Eric Schmidt: Google activating 200,000 Android handsets per diem

General

We told you about Android’s worldwide growth, then about their Q2 U.S. sales figures, so how about some more data! Google CEO Eric Schmidt noted that his company is now activating 200,000 Android handsets every single day. That is up from 160,000 per day in June, and 100,000 in May. We’ve seen several of you in the comments question whether the Android venture was worth it for Google, as they are not directly profiting from the operating systems sales. When Schmidt was asked if the Android venture was worth it, he responded that the idea of Android was to further grow their search business. Schmidt then quipped, “Trust me that [search business] revenue is large enough to pay for all of the Android activities and a whole bunch more.” Google’s CEO was also caught saying he “loved the success of the iPhone.” We’ve got the video conversation queued up for you after the break.

That was funny, but I think people didn’t get the latin joke.

    The iPhone is so 2007.

  • WTF

    @Roc Sta

    Seriously? Are you ?

Rock on Google! Do your thing. Finding a way to offer something and make money off of it. I love it!!!!!

    • http://cabinics.com David

Sorry should be offer something for free.

  • Riley

Google largest spyware company on the planet.

Google fanboys can enjoy their android spyware operating system.

    • pogobi

Yeah right, lets first ignore the fact that apple does the same but hasnt warned the user about (when saving gps data etc).
Then, lets ignore the fact that google allows you to shut down most (i cant say all because, well, they might still gather some data elsewhere) ways they get your data.
Lets ignore that Android is Open Source and you can basically do whatever you want.
Oh, and lets ignore the fact that everything is free and you must willingly participate! There is no pressure whatsoever.

I dont wanna say Google is the best company around when it comes to privacy (far from it), but there are many companies out there who are worse. And at least you know what you are getting yourself into when using Google Software.

But hey, better to just call all Google Users fanboys and sheeps!

      • MikeD

Honestly. I understand your wanting to defend Google. But be totally honest. If Apple were caught doing the things that Google got caught doing, you would be lining up to sign petitions. Screaming for maistream media to all over Apple’s butt like antennagate.

I think what @Riely pointed out was the ignoring is done by people like yourself as well. Hypocrisy.

Whats sickening is all sides have very few rational users. I see this idiocy spreading like wildfire. Sheep calling sheep, sheep. What a vicious cycle. tsk tsk tsk.

      • Jesus H Christ

Thank you Sheriff for defending Apple yet again.

      • MikeD

Not defending Apple. Just tired of the crappy comments on BGR.

Since you guys refuse to be balanced in criticism. I’ll spread it around.

Wherever you see apphole’s name being tarnished… wherever evil triumphs over good…
Duh duh duh dah…. Mike D and his little sidekock jarret to the rescue!

      • phil dough

how can you so blindly defend a company whose policies blatantly violate the constitution? And not some obscure amendment but our freedom of speech.

      • pogobi

Uhm, “If Apple were caught doing…”

They were. They secretly saved all the user movement data and even sold it to other companies. Yes, anonymous, but still.
        Google does the same but
        - you can turn it off
        - you have to ACCEPT it and get a warning first

Oh, and concerning the WLAN disaster Google just had in Germany (where i am from, so i guess i know a bit about that): Yes, they screwed up. Funnily tho, there are many companies out there specialized on basically driving around and cartographing all the Hotspots. Apple has a Company that does just that, exactly like Google. But when evil Google does it, its a part of their Big Brother Masterplan, when Apple does it, its just for the Consumer!

Where exactly am i biased here or a Hypocrit when im pointing out that Apple does exactly the same Google does but doesnt get a shitstorm when it comes out?

so why exactly am i a Fanboy?

      • MicroNix

What do you think happens to all the data Genius sends over to Apple? All data for Apple to market music to you. And that’s just iTunes not to mention what’s on the iPhone. So let’s be honest on both sides. All companies are collecting data to profit from one way or the other.

