PayPal to open application store

Internet company PayPal has announced plans to open an application storefront in an effort to court developer business and further its online payment system. The company’s plan includes an application store and payment system for both mobile and desktop applications. “I want developers to think of PayPal first whenever they hear the word ‘payments’ and I want to know what it will take to get there. We’re willing to do it. We’re willing to innovate and experiment on their behalf and hear their feedback,” said Osama Bedier, PayPal’s vice president of Platform Business Unit and Emerging Technologies, while speaking at the Future of Web Apps conference. Bedier continued: “The wallet should live in the cloud… Entering credit card information into a mobile device is the worst user experience ever.” It will be interesting to see how a mobile application store would play out. We can assume that Apple isn’t going to let PayPal just waltz in on its cash cow — do we feel a PayPal application ban coming from the iTunes App Store? — and Android’s market is already, for the most part, wide open to developers. Nokia has Ovi, BlackBerry has App World, and Microsoft has Windows Marketplace. What are your thoughts?  Is PayPal a little too late to the game to make a significant impact? It’s worth noting that RIM’s App World is already exclusively using PayPal for payments.

Paypal is HORRIBLE. I refuse to use them EVER again. On 3 different times I had fraudulent charges from Paypal to my checking account. On the last one, they refused to pay me fully back because they said the individual didn’t have enough in their account to cover it. I DON”T CARE. PayPal STOLE FROM ME. Period.

*Yes I did file fraud papers with the bank. But they don’t pursue charges unless significant amount of money. I don’t care if it’s $5, it’s still wrong.

Only took 1 occassion for me. I am no PayPal/Ebay power user… so after 1+ year of non-use I get a letter from some collection agency, looking to score in excess of $35,000.00 from me. Logged into my PayPal account, and yup… 35 grand and change charged to my PayPal account, it being linked to several SunTrust accounts and Woodforest Banks… none of which operate in my locale. Tickets purchased for Portland Trail Blazer tickets, Seattle Seahawk games, jewelry, electronics, travel vouchers, and I live in Arlington, Virginia… so Portland and Seattle, not exactly in my commute range for sports entertainment… it was awesome. I dealt with collection companies for nearly a year before my police report, filed with the only detective in the world I assume that has never heard of ebay, finally got noticed.

My PayPal account is still suspended to this day. 4 years later…

      PayPal are crooks
A little over 5 years ago PayPal stole a total of $463.00 from me.
PayPal took the money out of my account without any notice or warning.
There was no response to my first 3 e:mails to PayPal. I was still in the
dark as to why they took the money out of my account. Searching the
newsgroups I found a phone number to PayPal. After being bounced
around to 4 different persons I did get an answer as to why they took
the money from my account. They claimed that 2 bidder had contacted them
and stated that they never received their items. As I ship all my items with
delivery confirmation. I had the proof that the items were delivered. I faxed
the delivery proof to PayPal, And here is PayPal response. “We at PayPal
don’t care about the delivery confirmation. The customers claim they didn’t
receive the items and that’s all we care about.” Needless to say I was floored
by their comment. They said there was no need to further discuss the issue and
      hung-up on me.

In the end I did get twice my money back, but it required me to be shady. No different from the stuff PayPal pulled on me and so many others.

I personally have never Paypal screw me, but there are too many horror stories out there to not be concerned.

  • Hey!

So paypal wants to start their own Handango… so? How is any alternative “late to the game”? Its not late, its another pipeline for rejected apps (rejecTED, not ‘rejects’).

This post seems a little unfocused. What’s teh point here? That paypal wants to run an app store, or that Paypal wants to get in on cloud wallets?

I would be the last to ever buy any virtual software from Paypal, good luck ever getting a return. They are there to protect the Sellers, not the buyers.. Get real.

yup-same here; had an account some years ago and right away they double charged me for stuff. Hate Hate Hate them.

I am an ebay seller, and they force you to take Paypal for payment. They charge you very high fees and are really not nice to deal with. Sellers generally dislike Paypal.

I won’t be buying any apps with Paypal. I’ll stick with Google checkout, thank you very much.

Sad thing is almost every comment on this site is from some one bitching, lying, and talking shit about this company, that company, this product, that product, too much negativity get a life

Apart from what’s said on the article, users should be aware too that the first thing the attacker will try to do is to outwit the user using social engineering. So be careful on using paypal on your mobile via this new App.

Here’s the top reasons you should use before venturing to paypal

I use paypal wherever possible, and will not buy from app world if they dump paypal. I also run a website using paypal as a seller, no problems, and remarkable facilities for a low cost. Comments above don’t fit with my experience (added by Mobile using Mippin)

I have sold on Ebay since 2004. Paypal = Scumbag. In my listings I asked for payment via Google Merchant and they suspend my auction and warn me. Their fees are ridiculous. Anyone read about Paypal freezing the account of a Non-Profit requiring more information about peration???

PayPal has monopoly on buying with merchants, so how can we “pay” for merchandise, yet NEVER open an account with these “go into your Bank Account” crooks??

Its a shame that, in the USA, we are being held hostage by this monopolistic company, who doesn’t want to move into the 21st Century method of Credit Card Authorization Holding (like every internet company does)–but want to reach into your bank account, remove money “when they want to” instead of INSTANTLY withholding the transaction amounts from the CC!

I spoke to one of their Philipino “worker ants” who told me “since 1998, we have always done business like this..we subject NEW users to pay via eCheque, wait 7-14days for authorization, since WE are fronting the money FIRST”…HELLO, this is the 21st Century and there are things like Debit Cards, where a person puts down a certain amount IN CASH before purchasing an item, and the company puts an AUTHORIZATION HOLD on the exact amount (in milliseconds)–and all is well!

..except for PayPal, the company forever mired in the 20th Century of E-Commerce mode!
