Clear to launch two new VoIP-enabled WiMAX modems with built-in ATA

Rumor

Clear may be expanding its WiMAX offerings with the select launch of two new feature-rich WiMAX modems targeting home consumers. In addition to WiMAX connectivity, both modems offer VoIP functionality and feature integrated ATA, an emerging trend that obviates the need for an external ATA device for VoIP. The first WiMAX device is the Series G Home Modem, a relatively unknown offering from Taiwanese manufacturer Gemtek. The Series G Home Modem will be available in the Las Vegas market for a final price of $69.99 when purchased outright or $4.99 monthly when leased. Next up is the Motorola CPEi 725, a consumer modem that appears to be a scaled down version of the CPEi 775 and includes VoIP, integrated ATA, and an omni-directional antenna. The Motorola CPEi 725 will launch in Portland, Oregon and will set you back $69.99 or $4.99 monthly on a lease. Both modems will be available to new Clear customers but it is unknown if they will be made available as an upgrade for current customers. Let’s hope Clear shares the love and offers these modems to both current and new customers and expands their availability outside of their select launch markets.

One real nice benefit to having Voice and Data integrated on the same modem is you will have built-in Quality of Service (QoS). That is something you really need to ensure your VoIP calls don’t drop while doing other data actions on the same broadband connection.

My son in Charlotte, NC bought a $40 modem from Clear and gave up the service after 4 days because he only got about 1Mb download speed.

Clear were very good about the cancelation and I think my son was on the far limit of Clear’s coverage but the way WiMax works would seem to make this kind of thing likely if you live far from the source.

I wish Clear well since WiMax has to have a place in the future of the Internet.

From what I understand(and I may be wrong) is that tower has a 30 mile coverage area. The closer you ar eto the towers, the faster your speed is. If the Wal-Mart rumor is to turn out true then most of america should have a decent speed coverage. I checked last night and I have 7 Wal-Mart’s within that area from my house and really hope that the rumors are true.

Clear and LTE broadband days are limited if Obama’s broadband initiative rolls out before the end of his term. Most folks would choose this free plan unless content is locked down…

If you did your research LaToya you would find out that Wimax is easily convertable to LTE. The reason that Sprint partnered with Clearwire on Wimax is that it allows them to have a 4G network ” NOW” rather than wait until 2011 or 2012.

What i would really like to see is the 33% of the U.S. being covered by June 2010…I have a feeling you are going to be really disappointed and eating your words.

It wont happen. Then he’ll come up with a new excuse and call you skippy and ask where your pom poms are. I read in anothe post where he said he is a manage somewhere. I feel sorry for his employees.

Where’s the list of all the cities that make up the 33% where LTE is going to be up and fully functioning with devices?

  • knowledgable

    in the next 6 months…

Ill answer your question when you give me a list of 33%of the nation that is going to be covered by June 2010.

  • up yours miguel

well Miguel Alverez if that’s your real name, how will it be possible for verizon to have such in infrastructure of LTE, in 2010 they might have as you say 33% but that will only be for internet use, and as cells go verizon will have to start making phones that switch from their 3g to their 4g wich means that LTE won’t be to prominent in the market until 2013 when they have more 3g around the nation. and the speed of their LTE will only be determined by how much spectrum that verizon buys so who know’s you could be upgrading that 1.5mbps to 3mbps if they don’t buy enough spectrum.