      • pogobi

“I think what @Riely pointed out was the ignoring is done by people like yourself as well. Hypocrisy. ”

And where the f*ck do you see me writing as a mindless fanboy?
May i quote? “I dont wanna say Google is the best company around when it comes to privacy (far from it)”

I am well aware of my privacy options and the privacy problems on my Google account, why does that make me a fanboy?

Ah, now i get it. Im only not “biased” when i dont write ANYTHING positive about Google and only write my last quote again:

“I dont wanna say Google is the best company”
        HAPPY NOW?

    • RT

and apple is the biggest communist company outside of north korea, no one is perfect!

  • Spotmark

Yeah, but haven’t you heard? According to Beatweek, as soon as Verizon launches a CDMA iPhone, that will be the end of Android. Lol, what a bunch of morons.

    • Jay

“According to Beatweek, as soon as Verizon launches a CDMA iPhone, that will be the end of Android.”?

That’s like saying according to Beetweek, everyone enjoys delicious rich red beets for breakfast. Sometimes with Cheerios.

    • Brad

Wow, so one opinionated commentary on one website is guaranteed to be an accurate prediction about the future? I have no doubt that Verizon will get the iPhone, but I also have no doubt that Android will continue to thrive. As long as Apple continues their anti-consumer business practices, I don’t believe there is any significant threat to Android in the long term.

Besides, it’s no longer an unknown OS that requires a “wait and see” attitude. Android has already surpassed the iPhone and all other platforms in smartphone market share in the USA, and as you can see, it’s up from 100K activations per day to 200K activations per day in just two months’ time. Granted, not all of these are new activations (some are likely factory resets, people upgrading to new phones, etc.), but the fact remains that its popularity is growing exponentially. I really don’t think that the iPhone being limited to AT&T for the moment is the sole reason for that explosive growth.

    • shugmeat

Cdma iPhone….. death of android? Doubt it. I sold my iPhone and got a DInc and I actually prefer it to the iPhone. Yes, partly because the iPhone is only on shi&t… I mean at&t, but TO ME, a better user experience with android.

    • ViniD

I think when verizon get the new iphone the former blackberry users and some ppl new to smartphones will get the iphone but the ppl that have used android will stick to the android because it has so much customizability. I had the iPhone 2g and 3g. But then when i tried my friends Droid i was like i need one and now I have the Captivate and I dont think i could ever go back to the iPhone it was a headache jailbreaking then a new update comes out wait for a jailbreak and then jailbreak again.

      • Steve

So you traded that for root, update, root again. Sounds identical.

    • Chut Pata

Verizon launching CDMA iPhone will not be the end of Android, it would be the end of Verizon. iPhour will screw Verizon bandwidth inside out. First Verizon would be forced to end its unlimited data plan and shift to tiered ones like AT&T had to. Then it will have to change their bogged down system with a faster one to avoid dropped calls.

Beatweek morons do not know that iPhone is not the only phone AT&T customers buy. A very large number still buys Blackberry, and a very large number is going towards Android phones like Samsung Captivate.

    • MicroNix

Yeah, “as soon as”. We’ve been hearing “as soon as” for the last 2 years. At this point Verizon doesn’t need Apple. They are proving you don’t need the iPhone to have awesome sales. Same with Sprint. Despite all the odds in Apple’s favor, Android is kicking them in the US and all around the globe. Here, let me get a Kleenex for you.

  • Darius Blevins

I didn’t know Bob Saget worked for Google (check far right of photo)

  • serpentor

Is that Levar Burton sitting in with them?

  • Ernie

I love their success. I love google and their services. What I find interesting though is that fandroids, notthe everyday google and android users are more interested in beating apple, as evident in these blogs, than the progress of their own chose platform. Today is google, tomorrow is x company if proven that for some reason things slow down for google. Simply look at microsot and rim. A lot of you guys were with those platforms simply because of your uncontrollable hatred of apple. Which I simply don’t get. Because I am a technology fanboy, not of any particular company.

