Google Voice revives free calling to Canada, eh

Services

Google Voice users with friends and relatives living north or the border, rejoice. Not that calls to Canada are overly expensive in the first place, but the Google Voice team has decided to eat that marginal expense — just as they did when they were GrandCentral — and make calling to Canada free once again. That’s right Google Voice users, the next time you need to call and taunt your Canadian friends when your team is playing the Blue Jays it won’t cost you a dime. Now if only you could initiate those calls from a nifty little app on your iPhone without having to jailbreak…

Just tried to set my GVoice to forward to my Canadian number based in Toronto, Ontario, Canada and no dice. “International numbers are not supported as forwarding phones”

  • Doug

Same with Dan L here. No dice on a 905 area code number. Perhaps Google thinks Canada has one area code?

  • Jeeverz

maybe he is right… Cuz I’m in the 403 area code and my google voice forwarding works… That’s weird.. Maybe cuz there are soo many Effing americans here..

Now I really love GV Mobile on my jailbroken iPhone

Still no hawaii support. All cell carriers treat Hawaii as no roaming, no long distance. Come on gv.

I was down to $1.50 after depositing $10. Good news is always welcome! Here is a tip we just discovered if you didn’t know, you can call your own GV number from one of your ring-to phones, hit Option 2 and place an outgoing call with your GV account. Loving this service!

As a Canadian expat living in the U.S., I have some advice for those of you who are able. If you have a friend in the U.S. with an address that you can use for bills (or possibly live close enough to the border to sign up with a P.O. Box–not sure if they accept that) then get Vonage.

I have a US number and all I have to do is either take the Vonage adapter with me or else download a “softphone” to use with my computer when I travel to Canada. People dial my U.S. number and it rings wherever the adapter etc. is plugged up.

It still doesn’t allow you to have a local landline # through GV, but you spring for the Vonage “virtual number” service which does have Canadian area codes for an extra $4.99/mo.

As far your Canadian cellphones, you might be able to rig something up using Vonage’s call forwarding to forward from the “U.S.” number to your cell phone.

    Hi,

Does the GrandCentral account work by invites? I see you are a google voice user and thought u could explain it a little bit better as I want to use this service.

    Thanks,
    Pete

    Pete,

GrandCentral no longer exists. It’s the company that Google bought to create GoogleVoice. Initially, Google didn’t develop anything with GrandCentral and it persisted for some time. However, Google then gave invites to all GrandCentral account holders and offered everyone a chance to transition their accounts before they were finally closed.

Why don’t you just use Google Voice? Most people who sign up for an invite get one within 2 weeks-1 month. You can use a proxy or VPN to activate the link to sign up, and then get a US # using Skype or some other SIP service. I’ve heard you don’t even have to keep using the VPN/proxy after the initial sign up.

Thanks for the reply. Do you have any invites to google voice? I would really appreciate if you could spare one if you did.

    Thanks,
    Pete

They’re not doing it that way for GV–I wish they were so I could send you one. You can request an invitation here: https://services.google.com/fb/forms/googlevoiceinvite/

It sucks to have to wait, but that’s the nature of the beast, unfortunately. I want a Google Wave invite myself.

    HTH.

  • Peter

Its ok, thanks a lot anyway. Good Luck with your invite :)

    Cheers,
