Morning smartphone OS roundup: iOS 4.1 beta 2, Froyo for Galaxy S, Incredible with 2.2 and Sense

Software

What happened with smartphone OS’ overnight? Here’s what…

Apple released a second beta of their iOS 4.1 software to users enrolled in the Apple developer program. The biggest addition seen in the 4.1 code — when compared with the 4.0.1 code — is the inclusion of the Game Center for developers to begin testing.

Now, if you like to be edgier than beta — and rock Android — two unofficial builds of Android 2.2 for the recently released Samsung Galaxy S have been unleashed. If you’re feeling really adventurous, give it a whirl.

Also from the Android camp, Android 2.2 with Sense UI has been shoehorned onto the HTC DROID Incredible. This one is courtesy of the folks over at XDA and comes with the following warning: “A full wipe and 2.x radio is required.” As with all XDA posts, there is a pretty thorough guide to assist you.

Enjoy!

Meanwhile, somewhere up in the Candian alps, RIM’s engineers were fast asleep after a hard day’s work of not improving anything.

    • Chris

That is a ridicules and moronic statement! RIM engineers have NOT been sleeping in the Canadian Alps. Their the Rockies and they’ve been sleeping, fishing, hanging out with hot Canadian ladies and drinking our kick ass beer! Welcome to the Great White North EHH!

Compared to what all other OS’s are doing right now, RIM is sleeping.

I really like BlackBerrys, but I’m glad I’m rockin’ Android on an EVO.

And this is by far one of the funniest comments I’ve read on BGR!

I for one am really excited to see what Apple has in store for the ‘Game Center’

Im starting to realize, especially with the latest builds of Android that you really can’t go wrong with either platform now. They both are constantly improving….thanks to eachother. Apple ‘s iOS4 requires less work and executes what it is supposed to do well and Android 2.1+ gives you the option to push the limits of your hardware even if it compromises some aspects.

The best part about Android now to me at least is that rooting is largely unneeded with the DX where as if i had one of the ancient android devices that have been for over two months already it would be essential.

Only thing left to make Googles Android ecosystem better is a true music sync like itunes because like it not, that system just works.

    • Mikey

I’m so glad that the ONLY thing Android needs is better media sync.

Personally IDGRA about music sync so I kinda disagree.

I want to see a nicer UI, continued improvements in general and more vanilla Android devices that have a good spec.
Oh and tablets – Can’t wait to get rid of my iPad when there is an Android alternative.

    • Mikey

      Oops I forgot to say…

“iTunes just works” is an appropriate phrase I must say. I have it on one of my computers and I must agree it only just works. IMHO it’s crap! I can’t believe that iTunes is so badly coded after so many years to get it right. Its memory consumption and CPU hogging nature is freakin terrible.

If Android just worked in that same way as iTunes just works I would never have bought an Android powered phone.

    • WalterSobchak

      Oh come on dude. Itunes?
My conspiracy is that itunes is made to absolutely trash, ravage and destroy pcs.
It has like 27 running processes.
Why do people not like drag and drop?
Anyones computer, any operating system(even ubuntu) can get music to and from an android phone. Why is that hard?
Did I just take the GlansBait?

    Where’s WP7?

    • Mikey

      It’s in the future…
If you time travel to October/November time frame then you’ll get to see it…

But just remember the time-travelers code. “You can’t bring it back and you can’t talk about it!” Otherwise I could tell you some great stories about WP7.

    Mikey, Kin Three?

Sounds good; I just can’t figure out what he’s talking about. :-)

  • StevieJobs

I think im going to wait for the OTA for the Incredible since the release of the leaked version probably means the public will see it sooner than later. Hope im right!

Can anyone in the developer program tell us whether 4.1 images are available for the iPad?

    • Andrew Munchbach

      They are not.

  • Seabass

I’m exited to see it on my Captivate but when will it happen? If it’s not soon enough I might jump back to BB slider I miss my keyboard.
