Sprint to announce and possibly launch the HTC Supersonic next week?

Rumor

HTC-Supersonic-Sprint-WiMAX-Android

After rumors about the HTC Supersonic have been swirling around the Internet for a few months, it is now time for the Wall Street Journal to chime in and contribute to the hype surrounding Sprint’s first WiMAX handset. According to people “familiar with the matter,” Sprint is expected to announce the HTC Supersonic next week during a presentation by Dan Hesse at CTIA. The timing for such an announcement fits in nicely with Clearwire’s promised 1H 2010 delivery date for the first WiMAX smartphone and we certainly have seen enough spy shots and hands-on videos to whet our appetite for this Android-powered 4G smartphone.

Why is it running 1.5? (Can tell, 2.1 has a new Browser icon and renamed Internet)

It’s probably an early prototype picture

Yeah, that picture is very old we’ve have been seeing that leaked shot for about half a year now. I’m pretty sure it will have the newest version of android if the Legend will have it.

:( i left sprint to go to verizon for the droid but now i want to go back to sprint for this phone and i’m stuck in a contract laaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaame

I’m currently on Verizon with a Droid Eris, and want to upgrade to the Incredible when it comes out. However, if/when I get a promotion at work (which would be to a job that requires a work cell phone), I’m not sure if I will be able to get them to just pay for my Verizon plan, or if they will force me to get a company phone through Sprint. I’m sure they’re with Sprint because it’s cheaper, but their rural coverage is pathetic around here Anyway, if I’m forced to get a Sprint phone, I would most likely spring for the Supersonic. Even if it does debut with 1.x (which I highly doubt, as that would be a VERY bad marketing move), it will be far better than the HTC Hero or Samsung Moment. The only thing that gives me pause is the 4.3″ screen, as that’s almost ridiculously huge. But I guess I’ll cross that bridge when I come to it.

Rural areas don’t have the best Sprint coverage, but it’ll switch over and roam off Verizon’s network with no roaming charges. The only difference is the any mobile any time feature doesn’t work in roaming. So you’ll get to use their network for less than their own customers do. :)

      • StevenGlansburg

ok listen… you may be able to roam on Verizon’s network with Sprint, but when you do, you get the slowest, shittiest data possible. I was furious when out when I figured that out.

      • Homer

I have the same experience with my Sprint phone in roaming as I did when I had Verizon… Sometimes it’s ok, others it’s atrocious. The only difference between Verizon service vs. roaming with Sprint is that you pay almost double per month to use the phone with the Verizon logo.

So what happens when you can’t use the “any mobile any time ” feature when your roaming? They take away from your 450 allowance?

      • Azeron

You cannot roam on Verizon for data so what is the point?

    • JASON

Yeah dude I dont know what you were thinking. Sprint is about to take over, they will have the largest 4g network for awhile so naturally the best phones will follow.!!

  • Homer

Just might have to leave my Blackberry to get this…

      iphone , man

  • fresh

oh dear god palm you are in deep trouble if that c40 is 4 inch screen

  • glass

Okay but where do we get the “possibly launch” part of the rumor from? There was nothing concerning that tidbit in the article…

  • Tony Glansburg

Sprint might just do what thy did with the Tour, and launch Sprint phones with VZW branding on them. Lol, now I’m scared to switch.

    • Roger A

When did Sprint launch phones with Verizon branding on them? I doubt it was Sprint that purposely did that, and more so their distributor they buy from.

      • JASON

        I dont remember that happening??

If this phone starts selling immediately after it’s announced, I’m going to drop my Luke Wilson-pitching carrier and give Sprint a shot.

I’ll take my chances that the 4g/3g will be just as good given my main location and travel patterns. If the plans stay as is or less, this is a big opportunity to get customers back from other carriers. Sprint may not get people they lost due to bad CS, but they have a shot at those of us who haven’t fared much better where we are.

Yeah, well AT&T use to mean quality & superiority back in the long distances days but no more. They have the crappiest service. I have signal this block, no signal next block. Uh-oh a bird just flew over my head and I dropped 4 bars, theres a cloud, opps another bar is gone. I feel like I am back in the days with tin-foil on rabbit ear antennas. I dropped them so fast and went with Sprint which I have signal all over the place except in very rural areas and I can not complain because I have a big red V phone that has problems in those areas as well. Sprint customer service has been above and beyond for me as well as their pricing plans are more then fair compared to the other greedy wireless providers that lock down and charge for every little thing.

When it comes to cellphones, ATT has some of the best no doubt but, the network is really BAD. I had Sprint in 02, I had a few dropped calls here and there, got credit for them though, then I saw a cool phone from att, it was the biggest mistake ever, outside the house I had 3-4 bars, inside the house 0-1 bars when placed about 4 feet from the floor, when the cell rang I had to run outside or stick my head out the window. Then switched back to Sprint, their network was growing quite nicely, no more dropped calls.
I share a plan with my brother, he just got the Hero, so we had to get a different plan, got billed for 2 plans, called CS and got straightened out in about 25 mins including hold time, it was pretty good, I thought it would be a pain to fix. I live in the Chicago area, go on car trips to Wisconsin, Nebraska and Texas, usually listening to web radio 128kbps or higher, losing connection a few times in a remote area in Oklahoma, driving through Route 69, that was 2 years ago.

you must have had an iphone which does lose signal like its going out of style

  • SPT

Now it’s time for Sprint to unleash the BEAST trust me I been with Sprint for a few years and I like the service it might not be as good as Verizon but trust me is close and a lot cheaper

  • JFritz

I am so ready for this phone.. You dont even know!

  • KimH

For me, this thing can’t come out soon enough. I’ve been holding onto Sprint for nearly a year since my contract ran out. I was ready to latch onto a Sprint Nexus One unless something crazy was announced. Guess what? Something crazy was announced, so I’m gonna pass on the N1.
