to the power when not changing anything during the day, and they un-effectively consume power. If all that could move to industry standard USB charging, it would save tons of chargers and money and power at the end, mechanically. Hence my point that continuing with proprieritary chargers is BAD.

  • Jacob11

I mean really BGR, this was posted a few days ago by several sites. Stop being so cocky and arrogant. Post news when it’s relevant

  • sippy

I’ll take a playbook thanks – android can keep this convaluted os and moto can keep their overpriced device

  • dan. a

This just in. indio7777 is the fandroid of the year.

  • Lesliemley

i like to know if you can purchase it off motorola wibsite without having any contract from verizon, instead connect with wifi.

    • Anonymous

Just wait for the Wi-Fi only version. It’ll be cheaper anyways.

  • And_then

Could you please re-upload the pdf? The link is no longer valid.

  • francois

the reason why motorola “leaked” the manual is because they are unable to actually produce the real thing!

    LOL! francois