    • James

Ernie…that is not a true statement. In my house we have 2 iMacs and iPad a Macbook and a Macbook Pro and an iPhone 3G. I switched from the iPhone 4 to and HTC EVO because I was getting the signal loss issue with my iphone. Apple told me first I was holding the phone wrong then told me just to stop whining and use a free bumper to get a fully functional iphone. So I switched. I still love Apple products but will never buy a iphone again!

    • Dane

If you’re the same Ernie that has posted other comments, make no mistake, you’re a fanboy of a particular company, and that company is Apple.

But even this post of yours smacks of Apple fanboyism. Leave it to an Apple fan to, basically, make the argument that people chose non-iPhone products solely based on their feelings towards Apple. It’s not all about Apple. Some people can (gasp) actually like a product that competes with an Apple product better than the Apple product. Really. And I say that as a macbook user.

    • Put a Band-aid on it…Stay tuned…

Funny as a technology fanboy I figured that would be reason not to be an Apple Fanboy seeing as how they do less than their competition and charge more for it. Android has more features and functionality surprised to see you chose the simpler entry-level iOS. The reason people are becoming disenfranchised with the Iphone is because its behind the times when comapared to its competition and full of restrictions.

    • Rob D.

“A lot of you guys were with those platforms simply because of your uncontrollable hatred of apple”

How on earth could you possibly know that? Do you keep tabs on everyone who bashes apple and what they bash apple for?

Or could it possibly be that people have a genuine opinion and not all of them are going to be pro apple? Welcome to the internet. Time to buy a clue Ernie.

      • MicroNix

Not so. I owned 2 iPod Touches before purchasing a Droid. Your statement is flawed.

      • Rob D.

Wait what? My logic that “people have genuine opinions and not all then are going to be pro apple” is flawed?

  • http://www.absolutefiction.com [rono]

    Way to go Google!
Now make something really serious with Android 3.0.
    We’re counting on you guys.

  • James

Well I switched from a iPhone 4 to a HTC EVO and love the difference! I don’t have to have an case on my phone now for it to be fully functional! :-)
Also there is not one app I used on the iPhone that could not be found for free in the Market Place.

  • PAPINYC

I spent 8 years on Verizon and those same 8 years using Windows Mobile “Dumbphones” and, while I haven’t any complaints about Verizon’s voice or data network as I found the services reliable and solid, I do agree that both Verizon and the iPhone are so 2007.
While on Verizon I used a combination of Verizon contract devices coupled with a few off-contract (prepaid) devices, namely the iPhone. I used Verizon’s EVDO (REV 0 and REV A speeds) for internet and data and Unlocked/Jailbroken iPhones for voice and entertainment (T-mobile).

I now only need 1 phone; 1 smartASSphone, the EVO.
    Yes it’s Android (FROYO)!
    Yes it’s Sprint!
    Multiple phones no longer needed.

I don’t miss Verizon’s service; I was willing to give Sprint another chance after 8 years and it has definitely paid off for me. And, definitely don’t miss my iPhones (traded those into Sprint for credit when I bought my EVO June 4th, almost $200–And, before anyone says that I lost money on the iPhones, I bought them used and in need of repair on Craigslist for CHEAP).

Android can only get better and FROYO rules (until we get 3.0, of course) !!!

  • Steve

I’m not knocking Android at all, but Google’s management of Android seems very reminiscent of the way Sun managed JAVA in that everyone else made most of the money! 200k handsets a day and Google’s making how much? Schmidt appears to have given away a golden goose.

    • DInc

They don’t make anything on Android OS. What they do make is revenue on advertisements and using your data. Google FTW.

      • MikeD

        @Dlnc

Which is the genius of Google. They make dough no matter what, from multiple platforms whether or not its a Android device. They literally are everywhere.

I dare anybody with connectivity on a smartphone or a laptop or desktop to try to not touch and of Googles tendrils. You will be very hard pressed like trying to avoid goods made in China. Android just gives Google a more direct access to your data for them to mine and push ads and compile stats. Which is the real root of their business. Its almost like a grand “Human behavior” project.

