BGR's Live Like A Genius series: Timbuk2 H.A.L.

General

Timbuk2 HAL

Here at BGR we need to be portable. Armed with a laptop, our favorite mobile device (or two), a mobile hotspot, and camera, we enjoy being mobile, agile, and hostile… when necessary. Agility and hostility come naturally to the BGR crew, but mobility is something we continuously work on. And what is the key to being mobile? A really, really ridiculously good bag. Our swag-bag of choice these days is the Timbuk2 H.A.L. (we have no idea what that stands for). The H.A.L. is specifically designed for people who carry a lot of equipment and are very active. The form-fitted straps provide easy access to your laptop while the bag is slung from one shoulder, the zippers are thick and don’t get jammed or caught, and we can’t seem to kill, or mangle, the nylon fabric that the pack is constructed from. The bag has a ton of storage space and compartments — several hidden — and can accommodate up to a 14.35” wide laptop in its armored compartment (14.35” wide is big enough to fit most 15” laptops as laptops are measured on the diagonal). Simply put: it’s a great bag. We’ve got a propaganda video from Timbuk2 queued up after the break… just in case you don’t want to take our word for it.

I love Timbuk2 bags. I’ve been using them for more than a decade. Discovered them when I was a student at the University of Washington.
Now, if they made a diaper bag, I would be in heaven. :D
What kind of camera equipment do you guys carry?
I have a Crumpler camera bag that I carry my Nikon D80 with speed flash and two lenses, my netbook, Sony digital voice recorder and iPod in but if this is good for carrying a DSLR with assorted accessories as well as my netbook, I’d be happy to go back to Timbuk2. :)

  • iJarrett

This would be magical if it were the iH.A.L.

    • Andrew Munchbach

      iHate you. LOL.

      • midibite

Andrew, nice video but Trucker hats are so 2007/08.

    • don

Dude im getting this magical feeling for you. I think its ilove. You can purchase it in 8 16 and 32g models

  • titivating

I love the easy and quick side access to your laptop. However, I don’t feel comfortable with my computer backpack in a busy subway, where they could unzip the side and quickly steal my laptop.

  • BP1002

I wonder how much BGR got paid to post this on the website

    • Andrew Munchbach

Timbuk2 paid us exactly $0.00. I rounded up.

      • Sugar Grove

Actually the Buick Lacrosse old mans car popping up all over the site paid for it

      • BBSwany

Old man’s car?!? Ok…. Obviously you haven’t seen or driven one. They are way sick!

    • titivating

maybe nothing, but they get a free Timbuk2.

      • Andrew Munchbach

I shelled out $120 for this baby just like everyone else :P

  • StevenGlansburg

I’ve actually use one of their bags for my transporting guitar cables, some pedals and other music stuff for practice/gigs…and will attest that it is high quality stuff. I’m not sure i’m ready to retire my Columbia backpack for my academic stuff, but this does look nice and I’d consider it.

  • InnocentCitizen

Is the bottom padded well so I don’t bust the end of my laptop setting the bag down?

  • Rob

    Sweet

  • MattS

I have had this exact same bag for about 3 months now. The design is awesome, but the jury is out on the materials. My Timbuk2 Data Dump from a few years ago had ballistic nylon and a rubber reinforced bottom – it feels indestructable. This bag has the Mission 6 nylon which is nicer looking but I don’t know if it will hold up as well. Also, there is no reinforcement on the bottom – a definet concern voice by several people. Still, the design easily outweighs a few fabric concerns.

next time anyone makes a propaganda video trying to market a product, please wear a freakin microphone!

    Posted from BGR Mobile (iPhone).

  • Kevin

My guess for the acronym is Highly Active Lifestle

    • Daniel Blois

I think weather that is it or not – that is a Great guess.

Since when are backpacks $120? I don’t care how “cool” or how many neat words are used to describe it, it’s over priced.

    • Daniel Blois

      Matt,

Any really good Laptop bag bag costs about that much. Do the research. The price is right no point if it is good.

      • http://www.bustabucket.com/ Matt

I’m not saying that the price isn’t appropriate relative to other laptop bags, I’m just saying that any bag costing that much is ridiculous. Seriously, just think about it. What a waste of money.

They are just playing on the specific nature of laptop bags. If it were me selling the bags I’d do it too, as long as there are people willing to pay the high price.

      • http://headsetchatter.com KP

Given the fact that I have never seen a laptop bag that truly had everything I needed, I’d be willing to pay pretty much anything for one that did.

      • Jay

The last laptop bag I bought was $120 (not this brand) That was almost 4 years ago. Others I work with have gone through 2-3 $40-70 bags in that time. If you use it every day and you don’t feel the need to change bags just because there’s a slightly cooler one out now you can get the value out of a nicer bag.

  • Bo Miller

If you want to give it away, I’ll take it!!!

  • muze

HAL stands for Heuristically-programmed Algorithmic Computer. It’s from 2001: A Space Odyssey. See how the bag is black, and the logo is red?

  • Randy

I’ll stick to my Crumpler Crisp Suit.

  • Blake

Bag doesn’t look too bad. Think I’ll stick with my Incase Backpack though. Tons of places to put everything, enough room for a 17″ MBP to be well padded plus it feels great on my back. Carrying a full backpack never feels that heavy once it’s on me.

  • Percy

As soon as the BGR special edition bag comes up, I want one!!!

    • http://www.bgr.com Boy Genius

      Such a good idea!

      • InnocentCitizen

        I’d buy a BGR badged Timbuk2 H.A.L.!

  • nibs

my guess for H.A.L. is heavy ass load

  • http://headsetchatter.com KP

Why is it that in the video the interior is orange, but on the Timbuk2 website, the interior photos show it being black?

I absolutely will not buy a bag anymore unless all the pockets and compartments are lined with a bright color. I was pleased to see on the video that they had built it with that kind of care, but when I went to actually research getting one, it seems that’s not the case. Anybody know what the deal is?

  • radio2

This thing doesn’t have a waterbottle holding compartment.

    I’ll pass.

  • http://thetrendaholic.com The Trendaholic

This is truly a dope ass bag! I wasn’t very familiar with this brand before but after reading your post and a couple of comments I’m def considering ponying up some cash to buy this bag.

  • http://www.twitter.com/jteaguenc JTeague

    What I’ve been looking for!

  • CoolKidd

Can this bag carry itself? :-)

  • Sean

    Just ordered this. Awesome!

  • Tachyonic Cargo

This bag looks hot. It would be a ‘must buy’, if it only had one strap, however.
