Microsoft to cut Xbox 360 Elite pricing to $299.99, Pro to $249.99 leading up to discontinuation

Gaming

Hot on the heels of news that Sony’s PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 3 Slim would soon become available for $299.99, Microsoft has responded with a body blow. Redmond’s popular high-end gaming console is currently available in three different versions: Xbox 360 Arcade for $199.99, Xbox 360 Pro for $299.99 and Xbox 360 Elite for $399.99. While the Arcade will continue to sit at its already-attractive price point, beginning tomorrow Microsoft will drop the price on the Pro from $299.99 to $249.99 and the Elite will drop from $399.99 to $299.99. Ouch, Sony. The Pro will stay at its new $250 price point until current inventory is burned through and it will then get the axe, leaving just the $200 Arcade and $300 Elite to man Microsoft’s fort. The company claims that this move has been planned for months but we find it a bit too convenient considering Sony’s aggressive moves of late. So gamers, which sounds the most attractive at the $300 price point — Sony’s PlayStation 3 80GB, the PS3 Slim or Microsoft’s Xbox 360 Elite?

Thanks, Tarun!

    “Just think about it, adding wifi & a larger hard drive & a wireless headset is a cheap addition to the Xbox Elite, trust me they will add these soon… Also they have stopped production of the Pro model, I think they are slowing clearing out inventory…”

    but think about the money theoy would lose off of every “Improved Elite System” ..Microsoft already seels every 360 at a loss… 2ndly, they sell the wifi component for a WHOPPING $100, a 20GB Harddrive for $79, bluetooth has yet to be an option, and if their WAS an option for a Bluerayer player attchment, it would be somewhere in the range of $125-155. That being said, if these “new and improved” 200GB Elite systems ever came to the market, Micro$oft would lose between $179-$334 on EACH $300 Elite they sold… IN ADDITION to the loss they already take on every elite system…(about $75) i just dont think M$oft is willling to take a potential $400+ loss on EVERY sale…

    it just wouldnt happen… i wish it would though :)

    What makes you think xbox has better connections. I also have both and can honestly say that my ps3 has a better connection most of the time. I love ps3 and don’t like xbox. I must admit my xbox gets more playtime for the simple fact that the online community is larger and no one I know plays ps3.

    @Jouten

    I’m pretty sure I was just giving my opinion in a non-dickheadish way. But if you insist…

    I’ll buy Blu Ray whenever Sony decides on a final Blu Ray Profile. As opposed to asstastic compatibility issues for profile 1.0 movies with profile 2.0. I don’t see why I should spend $300 for the sake of having a Blu Ray player.

    God of War, resistance, and Killzone are some other exclusives for the PS3. There, a couple of more that I happen to know of. My opinion, which you so cleverly reiterated, is that Metal Gear is the only real exclusive to care about, because it is a badass series that I absolutely love. Would an ignorant xbox fanboy care about metal gear at all? Short answer, no. To this day I still pop in MGS3: snake eater into my PS2 to get my fix of CQC.

    Speaking of PS2, I HATE that there is even a bit of doubt about which PS3 has backwards compatibility and which don’t. Thanks Sony I’ll just stick to my PS2 and large PS2 lirary.

    Are YOU serious?! Gaming over Wifi absolutely without a doubt blows. Hooray, the PS3 has built in wifi but I still wouldn’t play multiplayer online over it. Especially where I live where there are only 2 cable modem providers and both of them blow.

    “…AND REPLACEABLE hard drive (any 2.5″ laptop HD will work)…”

    Last I checked I can replace my hard drive too. I have to pay more for it, but it’s certainly not impossible to replace (hint: it snaps onto the top/side of my system).

    I will now reiterate my original argument so that even tools like yourself can understand: if you are a gamer looking for a new system, check to see what titles you care about the most, then go with said system that carries those titles.

    Kthxbuhbye

    Also about a blu ray player in a 360. It would waste so much money for m$ because they wouldnt even make games in blu ray so it would be only for movies

  • Joe

    The only exclusives i play are fable and…. i dont know a kingdom for keflings on the xbox.I never got into gears of war and I bought halo 3 and hate the game with a passion. No offense to halo fans. I play alot more ps3 exclusives like resistance, mgs, killzone, uncharted, little big planet, god of war, and cant wait for heavy rain. make a list of the xbox exclusives. and when i say that i am not challenging you or being a dick i just can’t think of many that i am that interested in

    Stupid xbox 360 should not cost 299 dollars! If sony can afford drop the price on ps3 down to 299 dollars, what does it mean for xbox 360 manufacturing costs? These money-hungry bastards at MS are just making at least 100-150 dollars per console…
    It’s time for MS to suffer. They do not have any hot exclusive games compare to PS3 this holiday season. In 2010, things are looking a lot better with Ps3 with GOD of war III and FF XIV.

  • The Truth

    @ Joe

    Then the PS3 is the system you want. If you enjoy those titles more than xbox exclusives, there is no point in even getting the xbox.

