Hulu a ways away from being HTML5 ready

In a blog post discussing some new features that were recently rolled out, Hulu’s Eugene Wei took a moment to outline some of the reasons why HTML5 won’t be a part of the video streaming websites for a while yet. Planted inconspicuously between talk of “meeting the needs of its customers,” and delivering “premium visual quality,” Wei mentioned that the primary setbackĀ has to do with DRM, or more accurately the lack of support for it. Without DRM, Wei said that Hulu would not be able to “secure [its] content,” which would essentially allow anyone to save the videos they’re watching as easily as they could save a photo from any given website. In light of this, it’s easy to see why so many are suspiciously watching others as they make the transition from Flash to HTML5. After all, what sort of TV network would want to distribute their content on a site that is so easy to steal from?

exactly what I was going to say. HTML5 is ways away from being Hulu ready.

    I think it’s HTML5 that’s a ways away, not Hulu.

hulu is old news now, anyone still use it? Most major networks put there shows on their own sites now

Why go to each network provider’s site when it’s all aggregated on hulu (except CBS)? And I believe networks had had streaming episodes on their own sites BEFORE hulu came about.

I’m just saying Hulu was cool, but with everyone else figuring out that people want to consume pop culture online, they will be short lived…

Should we know who you are? You sound like a complete moron.

I think Viacom pulled Daily Show from Hulu a few months ago. Can we at least get a pic of hulu that shows something you can watch on their website???

    • Bill Marino

Daily show? You’re kidding right? Speaking of shows way past their prime.

Html5 is least 2 years before it’s ready for Prime Time.. In the mean time.. Enjoy Flash.. oops.
    Froyo.. YEAH!

Man, hulu worked the other day on skyfire on my droid, only for a few hours, but those were some of the sweetest hours of my life….. mmmmmmm mobile hulu
Guess its back to sidereel and surfthechannel and megavideo. Its like they want people to obtain it through illegitimate means.

Sure HTML5 is the future, as Steve and Apple and others have mentioned, but im living in the present.

By the time HTML5 is really ready, which im sure is about 2 years from now, i’ll be needing a new phone that will be able to take advantage of HTML5 flawlessly. For now i CAN’T wait for Flash 10.1 on my Nexus One. FroYo FTW!!!

Websites should just wait until HTML5 is fully ready before switching. Whether its on a phone or computer, Flash IS what is needed NOW to watch most of these videos.

The people that are master/learning HTML 5 will be the people that will still have a job a year or two from now.

Basically whats happening is a ramping up to HTML5.

The biggest issue for HULU is actually DRM.

They’d be smart to start rolling out apps. Apps are far more responsive and super optimized.

Hulus biggest mistake was they based their whole infrastructure on Flash, a platform that Adobe owns. Hulu needs to now own their own.

    I prefer Sulu.

I use Apple and Microsoft in the course of my day. I will tell you that prior to Windows 7, crashes were a frequent occurrence on the Windows boxes while Apple crashes were almost always related to Flash. Now with Windows 7, the crashes in Windows are significantly fewer, however every crash I’ve registered since switching the machines to Windows 7 has been Flash related.

I don’t care if it’s MS or Apple, Flash just plain sucks. They either need to revamp it completely or let it die, and right now I’m voting for “let it die.” Quickly, if possible.

That fracking software is a steaming pile of dren.

Did anyone catch that Hulu uses their own codec for video? Makes me wonder if it uses hardware acceleration for better battery life…or not?

    Anyone know?
