Apple updates the MacBook Air, intros "high end" model

News

Lovers of all things tech and trim, rejoice as Apple has updated its svelte MacBook Air. A $300 price drop puts the new budget model MacBook Air at $1,499 while still coming in with a relatively impressive 1.86GHz Core 2 Duo processor, 2GB DDR3 RAM, 9400M graphics card and 120GB HDD. Also new is a more “high end” MBA which starts off with the same amount of RAM and graphics card except the processor clocks in at 2.13GHz and in lieu of spinning hard-disk drive you get a 128GB SSD. It will retail for $1,799. Yeah you read right; that’s a $700 drop in price. Congrats to Apple on maintaining that ridiculous margin for as long as it did.

    Honestly…who cares?

When you can get the same form factor from Dell, Acer, Asus, Lenovo and every other netbook/notebook manufacturer for hundreds less…what is going to make me drop 2Gs on this (after tax, warranty, etc.) when I could pick up an idea pad with better hardware for a couple hundred less?

  • NegativeJoe

    None of us care.

Heck, even Apple fanboys don’t defend the Air because even they know how crappy this thing is.

You can get Alienware with better specs AND Blu Ray for the same price!!

This is for idiot people with money to burn who have to have the latest of everything and are too dumb to realize that the only people who care are the other self-asborbed money-to-burn assholes who jealously try to keep up.

Seriously, this is the one product that none of my Mac-loving friends can justify. Impractical and overpriced… even more so in these current times.

If you want something, and can repeat CAN afford it, then why not? this is how the world works, well at least the USA people. i make you want i sell you happy? part of our capitalist heritage. dont give me that crap about capitalism evil yada yada, and the glock picks itself up and shots right? you listen to rappers and crap as well so shut up.

  • brujosalazar

US? you have that kind of authority guy? to state us? wow amazing!

  • brujosalazar

@Negativejoesie comment about these current times… Please the reason lays on people who buy big things and have small pay, in order to keep up with the joneses or the puffy combses as current times say ghetto fab… work save invest educate, words not know by many, but visa, master, discover cards, blame blame everone but ourselves are even in the childrens vocabs?

I realize that everyone likes to pick on Apple because of the price… but why does nobody compare this to how we buy our cars. Sure, you can get a V6 car for $20k but then again, you can have yourself a V6 E320 Mercedes for $45k. I’m sure there are many little features that make a difference in the price but your still not comparing apples to apples (no pun intended).

I have a first generation air and am willing to pay the extra margin for good design. It looks good. That means something to me. I’ll pay for that. No one else sees it so it’s not about showing off. I just value design. .

  • Nicholas

Oh give it a rest. I have a first generation and develop iPhone applications on it. It is fine, and I can’t wait to upgrade. I need a Mac obviously, and it is the lightest available.

  • Jason Bourne

LOL. Brujo did you forget to take your medication today?

What the hell are you yapping about? Capitalism and ghetto Fab? GTFOHWTBS. We are talking about laptop computers and their respective values.

  • blake

if we are comparing cars here. it’s as if apple just puts a and extra coat of gloss on the hardware, but other than that is identical to the other car. and apple makes use premium gasoline only (software)

  • Jason Bourne

The thing is Apple =/= Mercedes. Alienware and Falcon Northwest hardware and configurations crap all over Apple by a long shot and they are still competitively priced comparably. Those are the “mercedes” brands of the computing world.

Given, certain Macbook models have slight (arguable)advantages over other similarly priced laptops but the only thing that sets the Air apart is its slim form factor…which would be cool if every other manufacturer didn’t replicate the exact same form factor, with better hardware under the hood for much less. Wtih Free OS’es and Windows 7 thrown in the mix…all comparative advantage is gone (beside the douche appeal). I’m not a Mac hater…but they struck out with the Air.

  • brujosalazar

@Jason Bourne, meds seriously guy? that’s a wee bit old no? GTFOHWTBS? them there are fighting wurds pardner… what the heck does that mean? i am simply stating that a band of individuals who really crave something, but can not afford, decide to attack it, as if this is going to magically make it theirs?

  • Khristopher Garcia

Blake, that’s not exactly a fair comparison. All PCB, transitors, and silicon isn’t of the same quality… just because the speed is rated the same doesn’t mean it’s identical hardware. You do pay a premium for the design and the quality of the hardware.

As for software, I wouldn’t compare Apple’s software to premium gasoline because in comparison, Windows software can be expensive as well.

btw, my VW CC requires 91 octane, but it’s considered to be a “budget” car when compared to mercedes. The premium gasoline is needed because of the high compression, but the high compression is one reason why the car is able to get better gas milage. It’s hard to make a direct comparison.

    @Jason Bourne
But I can’t legally use OSX on my Alienware. Personally, I love OSX … and this is why my next laptop purchase will be a Macbook Pro. If there were ultra cheap laptops with new hardware that can only run Linux, would you bitch because economically you should buy the Linux laptop and not your alienware because it is for people who want to throw their money away? You will still most likely go for the expensive alienware because it can run Windows so you can run your games.

People will buy hardware to support their software, not buy hardware to save money and throw away your choice of software. Even if the hardware is more expensive.

And like other people said … if you have the money, then why not? If you can afford it, go with one that will run the software YOU WANT. I want OSX.

  • brujosalazar

@jasonbournes quote”beside the douche appeal” Classic approach guy classic! by the way, are you saying you have douched before?

  • brujosalazar

    tastes great less fi…?

  • Jason Bourne

    LOL.

What is there to really crave about the air though?

And i’m pretty sure the averge working American adult can afford to buy the product, they just chose not to.

There are gold plated phones that sell for hundreds of dollars…if people really wanted to buy them they could but they recognize the lack of value and express their disgust at the product. That doesn’t mean that they are secretly envious and bitter…it means they genuinely think its a stupid product at an unjustified price.

Another thing that we hae in America besides freedom to purchase our desires is teh freedom of speech.

  • Jeff C.

Personally I love the MacBook Air and now that it has the cheaper price point, and still a 128GB SSD there is almost no reason why i shuold not get one…OK there is no CD-DVD drive…when was the last time anyone has used one of those? I mean do you buy CD’s still or do you go to the Itunes store or steal it or however else you download it, you download it you do not buy CD’s or DVD’s…unless they are blu-ray.

With regards to the design and the wieght it is second to none, the design is amazing, it is REDICULOUSLY light, and has a lit up keyboard adn the LED display..phenomenal.

The only thing I am concerned about is the computing power for online, movies, itunes, and chat all at once. Because I am considering selling my Macbook for the Macbook Air. I want to have the air as my stand-alone computer and have that be the only one I own.

Thoughts? comments? concerns? Please do not respond to hate on the macbook air, i would like some constructive thoughts on if it can work as a stand-alone home computer for the things i stated above. thanks!

  • Len

I think this price reduction pretty much excites a current mac user.
If you wanted a mac book, u would have already gotten one by now.
If you don’t have one, I highly doubt you would switch from a pc, especially at this price range.

  • RandyB

I love my MBA regardless of the jerks who have nothing better to do than criticize them. It is a fabulous machine — ask anyone who has one!

Unfortunately, I was extremely disappointed with the new versions Apple announced today as I really was looking forward to upgrading. Why do they still limit them to 2GB of RAM? Yes, forget about running Fusion or Parallels with only 2GB (it works but just too slow). So I’m really pissed about this! Damn you, Apple!
