LG officially unveils its new Chocolate, the BL40

General

LG officially unveiled the latest addition to its Black Label series, the BL40 Chocolate. A bit of deja vu as this handset has already starred in its own photo shoot and made its unofficial YouTube debut. The red-trimmed handset has a 4-inch wide screen 800×345 pixel display with a unique 21:9 aspect ratio, 5 megapixel camera with Schneider-Kreuznach lens, 7.2Mbps UMTS/HSDPA connectivity, Wi-Fi, and aGPS. As far as release details, unfortunately all we know about this sleek and sexy handset is that it will debut in Q3 2009 in 54 countries worldwide. All else aside, we can’t wait to see how typing on this bad boy works out considering how long and thin it is. Hit the jump for a few more press photos.

    New to LG… Are they running WinMo?

  • boomy

    Nah man- they’ve been using the Verizon proprietary OS since it’s inception. I think this one carries on that terrible tradition, also.

    So you think this phone will go to Verizon? I hope so.

  • Stang68

    No, it cannot go to Verizon, at least not yet. It has GSM radios.

  • grrr

    I’d have to see it in person.

    That sucks then, would’ve included into checklist when buying.

    This thing looks like it has similar screen dimensions as the Nokia E90. Could be interesting, especially for those with big mitts.

    Whats with LG and those narrow screens, it would be pretty nice if the screen were a bit wider. 21:9 aspect ratio?! WTF is that all about?

    on paper this sounds like a pretty decent phone…but we will see wat happens.

    I can hear the comments already…”Is that a BL40 Chocolate in your pocket or are you just happy to see me?” Going to be interesting to see the belt clip cases for this bad boy! Perhaps it’s geared towards women since it would be fine in a purse.

    Verizon is getting the LG Chocolate Touch VX8575. Unsure how closely it will resemble the BL40, if at all.

    Texting on this thing is going to be a challenge. There’s no way you could do it in portrait style unless you have fingers the size of pencil lead. And then if they put a full qwerty for landscape the thing would have to take up the whole screen so you wouldn’t even see what you were typing. I mean on the iPhone there’s only about 3/4 of an inch left on the screen when you text in landscape mode and that chocolate screen is about half as wide as an iPhone’s. We’ll see tho. LG prolly found some way of making it happen like making the keys really wide with the 4″ screen. It does look very sleek tho

    @Kelly

    Is this the device that was linked to Telus’ HSPA network??

    ugliest phone. ever.

    The screen size itself is nice, but the fact that it is long and narrow doesn’t help in that department. It should have just been a 16:9 display, and made shorter and wider. I’m betting that most of us on here who post would have a really hard time typing on this.

    Good times, good times. I remember my 1st phone back in 06 I should say. It was the newly released LG Chocolate from Verizon. I despised the 2-yr contract. Verizon had reliable service but it had deadzones.

    As a downturn of the economy, I used my Chocolate on Metro PCS. Man, they provided the worst service. I only had the carrier for 2 months.

    A month later, my dad actually kept bothering me to get the new iPhone 3G. It was a waste of money and he actually bought me one. So far, I’ve loved ATT’s service. It’s fast network have proven to be quick on my iPhone.

    Nonetheless, I’m looking forward to the new Chocolate.

    @boomy
    I don’t really know much about VZW OS, do u know if this OS is any good for application like Adroid or OS X?

  • Cransr

    ok so i watched the youtube video and that makes me think the following: multi-touch, multi-tasking, an insane processor, and apparently people are carrying around computer mouses (or mice idk how that works) to make a four inch wide screen functional.

  • josh Nichols

    From the youtube video.. you can clearly see the keyboard in landscape and portrait if anyone was wondering..

    Well as a Korean my self, i do know why the companies make the phones thinner and longer. Most asians have small hands.. (true) and they are used to slim designs that looks attractive instead of bulky feel. Not to be stereotypical about my own country but the phones are becoming part of people’s appearence. Western tends to be more of flexibility in usage.