      • WalterSobchak

Whick means they probably have a huge folder on all the nasty things you say about them so when they do overthrow all the worlds govs you will probably be in the first lot sent to reeducation camps, sitting right next to your buddy jarret. Glansburg bought his way off that train. Maybe you should look to him for example(still very bitter, but at least plays along)

  • spotmark

Guys, I think you missed the sarcasm of my post. Beatweek has their lips so firmly attached to Steve Jobs’ butt, that I’m sure they can taste his breakfast.

  • OC’d Droid

Who let that guy at the start ask questions?
He just said words until Eric made a question out of them.

  • Debbie

Wow. 200,000 per day? Total? For all the many companies… and all the many Android models?

Why is that still *LESS* than just 1 phone: the iPhone

Why not compare sales figures for *ONE* Android model… with *ONE* iPhone model.

    • AtlHarry

Because Google (the article IS about Google) doesn’t care about individual phone manufacturers. They aren’t in the phone hardware business (not anymore at least). They are in the ANDROID business.

When the bloggers write about Motorola or HTC’s sales numbers compared to iPhone, then you can inject what will THEN be a relevant comment.

    • Dane

Because Google isn’t concerned with hardware. They don’t even make hardware. They’re concerned with market share, as any successful company should be. Google’s aim was to prevent one company from ruling the smartphone market and, by virtue of that fact, having the capacity to shut Google out. As the mounting figures clearly indicate… mission accomplished.

And if that was sarcasm in your first paragraph, perhaps you just don’t understand the situation. Sarcasm at 200,000 activations per day? Wow, indeed.

    • Put a Band-aid on it…Stay tuned…

Its not less than the Iphone. Android outsold Iphone 33% to 21% this past quarter. And They outsold Iphone by 28% to 21% the quarter before that. Know the Facts before you run your mouth fanboy.

      • MikeD

Okay what are you guys really comparing.

iOS (3 device lines) vs Android ( 20+ device lines)

iOS smartphone vs Android smartphones (10+ smartphones)

I’m tired of reading all these misleading comments and articles. Work with real facts and fair comparisons.

Apple makes 1 phone. They do not license it.

Google makes an OS and license it to any who want

Samsung, HTC, Motorola and other Android smartphone makers are not I repeat, are not on the same side.

Not One Android device has had the equal success of an iPhone. Not One. (Although I think in a few years Motorola will be the first to before any other Android maker.)

Collectively Android does outsell the iPhone specifically. thats a 10+ phones vs 1 fight.

The Fandroids are so obsessed with Apple that they don’t realize the FAIR fight is with RIM, and Blackberry blows away Androids in sales.

Apple doesn’t give a rats butt about being #1 in marketshare. You guys just don’t get it. Is Mercedes #1 in marketshare? or maybe BMW? or Lotus? No. They are far outsold by Ford, Toyota and Honda. And guess what, business is fine for them though they don’t have the largest marketshare. They do have much higher satisfaction rates, which leads to return customers, which is one of the holy grails to having a strong brand. The customer comes back to specifically to that company.

I cannot wait til Android gets the Market share that Fandroid crazies(not all Android users) desire so much like Smegal does the ring, because then they will be left with the nagging question of whats next?

A lot of tech savvy people here but far too many here commenting have no clue about BUSINESS.

Here are some suggested articles for BGR:

Whats the rate of brand loyalty among Android consumers? Y’know, people who plan to stay on the Android platform. Yeah I said people. Not idiots or fanboys. Just because people may want to stick with one platform doesn’t automatically make them a sheep. (Yes thats aimed at hypocrites. you know who you are)

Are they sticking with their initial Android manufacturer or did they switch to another Android manufacturer?

If they did switch, why? (Mission critical info any company would want to know)

How likely are they to return to the very same Android manufacturer of their current Android device/smartphone?

These questions make more business sense since Motorola, HTC and Samsung and many others are all fighting for the same piece of Android pie.

But nooooo that doesn’t mean anything around here because its more fun to have FANBOY wars. Even the serious business sites and magazines fall in to this trap.

