Images of fourth generation iPod Touch screen suggest front-facing camera

Rumor

MacRumors is reporting that they have acquired images of the front LCD screen for the yet-to-be-released fourth generation Apple iPod Touch. The upper ribbon-cable that connections the display to the logic board reads “Apple 2010″ and the part looks extremely similar to the screen used by the iPhone 4. The front panel also has a gap where a front-facing camera would presumably go. We are starting to wonder how Apple is going to market the new iPod Touch, and what the fate of the older hard-drive based iPod will be. Any guesses?

Realistically, who cares how they market the darn thing. It’s still going to sell like hotcakes. I’m already thinking of upgrading my 32gig to something bigger and this is the next obvious choice…

With any sort of luck, they’ll have fixed the iOS4 battery issues though.

You think they’ll be dropping the 64 or 128?

How much will this cost? Why pay more for this when you can get the iPhone for cheaper? Extra storage is the only bonus…I don’t have a huge song library…ain’t to thang. Still waiting for VZ iPhone…

Was this a serious question? An unlocked iPhone retails for $600-800, the reason if you buy through AT&T it’s “cheaper” is the tradeoff for the monthly contract fees that don’t apply to the iPod touch.

For one simple reason. There are a lots and lots of Apple fanboys but not all fanboys are happy with iPhone, and even fewer are happy with iPhour.

So why sell your soul to a phone carrier iPhone if all you want is iPod? Do you know you iPod is wifi enabled and you can make free calls using Gooogle-Voice+Gizmo5? or Skype for that matter?

      A: I don’t want an Iphone.
      B: I don’t want to use at&t
C: Extra storage for people like me is desired, my library consists of over 20,000 songs.
D: Why wait for just a verizon iphone? Why not just fight for exclusive contracts to end so fair competition and reasonable pricing is brought to the US?

I will deff. be upgrading, now I can facetime with the new thing for sprint which turns your ipod into a phone lol.

Yeah, I was thinking about that. I would definitely consider upgrading my ipod touch to this newer version once it comes out.

It’s about time ! This will definitely be a purchase when it’s available . I’ve been using my 80 GB iPod for a while . But I am curious about the price .

iPod classic will be aroud for a while. Maybe they will at some point use a solid state flash based hard drive but the form factor is timeless, rugged and easy to use. The classic is perfect for in-car integration with factory and aftermarket stereo systems and doesn’t have all the bells and whistles that are not needed for something like that. I love my 80gb classic and I love my iPhone 4. An iPod touch isn’t practical for my needs and thousand’s if not millions of other people’s needs…Long live the classic!!!

    • $incere

      I second that!!

I have an 80GB Classic that’s sole job is to sit in the glove compartment and feed tunes to my in dash player. I also have shuffle which I upgraded to a touch so I can use the Nike+ when I work out in the gym. My 80GB is a beast and rugged and has taken a beating but still works like a champ.

I work in New Haven CT and yesterday I was walking through YALE and a tour bus full of “VISITORS” were walking around. This is where I saw the 4G Ipod. It looked like a 3Gs however paper thin. It looked like it had both front facing and rear cam.

Ipod touch4 without calling abilities ? Iphone 4? Lol. All joking aside, I’ve got an X and I will definitely purchase one of these. I almost miss my 3GS but att was not worth the headaches. Hopefully it’ll have the new form factor too!

If true, it looks like the iPod Touch will be getting the retina display, judging solely by the blackness of the panel shown. The LCD screen looked grey in the old panels (when off or disconnected) while the retina displays are black like shown. Could be they are just laminating the 320×480 panels to the glass the same as the retinas, but I bet buying in larger bulk helps Apple to add this premium screen to the lower cost iPod.

As I understand it, iPod touches are usually announced in Sept, right? Anyone know the date of whatever the apple event is in September yet?
Also, when they do announce them, are they usually on sale right away or some months away?

  • tande04

They’re going to market it just like they alway market it.

They haven’t had any trouble selling iPod touches before and I don’t know how adding two cameras to it is going to make it a tougher sell.

I know I’m going to think about replacing my beat up old 1G.

  • Joseph

an iPod Touch with a retina display, two cameras, and b/g/n wifi would be a powerful seller. It will be gimped in some form or fashion by Apple so that they have something to improve upon for the next upgrade cycle, however. This is what causes me stress. It will not have full iPhone 4 hardware. I am guessing it will have the 3MP camera or not have the retina display, or not do wifi n, something will be missing. Less RAM maybe. I don’t know. I just know I want one;)

    @ Walter Sobchak

It’s nothing more than a hunch, but yes, I suspect there will be a memory upgrade to 64/128 gig. With Toshiba pumping out 64gb NAND chips, it only makes sense that Apple would pick them up for 4g Touches.

  • Kendall Spann

I think this will come out in September like other apple products have. I can’t wait to get my hands on this.

  • Dave

I really think that the new ipod touch will have a front facing camera but I HIGHLY doubt that it would have a back camera. because apple would not put every function that iphone 4 has on the ipod touch beside a phone function as it would hurt the iphone 4 sells. even if they ever did add a back camera which i think they wouldn’t they might just add a lower res camera like the 3gs camera. thats my prediction but hey I could be wrong and if they do add both cameras for front and back like the iphone 4 that would be amazing for people that want to buy an ipod touch.
