iPhone 4 gets reviewed

So maybe it was the next iPhone. Gizmodo somehow managed to get their paws on a prototype of what’s probably sure to be the next iPhone. Not only that, but they’ve snapped a bunch of pics, shot a few videos and even tore that sucker apart. Sadly the thing won’t boot up so there is a lot of info that will remain a secret until Stevesy hits the stage at WWDC this June, but for now we know the following:

  • It measures in at  a petite 4.5″ x 2.31″ x 0.37″ and weighs 140g
  • It feels more sturdy and luxurious than the 3GS, yet feels good in the hand and in pockets despite its heft
  • The back is made of either glass or a “shiny plastic” (remember that ceramic material patent Apple holds? Could this be it?)
  • The chasis is milled aluminum
  • No way of verifying the displays resolution since it’s not possible to get past “Connect to iTunes”, but it’s definitely at a much higher resolution than previous devices
  • The camera has been improved and has a flash
  • There is indeed front-facing camera
  • Uses a micro-SIM just like the iPad
  • The 5.25 WHr at 3.7V battery has a larger capacity than does the one found in the 3GS

    I like this version more, it looks thinner yet rock solid, hopefully that is a ceramic back. If this had hdmi out then it would be the phone to beat. I hope the larger battery adds a huge amount of usage time.

    Major hit to Apple. Who will bother going to the (rumoured) release on June 22 when it’s already out there? How Does Apple build a big event and drive a frenzy of passionate buyers waiting in line for days to get the first one? The pizzazz is gone. I think someone has a major law suit to look forward to and Apple’s stock etc will take a big hit. Marketing is their magic and with nothing to hit us with in June, the whole thing deflates.

    I think its also too bad for all of us too who now have nothing to get excited about. It’s like opening your presents a month before Christmas – Christmas day is then just another day.

    And further – I know we may not have seen all the new tricks it can do, but it certainly seems to be following RIM’s strategy of no real physical changes to the phone. I dont see anything here that knocks my socks off or would make me run to the store to get one in June or whenever they are treleased. I hear the camera is just 5 megaoixels and as for the other “improvements” …….meh.

    Are some of you still being duped by this, it was publicity stunt. The ipad hype died down rather fast, Apple needed to do something. In conjunction with gizmodo, Apple came up with this pathetic publicity stunt.

        Well how about the fact that Apple has released plenty of medicore products in fancy packaging (iPad, pod, touch, shuffle) that are simply brilliantly marketed. They have solid computers and I love them, but this is definitely some magical and revolutionary marketing tactics.

        The reason why they are doing it with the 4th version and not the other 3 is because of the other products that are coming out this summer that are either just as good or better.

    I really cant wait for this phone to come out. I love my 2G iPhone, but its time to trade up. Glad I resisted getting a 3Gs.

    So they have made it thinner and added a front camera. Good, now it can compete with phones from 2007… Did anyone realize that we have phones with 3.8″ and 4.3″ 800×480 screens, 1 GHz CPUs and 512 MB of RAM?
    This thing has the same screen as the previous one. Increasing the pixel count is of no use, unless you usually hold your phone at 10 cm of your eyes… 800×480 on a 3.7″ device is small enough, no way this one can have more pixels on a 3.5″ screen.
    Look in youtube a video of an HTC Android phone playing Quake I… powerful as a Pentium II computer from a few years ago.

    I hope Gizmodo enjoys the temporary attention for outing the new iphone/prototype because it will cost them a lot of money under California’s theft by conversion law. It doesn’t matter if they did not know the property belonged to Apple. What matters is did they use the property in a way inconsistent with the owner’s intent. The answer is obviously yes.

    I still have hope that this Iphone is a mule and not the real thing, that 3.5″ screen is not cutting it any more. 4″ is more like it.

    I honestly think, that this is just a gimmick to make people think that this is the new version of the Iphone.. when really its nothing like the new one.. So maybe we still will be shocked when they finely release it in June..

    WOW THIS MAY BE THE MOST OBVIOUS PROMOTIONAL STUNT I HAVE EVER SEEN…..YOU EVER THINK THAT MAYBE APPLE PAID GIZMODO TO DO A “LEAKED” COMMERCIAL? ALL THIS IS GOING TO BE IS A PUBLICITY STUNT BY APPLE TO PROMOTE THE NEW PHONE…IT HAS EVERYONE TALKING ABOUT IT RIGHT? SO THEY HAVE ACCOMPLISHED THE MISSION… VERY WELL PLAYED THOUGH….

    Very Interesting that this rumor “leaked” around the same time as HTC/VZW’s announcement of their new device. I believe this was intentional and Steve Jobs is just trying to slow down VZW/Android/HTC sales because he has real competition now aka. Android 2.1 With the new HTC Droid Incredible arriving on the VZW network! The iphone just looks very limited these days! Too bad he didn’t beat HTC to the punch by getting the new Iphone out on VZW before they did! Suck it Jobs! Now maybe you will work a little harder to get the the new iphone out on big red! oh and it better be good!…im not against apple actually I’m using a mac book pro now. I’m just a bit frustrated that Apple hasn’t come to the table with a bit more than it has. I mean come on, the ipad is nothing more then a giant ipod touch! Step up Apple, we (VZW customers) have been waiting for a long time!

    Although I waited for the new iPhone but this ruins the magic of the new thing . But this informs the buyers prior to buying the phone I am really sad but happy (I Have bought a new 3GS recently and I wish I didn’t buy for the new 4G)

      I don’t understand how you can hate apple so much and complain about their greed or honestly consider conspiracy theories about pre launch leaks to head off competition.

      As a PC user and a loyal Microsoft Vista now Windows 7 user I appreciate a good product when I see it. I love windows devices in the proper environment, namely on large powerful computers centered on productivity work across a wide array of platforms.

      However apple takes the cake more and more when it comes to the consumer who is more inclined to style, reliability, creative design, and media consumption. Apple fills a niche very well.

      As far as droid/htc etc…. There major drawback is the OS and the hardware of all these devices that sacrifice user experience due to the vendor partnerships that don’t appear to be able to truly find the same synergies and compliments to one another as the product dev teams can within a talented and innovated company like apple can. There are some significant advantages to apple’s business model when done right and they have executed superbly.

      From what I see…. apple is still setting the bar, creating markets out of no where, and is the place to shop for the most innovative richest user experience.

      Where would the market be today had it not been for apple. Would we truly be playing with touchscreen devices, have the diffusion of portable media devices, and be moving towards greater emphasis on style and stability.
