Alltel drops 2-year contracts, keeps 2-year contract prices

If you live in Canada and are currently tied to a 3-year contract we suggest averting your eyes immediately. Beginning tomorrow, Chad’s crew will slice it’s top contract term in half from the standard two year deal to just one year. Subsidized handset prices however, will remain as they are now. Yep, 1-year contract, same handset subsidies. Awesome. The change will apply to each of the 91 divested markets — sorry, new Verizon customers — and will include markets to be gobbled up by AT&T. Paul Bowersock, Senior Sales & Operations Leader for the Alltel Divestiture Trust, had this to say:

Wireless customers have been waiting for an option like this for a long time. With a 1-year contract option, customers can take greater control over their wireless experience, having the flexibility to choose their contract length and the latest innovative handsets at the most competitive price possible.

Sounds good to us! The change applies to both new customers and existing contract renewals. Question: Think the big four will follow suit?

    I have a feeling the others are going to go the other way… Like 3 year contracts. Or maybe no contracts but you pay full retail.

    Verizon has 1 year contracts, but the phone price goes up.

    kinda clever.

    but we all see it in the long run coming. new phones which are being released at the current pace, you will see all the carrier’s doing their best to clear the inventory as well as they do their best to stock ‘em.
    the more handsets they are, the cheaper they going to get.

    Well as often as most phone makers are upgrading their models, this would be a great idea for the major carriers.

    This won’t be a trend. The only reason Alltel’s doing it is because they aren’t going to exist in a few months.

    This is strictly for the divested markets…keep that in mind. Why would the other carriers compete with the remains of company with a very temporary lifespan?

    Alltelkid, wait until june 12th….

    Everyone else…. Getting rid of inventory? They have 8 new phones mapped threw the end of the year. Actually 1 is launching next week. And even when someone does decide to buy the rest of alltel, its still gonna take a year for FCC to approve everything

    If you have bought the phone in the last 15 days and go back to the store, they will change the contract to a one year. If it’s over 15 days since you bought it, you are in it for 2 years.

    Hey we have 1 year contracts in Canada. You save $50 on the full price. Of course you still have to pay the $35 activation fee. :(
