Mobile Platform Developers Poll

Do Android developers outnumber iPhone developers? If you believe this survey of 401 mobile developers than yes, yes they do. Vision Mobile, a “market analysis and strategy firm delivering market know-how to the mobile industry,” have a poll that indicates that more mobile application developers have experience with Google’s Android platform than with any other mobile platform, including Apple’s iOS. Developers polled cited: large market penetration, speed of development, potential to make money, and low cost dev tools as reasons for initially choosing Android. Developers indicated that they have the most experience in Android, followed by iOS, Java ME, Symbian, then “mobile web.” We should note, the poll asked developers which mobile platform(s) they had experience coding in, so it was possible to answer with multiple platforms. Hit the read link to see some additional charts from Vision Mobile.

I love android and like to believe whatever positive things I read about it, but this sample was probably of Devs from Google IO

It’s kinda funny how much precidence is put on this ‘competition’ of the number of Devs for each platform…it’s well known that the iPhone has been the only player in the game for a few years and has done a great job at marketing not only the device but all the apps available for it…now it has some REAL competition with the advent of the Android platform. Being a huge Mac fan and a devoted Verizon user, I’ve longed for an iPhone on Verizon…BUT…I think Android has Apple shakin’ in thier boots with the amount of customization an ‘open platform’ device can provide…having the ability to develop apps to munipulate just about every aspect of the Android operating platform including custom themes, keyboards, widgets, etc. has a distinct advantage over Apple, regardless of the simplicity of the app submission to the Market…inferior apps developed will simply be deleted by the user and the Android Market will continue to grow @ a greater pace than iOS for the simple reason there is not ‘Big Brother’ (Apple) wanting total control over such submissions.

Ever since that fiasco with BGR and Apple PR I’m noticing posts from BGR drifting over to anti-apple and I can’t say I blame the guy too. However, I really don’t know what to make of that whole issue. Its clear the Apple still has the advantage with the amount of developers with Android in pursuit so I don’t know why this wasn’t researched more than just 400+ surveys. Engadget had a more extensive look at this and showed Apple in a huge lead for now with developers. I’m glad Android is gaining momentum, that would force Apple to open up more and get the iphone to another carrier quicker.

yeah, I think you misread the headline on that one. two completely different surveys. The other survey question was ‘which mobile device are you interested in developing for’ this survey seems to be a bit more direct in asking which one have you develop for.
      .
not that this is really a definitive answer in any way, ‘develop’ could mean someone made a ‘hello world’ for the platform, but nothing meaningful, or even anything that was released to the wild.
      .
As you no doubt can see, both this survey, and the other survey of which you reference are both done independently, without being influenced by any special ties to one side or the other, so it is what it is, and it is just people asking questions that provide answers and people latching on to what numbers they want.

Sorry… but when Bada and BREW developers outnumber you (web os), you know you aren’t long for this world… and then a company with such an outstanding track record for quality like hp purchases you, it’s time to abandon ship.

Main reason is that developers for Apple are restricted to use only Apple Workstations.

  • Darwin

Assuming that is true it’s also irrelevant for now. Apple has many more apps and higher quality apps.

How funny, I personnaly developp on all platforms but iphone !
Android rocks for sure, even though Bada seems to have a good potential.
However, I think there is an error in the graphics as I doubt there are so many WP7 developpers… I think it should read Windows Mobile instead.

    cheers
