Rogers launching BlackBerry Torch on September 24

General

Rogers has just announced that they will be carrying the BlackBerry Torch 9800 beginning on September 24th. The device will be available on rogers.com or in-stores for $199 with a 3-year contract. The company quips, “As we approach the launch, you can stay on top of the latest updates by signing up at www.rogers.com/torch.” We’re not sure we would want to be married to this particular (or any?) device for three years, but there you have it. There is a video of BlackBerry’s Director of Marketing, explaining why this device is so cool, after the break.

Hopefully they don’t sell you the one I returned yesterday.

Awwww yeaaa, this is what it’s all about people!

Android lovers don’t forget your pocket protector on the way out.

  • Jason

With Rogers/Bell you don’t have a choice. Unless you buy the phone outright for $500+, you’re stuck with a 3-year contract.

    • mangenius

Why not decide if you want to sign on a 12/24/36 month? Or even 30 days.. sounds like a choice to me

      • Jason

well, using the bold 9700 at rogers for example.

        it’s $99 on a 3-year contract
        $449 on a 2-year contract
        $499.99 on a 1-year contract
        $499.99 on a monthly contract.

it’ll be the same structure with the Torch.. except $199 for 3-year and over $500 for the others

      • Jason

me a rogers rep? uh no thanks.. im ready to switch to iphone.. i have a bold9000. blackberry’s releases since then have sucked.

      • lol

their pricing structure does not give people that much of a choice. thanks for coming out, Rogers Rep.

      • Jason

cell phone companies in Canada are awful… it’s pretty much 3 years or nothing.. you’re stuck with the same phone for 2 years, then can upgrade.. but when you upgrade you must sign on for another 3 years… sooo brutal!!!

I cant believe how I was once such a blackberry follower. Once I went Android I have never looked back. I roll my eyes every time I see a bb post on here, since this site is all about new and innovative technology… Its like watching a sports game recorded from 2 years ago instead of watching the superbowl live…

    • Fapp

Thanks for pointing out you are a follower, I am a leader.

I make decisions real-time, don’t forget to google sync your calendar and upload version 2.3.4.51 tomorrow to prepare for version 3.1.234.1.

      BB OS 6 STABLE.

      • AtlHarry

Any Android users out there need to Google Sync your calendars?

        Beuller? Beuller?

I see your lips moving, but all I hear is “Fapp Fapp Fapp Fapp Fapp”.

      • SDC

Well Fapp didn’t make a whole lot of sense but I understand his/her point about how the babies with Androids are constantly yelping about getting the latest OS (to fix things, to download the latest apps that are only available on the latest OS, etc.)

Fapp thinks this is nuts b/c the BB doesn’t ‘need’ updates. Basically, BB is already very stable and functions in a manner that BB owners are happy with.

I understand his/her point of view.

While I am a 2 year Android owner, I can’t wait to get out of this unreliable PoS. Android owners will never-ever get timely updates like an iPhone. They will also be begging for the next latest OS update, and very likely they won’t get it… then they will blame their carrier…even though it isn’t really the carrier’s fault. It is like a group of spoiled uneducated techno-dweebs.

      • AtlHarry

I would have to disagree with some of those points… and agree with some.

When I had a Curve, I would constantly reboot that thing because it would lock up… BBM would stop working correctly… it would slow to a crawl… etc. I would hardly call it a ‘stable’ OS. Please don’t say I got a lemon, because I didn’t. I got a BB.

To say that OS6 for BB is stable is a bit premature. With all of the ‘new to BB’ features, there is a high likelihood that this could be the most buggy OS of them all. Only time will tell.

Yes, there seem to be “android babies”. There are just as many “iPhone babies” and just as many “BB babies”. In fact, I picked on Fapp because comment #2 above was an un-instigated crack at Android users.

If you look at (solidformofcocaine)berry.com you’ll see EXACTLY the same group of users hungry for the “latest” OS or cooked ROMS with JUST as much whining about when they’re gonna get it and whether or not it’ll work with their POS Curve or only on the POS Storm.

It’s the same with the iPhone jailbreak community. The only difference is that with the speed google is adding features to Android, there is CONSTANT wonder as to when it’ll come to their phone. Who doesn’t want new and innovative features? You don’t? You are perfectly happy waiting at least a year for things like cut and paste?

When the original Moto Droid users bitched and whined about not getting multitouch on a platform perfectly capable of utilizing it, what happened? Google listened and gave it to us in 6 months and that’s just one example. I’m pretty sure that doesn’t suck.

In short, what you think you understand is only what you want to see.

as long as the phone comes to sprint i will be happy. i can wait. a cell phone is not that important. it is just a device. even though it is a device that i want badly.

  • Pervy

    Is Rogers on CDMA network?

    • mangenius

      No

  • drewdogg

I thought the phone looked cool, till I actually played with one… BB is still so far behind ):

  • BuddyBoy

IMHO, the torch is pretty cool because of it’s slide out keyboard. Ask anyone who uses one of these devices for what they were designed for (email) and they will tell you the torch is a great idea. Honestly, the torch is the only device that does everything reasonably well, touchscreen, physical keyboard and trackpad. The rest do one thing really well, and it is not email.

I’m a corporate BB user who’s phone bill is paid for 100%. So to have a BB like the Torch is the cat’s @$$ in my opinion.

    • qwertyTouch

Wow! A “corporate BB user”, who says “cat’s @$$”? Colour me confused.

  • Andrew

Dear RIM: Just give me a Bold 9000 with OS6, slightly bigger touch screen with high screen resolution while doing away with the middle row of buttons – those are a waste of space and not needed with touchscreen.
    Thanks

  • Steve

I enjoyed the video although every time they panned in on the device my eyes were drawn to the left (o)(o)

  • Sid

How about a release date for the Galaxy S, Rogers?

  • max

Who gives a shit. Doa handset using a pos OS.

  • Douglas

Haha, this blog entry about the Torch seems like comic relief after reading about all the modern tech releases firm Apple today. Shit, this might as well been a joke about an old 2001 Palm device. My feeling pretty much sums up what RIM has become in my eyes, and this comes from a current BlackBerry 9700 user. I’m moving to the Verizon or T-Mobile iPhone whenever it’s released. Yes, I’m more productive on a BB but life is more than just work. And yes, I am an adult so no hackneyed “BlackBerrys are for adults” bs, please.

    • canistel

Please go… and take your comments with you; nobody here actually cares what you think about bb.

  • scott

any word if the torch will be on fido?