      • Mark

        Well said Mike

      • WalterSobchak

        Good article….
How many people have been able to leave the icult affter drinking the koolaid.
You are the reason people hate apple. Not apple. YOU!

      • MikeD

        @WalterSobchak

The reason why y’all hate Apple and RIM users as well. (Theres a lot of hate thrown at them as well on BGR) Is because they are happy with their choice of product.

I’m not defending dorkish behavior of which all sides have people guilty of. But the Hateboys on BGR seem to harras Apple, RIM and anyone who don’t glow all about Android. To the point that When reasonable Android users levy a critique at Android, the Hateboys then consume their own like piranha.

What you actually hate is the fact that more and more people on many platforms are tired of the fanboy wars. The hateboys are being smoked out. People want reasonable conversations and civil debate.

I will say it again. All the bitching the haters do about Apple actually helps Apple. If you hate them stop complaining about them and chat more about what needs to fixed in the platform of your choice. That would help them. But instead the bitching and carping is just giving the solutions away to the very thing you hate the most.

        You mad yet? :-)

      • Dane

I take exception to your statement that HTC, Samsung, et al. are not on the same side. For Google’s purposes and Android’s purposes (and this article is, let’s face it, about Google and Android), they certainly are on the same side.

As for your statement about iOS v. Android, I candidly confess that I don’t have the numbers (and that I’m simply too lazy to look them up); however, presupposing that Apple currently holds a lead in the OS matchup, the numbers that I have been reading about Android’s growing market share percentages (coupled with the falling market share percentages of the competitors, including Apple) indicate that Android is well serving Google’s goal: to prevent any company from freezing them out of the mobile marketplace. I need you to read that sentence at least twice because, without understanding it, the following will make no sense: that fact renders all of your speak about the unfairness of 10 phones v. 1 phone or 20 manufacturers v. 1 manufacturer or X devices v. 3 devices completely irrelevant. You’re simply missing the whole point.

And, finally, it renders irrelevant your statements about BMW v. Ford. Google is the BMW, etc. of the search engine market. As a macbook user, I like Apple (and have successfully proselytized their laptops to a couple of friends). I don’t like their phone. I don’t like their walled garden approach. I don’t like their paternalistic statements about battery usage. Frankly, it’s my battery and I’ll kill it the way I want. It’s my phone and I’ll subject it to the risks I wish to subject it to. And I’m shocked and appalled by the way they handled the whole antenna/proximity sensor issues on their new flagship mobile device (especially having seen the issue on the only iPhone 4′s I’ve played with… those my friends have). It makes me wonder how different Apple would have been regarding their computers if they HAD won the PC war. But Apple does bring good competition to the table, and I can, at least, appreciate that. I just like the fact that the competition is beginning to eat their lunch.

So… the question is… with all the handwriting on the wall… are you mad yet? ;)

      • Rob D.

I honestly don’t get the comparison people keeping bringing up. About Apple’s 1 phone vs Androids 20. And how once one of Android phones can beat the iPhone in 1vs1 sales. Then it will matter. I seriously think anyone who makes this comparison is mentally handicapped.

No single Android phone will make the sales of the iPhone. Because what Google has done is given us (the consumer) a choice. We get to say, OK, I know I want the Android OS. Now which phone best suits my needs.

Where as Apple has a strangle hold on their consumers. They say this is what you need. This is what you want. This is how we want our phone. So this is what you want in your phone. Anything you might want your phone to do that the iPhone doesn’t do. Doesn’t matter.

The only reason the iPhone sells so well is because anyone who wants the iOS doesn’t get a choice in the phone the can get. If Apple allowed other manufacturers to develop phones with the iOS. You wouldn’t see the iPhone sales as high as they are right now or on launch day.