    I don’t understand why people (not you, Joe) try to make a stupid fanboy argument out of this. It all boils down to where you find value. If you enjoy your PS3, good. You should, otherwise it was a waste of money. I have no problem with people who say they like their PS3. My brother in law just got one and we play from time to time. Great system, but to me there is no point in buying one if you are already well entrenched into the xbox ecosystem.

    Price doesn’t matter if you love Metal Gear, Killzone, Little Big Planet, and Resistance more than you love Gears of War and Halo. Bottom line, you will buy the system that suits your needs (taste in games) than features.

    This is not 2005 anymore, Microsoft has turn a profit on the 360 for the least the last couple of years…

    My XBOX died yesterday, so I will go pick up an Elite for $299.

  • Cody

    Ps3….no ring of death.

  • joshzilla

    I agree. xbox has better games than ps3 and netflix too. only reason to buy a ps3 is the bluray player, bluray discs have to get cheaper for ps3 to pick up sales. Only way sony makes money now is on the disc sales.

    I don’t care WHY they got it right. The point is that they did. And perhaps that factored into the Wiis design. Well, guess what, its the number one system now, so maybe that was a smart move. The thing that bothers me most about Sony is that they PROMISED full back compat from the beginning. Then they changed their minds. Super lame.

  • boogalooboy

    So let me get this straight, when the ps3 and 360 were both $399 the 360 outsold the ps3 and now both are $299 the ps3 will magically outsell the 360 – because of bluray? The same bluray that was present at $399? This of course discounts the data that suggests that most gamers dont even have hdtv’s and standalone players are available cheaper.

    Somehow, I dont see the GAME CONSOLE buying public suddenly going crazy because of bluray. Dont forget the 360 will have the Zune marketplace and will stream at 1080p and the ever-growing evidence that today’s consumer is primarily interested in media on the go and not in amassing a huge library of physical discs.

    But keep the dream alive, one day it will come true.

  • Xristo

    Never met anyone who owns a Zune, must get out more often I suppose. I still own my original PS2 and PS3. I went through about four original Xbox’s before I gave up on them. Everyone I know who owns a 360 has had the Red Ring and Microsoft still hasn’t fixed the problem, just sayin… PS3 has streaming movie capability. And yes, people do still collect physical disc for some reason (probably just habit with a little sentiment mixed in). Call them hoarders or pack rats or whatever but they still do it. I opt for streaming video myself through Roku which isn’t tied down to just Netflix. Too early to tell really but unless the new Xbox has Bluray then I predict a solid win for PS3.

  • jdiddy

    I already got a ps3 and I planned on going to get the xbox elite soon. This just put the icing on the cake.

    The price cut is irrelevant,since the WII is now a major brand. A classic example is the I Phone. Despite cheaper competitors offering the same features, it has managed to maintain its lead in the market.

    @GREGG

    Not so much, it was something about a 250GB Elite system… Nomention of wifi intergration, blu-ray, etc.

    @Stormtrooper

    nope, they realy dont make a cent off of ANY XBOX, although they do get a healthy percentage of every game thats sold, along with accessories and xbox live..:)

  • http://www.generally-speaking.com/ Jeff Awesome

    I think I’ll just wait till its discontinued fully and then get it for next to nothing, $50 off isn’t really that amazing most shops had them for around that price anyway!

  • LT In Texas

    My gut tells me as long as people are willing to buy new PS2 Slims for $99, Sony will keep making them.

    YEs, it would be nice to have backward compatibility (PS2) and current PS3 in one unit, but I suspect Sony is still losing money on the PS3, and any area they can cut corners, lower the price and sell new units, they are going to do!

    @boogalooboy:

    I think what people miss is now a $299 BluRay playin’ game console just doesn’t appeal to the GAME CONSOLE public… it appeals to anyone interested in BluRay.

    I’m not a big game player, I got the $399 PS3 because I want to play a couple of fighting games but also because I wanted a BluRay players since at the time, good ones were about $250.

    Now that the Slim is $299, $50-$100 difference isn’t that much more for me to get a gaming console, a 120GB HD, a media streamer, a media player and an Internet station.

    I was planning on buying another BluRay player but now I’ll just get a PS3… and I think there are many other non-gaming consumers out there who may make the same decision. It’s one of the reason why Best Buy and Target puts a PS3 in their BluRay player section, because they know that regular consumers will be attracted to them.

  • Leon

    As a regular consumer, I decided on the PS3 Slim after not buying any next generation video game consoles. Main reason because I wanted wifi plus the Blu-Ray player. Years back I chose the Xbox over the PS2, which at first was great with great games such as Halo. Then 6 months later they introduced the Xbox 360 which didn’t bother me at all until Microsoft pulled the plug on the Original Xbox and stopped making games. I loved my Xbox but I don’t understand any good reason why they stopped making original Xbox games when Sony still makes PS2 games. Maybe sometime down the road I’ll buy me the latest Microsoft game console.

  • beabee

    dude, the ps3 gets the YLOD which can be just as bad because. sony are absolute b*tches when it comes to replacing your console, they charge alot where as xbox its more often but its free. my ps3 recently YLOD’ed and im thinking weather to just stay xbox or trade it in and get another ps3.
