Net Applications: iOS has over 1% of global browsing share, Android at 0.2%

General

Net Applications has released their report on global browsing usage numbers for iOS, Android, and Linux. The numbers show that from October of 2009 to August of 2010, both Android and iOS steadily increased their browser usage share, while Linux was mostly stagnant or declining. As of August 2010, iOS held 1.13% of global browser usage, Android held 0.20%, and Linux held 0.85%. To be frank, the fact that iOS holds a larger global browser share than Linux is a bit surprising. Whats the purpose of this post, to show what. Franlkly all these little posts about every little thing that happends with apple is begining to get irritating…apple isn’t a tech company anymore its team of extortionists and so is google.

    • Kent

Lmao ummm yea ios will show more users ( iPhone 2g , 3G , 3GS umm iPhone 4 , iPad , I-touch that came in all diffrence vers. Ios is on other things then just a phone anyone with common sence would see this. I went from the iPhone 3GS to the droid x and I can say android will pass ios in time. Andriod is so open that I installed snes games on my droid without jailbreaking. You can do just about anything with android.

    • DroidSucks

Hi brainiac, how many different “phones” is droid on? dork.

      • zviera

        None.

      • zviera

Since somebody has down ranked me, I must have been wrong with my answer ” None”.
I would like to know right answer for the question
“Hi brainiac, how many different” phones” is droid on?
I don’t want to die stupid and uneducated. Help me people please.

      • Paul M

I don’t think it’s a question of the number of phones, but the time the respective platforms have been available for public consumption. I interpreted his point as just saying that Apple had a bit of a head start (almost two years) over Google, so the market share Android has gained is still pretty impressive. I don’t know why people take these things so personally…

  • Garry

Lol did I say difference o_O

  • Hockey88

iOS and OSx combined still well below 10% of the global browsing share just like their actual market share. Even if you stack all of the other OS’s against Windows, MS/Windows still rules. Windows Phone 7 will only add to MS’s dominat position.

    • Kent

News, my 1982 walkman has less than /00000000000000000001% market share.

      Get relevant.

  • Garry

Ohhh what I find really funny is I wonder how many ios users use google as there home page. It’s all politics.

  • Mj

@ Garry if this was a survey of search engines u may have had some type of point but since it’s not shut up

  • garry

Mj your right. Lol can there be a (appledroid fanboy ) just saying.

The comments around linux are unusual. While you can use linux as a desktop and therefore use a number of web browsers. Linux is used primarily as a server operating system and with Apache installed used as a web server. Including linux on the browser side does not tell us anything. In reality this areticles does not say much of anything even about Safari and the Android browsers

  • Juan Gonzalez

So in summary, Android is 0.8% behind apple.

    • Kent

      or its 400% behind iOS.

  • markymark

Don’t worry, Linux on the Desktop is “just around the corner” – same place its been for about the past 20 years…

And that is why I never put any stock into these “numbers”. The Apple fan sites say iOS is pulling away from Android, and the Android fan sites say that iOS is losing it’s lead quickly. The reality is – who cares? They’re both successful, and both have their advantages. I have to believe that BGR posts useless little stories like this just hoping to spark something between Android and Apple fans and, as a result, driving up page views. How boring.

    • Erico

      BGR = Global Browsing Share

Phandroid = Browsing Share Only In USA
      :)

every sane mind will agree that slowly and steadily Android is gaining the market and MAY surpass iOS many folds in the coming months. I am not saying that iOS is bad, its too good…but its like that only…same story closed culture versus the open.

The data is not surprising but the article source needs to find some way to better qualify that. The article, as is, is pretty shallow so gives us little insight.

Consider also that an android phone doesnt always need to access the browser for data. Many of the common things you surf for can be widgetised minimising need to keep opening the browser.

Consider that ios historically is an “open/close” app/browser type of device where you need to access apps and browser repeatedly.

Also, android can spoof other environments.

It would be good if analysts actually did more to earn their ridiculous income than release data so barren it is up for any kind of vagrant interpretation.
