AMD Opteron 4000 & 6000: 12 cores, 1 chip

General

amd-opteron

Last week, we reported on several chip set announcements — of the 6-core variety — from both Intel and AMD. Today, just one day before an Intel press event, AMD has released details about its new 12-core server processing chip, the AMD Opteron 4000 and 6000. The 4000 series chip will target the low-end, energy-conscious market, while the 6000 series is for those who don’t look at the electric bill and need as much high-end horsepower as possible. AMD is touting that the new 12-core processors are more than twice as fast as the previous line of 6-core chips and, “will beat Intel’s [chips] in processing performance and energy efficiency, as well as cost per computing power.” Intel’s announcement is tomorrow… let the processor wars continue.

Wow, I can check emails 5x faster and post comments faster.

AMD’s been saying that for how long now?

Considering the performance delta between their chips now, it won’t be twice as fast even by the most optimistic standards. And of course, we have yet to see what Intel’s going to put out.

    More yawn out of AMD.

No, you can check your email 12x faster. Wow. And I’ll be always the first one to post comments.

    Intel > AMD

I would love to see AMD start taking marketshare back from Intel. I like supporting the little guy, but I built an i7 rig 2 months ago because AMD had really nothing to show. I’d love to see them get on top again.

I will get one, thats all I have to say, church.

I would like to see AMD put out something that puts them back on top. I just built a Phenom X4 955 Black edition rig and was impressed with how fast it loaded Windows 7 and ran. No dissapoint at all. For the price, AMD is still a good bargain, maybe not the best, but most software doesn’t even take care of the tech from the tech of 3-4 years ago like 64 bit.

Wow, apparently this site isn’t just an apple fanboy site, but an Intel fanboy site as well. How sad. Last time I checked, it was still a dumb idea to spend $250 on a processor, and another $200 for a decent motherboard.

Umm I dont know what you were reading but it seems that both pro AMD and pro Intel comments are disliked quite a bit. Seems like an equal number of AMD haters and Intel haters visited this thread to dislike comments and then leave. Confusing NO?

Good for u AMD. I have used AMD chips for my first 2 rigs and finally tried Intel. Honestly could not find a difference other then in the price. 12 core huh? love AMD and their prices. Might throw in a AMD chip on my overhaul this time…PRICE!?
