Nexus One getting Android 2.3 OTA this week?

Software

Alright, we don’t want to get everyone all riled up on a Monday morning, but this next bit of speculative news is pretty exciting. Recently, a gentlemen by the name of Alvaro Fuentes Vasquez let go a pretty exciting tweet. The 160 character quip, which was written in Español, roughly translates as:

Prepare your Nexus One (Developer version) for Android OTA update 2.3 (Gingerbread) for the next few days :-D

A quick look at Mr. Vasquez’s LinkedIn profile reveals the following position:

Leadership team and usability at Open Handset Aliance (sic) | Google Andoid (sic)

Assuming that “Aliance” means Alliance, and “Andoid” means Android, this is pretty big news. The Open Handset Alliance is “a group of 78 technology and mobile companies who have come together to accelerate innovation in mobile and offer consumers a richer, less expensive, and better mobile experience,” explains the group’s homepage. “Together we have developed Android, the first complete, open, and free mobile platform.”

Will we see Android 2.3 drop in the “next few days”? Man, we hope so.

Google is moving too fast with the OS.. get one working perfect before making another and another…

If it was ever perfect, why bother making another one?

I think they can’t make them fast enough.. they need Gingerbread so they can compete with the iPad on the tablet market, since they are already more than 6 months behind.

Props on the appropriate use of (sic). Seems like everyone likes to toss it about without any regards for the rules.

Interesting info but will 2.3 be as massive of an update as say 2.2? WiFi and security update = froyo? I don’t see where all the excitement is coming from.(plus personally I think gingerbread tastes god awful)

  • ChocoTaco

Either Mr. Vasquez’s English isn’t so good or he’s full of shit. Here’s hoping for the former. C’mon, Gingerbread.

  • Bernie

    Wish I had a Nexus 1!

  • Sean76

Yea seriously. ..maybe they should get 2.2 working right before going to. 2.3! Especially that some devices haven’t even gotten to 2.2, or even worse 2.1! Their moving too fast, I may give the new Samsung Focus a look….I hate that my NEW Android phone feels old after owning it for 3 weeks…

It’s up to the manufacturer to update the phones. But put it this way if they feel the phone is out dated and no one uses it, they will not update it. G1, etc.

There’s nothing wrong with the updates. Google released the Nexus One, so they can update it as they please.

  • Not2daft

My “old” Nexus One gets this while my Vibrant waits for 2.2. Kinda funny…I love it.

  • Alawssr1

I just hope that this new version of Android stops apps from opening in the backround that you haven’t even used.

It was tweeted therefore it is true…
Seriously? This may as well have been printed in the National Enquired.

It’s a rumor and the title was printed with a question mark mentioning a speculation.

Thanks for pointing out the obvious. Cheers to punctuation police!

  • JmHuertas

Can’t wait, my Nexus is the gift that keep giving! My Vibrant, despite its beauty still remains boxed up

  • GABE

THEY HAVEN’T EVEN ANNOUNCED IT YET, WHY WOULD THEY RELEASE IT FOR NEXUS ONE

  • cnoTe

Whats a developers nexus one? Are they all not the same?

    • JmHuertas

If I remember correctly, developers and certain press members were given Nexus’ with key IMEI indicators that receive updates and news alerts separate from the general public. Same phone, just special indicators that tell Google that these are essentially pre-release versions for testing purposes

    This week will be exciting!

  • Bringit

Nexus One on VZW would be nice.

  • wild homes

Man, that was fast. I’m pretty eager to see what Gingerbread looks like.