Anyone remember the “1984″ Mac commercial? Where everyone is marching in single file. They all look the same. With shaved heads and grey jumpsuits. A guy on a teleprompter is telling everyone
“My friends, each of you is a single cell in the great body of the State. And today, that great body has purged itself of parasites. We have triumphed over the unprincipled dissemination of facts. The thugs and wreckers have been cast out. And the poisonous weeds of disinformation have been consigned to the dustbin of history. Let each and every cell rejoice! For today we celebrate the first, glorious anniversary of the Information Purification Directive! We have created, for the first time in all history, a garden of pure ideology. Where each worker may bloom secure from the pests purveying contradictory truths. Our Unification of Thoughts is more powerful a weapon than any fleet or army on earth. We are one people, with one will, one resolve, one cause. Our enemies shall talk themselves to death and we will bury them with their own confusion. We shall prevail!”
A lady is being chased by guards and she runs into a room with a sledge hammer and smashes the display of the evil corporation. Essentially liberating the world.

Well iPhone users are the marching sheep. Apple has become the evil corporation. Google is now the girl with the sledgehammer. And Steve Jobs is the guy on the teleprompter.

      • MicroNix

I was good reading until I got to this statement:

“Apple doesn’t give a rats butt about being #1 in marketshare. ”

And then I knew you were full of s**t. And you wonder why your comments are always rated negative…

  • Petraeus Prime

I choose a sony x10 over the iphone 4 and i don’t regret a thing. In fact I am going to choose another android smartphone over the iphone 5.

Let’s face it, I already have a ipod touch 2g and the walled garden approach gets you frustrated at the company after a short time.

@Debbie, why not compare mac sales against *ONE* pc company (eg dell or hp or sony or ….), we all know how that worked out for apple, LAWL.

Platform ubiquity is the name of the game here, hardware and OS prices are in a race to the bottom, and the real profit is going to come from services. Google has the big picture in mind, which is why they are going to dominate the mobile market of the future.

    • Mark

but but but the Iphone sold 3 million in 3 days. Plus we can now after 4 years put a pic as wallpaper. Thats inovation. Why would we want to customize our phones? I like that my phone is exactley the way Steve Jobs wants it. Yeaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

    • RT

dont forget the argument of “but apple made a bigger profit”… as if thats somehow going to benefit the consumer.

      • MikeD

Apple’s action as of recent has brought about:

        Cheaper music

        Cheaper movies

        Cheaper mobile apps

The profit comes from sizable volumes of content being bought. I’d say the customers are benefitting. Hell and not just on Apple’s ecosystem, but their actions forced pressure through out the industry. So Android users benfitted too. And if Google can pressure prices to go lower, guess what? ITS STILL ALL GOOD, for all platforms because of the ripple effect.

So honestly what are you really trying to say? really?

      • Jesus H Christ

Sheriff you sure love your Apple.

      • MikeD

I love technology. You see I’m a real Technologist.

Run along now, don’t you have some App to pirate or some phone to root or jailbreak.

      • RT

dont think for a second that you are getting things cheaper because apple is extremely profitable. If anything the fact that they have a large army of followers who will buy anything with an apple logo stops them from lowering prices anymore. It also leads to amazing customer service like “your holding the phone the wrong way”. You think for one second that a company that didnt have the mindless followers like apple would be able to get away with comments like that? And yes, there are plenty more examples of things like that. Bottom line is they know that almost anything they put out will sell, why on earth would they discount prices as low as they could.

      • MikeD

Antennagate is so last month. Guess what the world has moved on. Thats why we are talking about Android handsets selling well. Not “Lets bitch about Apple” or “Call for Apple’s demise again.”

      • Mark

Larger profit margins allow for more growth, more growth allows for newer and stronger product lines, more product lines, more sales, more sales, more stores, more stores, more JOBS created. Dont be so narrow minded.

  • EndHaiku

These numbers don’t add up. Moto+HTC barely shipped half that volume of smartphones in 2Q10 and, even then, not all of those were Android devices. Perhaps there was a bit of pent up demand driving a week or two of Droid X activations, but no serious analyst is expecting, what, 18.2 million Android phones to ship in 3Q 2010.

    Truth to power, biatches.
