T-Mobile launches 3G webConnect Laptop Stick

Accessories

It took a while, but it’s finally here: T-Mobile has announced the launch of the 3G webConnect laptop USB stick. While other carriers have already been offering similar products for quite some time, T-Mobile users can enjoy 3G speeds with one from their very own carrier. Of course, we all know that T-Mobile’s 3G footprint is young and rather small, but the USB stick is compatible with EDGE if you can handle those speeds. The webConnect stick can be had for $49.99 with a 2-year contract, or $99.99 with a 1-year contract, and if you’d like to pay month-to-month without contracts, it’s $249.99. Quite pricey, if you ask us. Like other carriers, there is a 5GB limit per month for $59.99 a month. The USB stick also allows you to connect to 802.11b/g WiFi hotspots and doubles as a memory stick with an 8GB capacity. If mobility is critical to you and WiFi isn’t always available, it might not be a bad option.

    Yay t-mobile, or something….t-mobile has 3G???

5GB even on TMO for an area of 3G smaller then any other carrier? EFF THAT! But at least the no contract option is there.

  • Jeremiah

Wow I really wish they had lowered the price to be more competitive and make up for the smaller footprint. EPIC FAIL T-MOBILE.

I have T-Mobile and I wish they would put more money into their 3G so this would actually be worth it. I mean do away with the 5GB limit already. I use way more than that and so do many other people who surf the internet and download files on their laptops everyday.

  • Dave

it’s actually only going to be available in 3G markets. so anyone in edge markets will only be able to buy it online or through telesales. :)

  • hondoman

5gig is a softcap, and if you read what they are planing for 3G the density will be increased. I know I have drank the kool-aid but it taste like mom used to make

I’d say the price is worth it if you’re in a market covered well by 3G and/or the places you go are.

I use VZW’s aircard service and although it may work in many areas, I stay here in Los Angeles so the added coverage in South Dakota is of no importance to me.

What really matter is if it works in the areas you need it to. That determines if it’s worth it or not.

T-Mobile, although generally a value player most likely is not trying to attract the mass adopter and will likely keep this price steady in the beginning as they test the strain against their network. I bet you they will drop the price down the road.

I wonder if the folks over at tmo USA are giving each other high fives on this one.

I would have purchased this if they had offered it at a better price. I mean, what gives? Why would they charge customers the same amount as the other carriers whose 3G footprint is larger and faster? It seriously does not make any sense. If they lower the price by at least 10 more dollars, then I’m on board. I currently have the Blackberry Curve 8900 and would love to own this as well. I’m going to college this fall and will seriously need a laptop stick soon. Hopefully they lower the price of this thing before than.

  • NickyHilton

Oh yeah, I love the colors on this laptop stick (black and green). I think it’s seriously cute and beats the other carriers laptop sticks in terms of overall looks. lol. T-Mobile change your price on this thing already!!!

  • Mike M

Looks like a cool little usb stick !

  • mingkee

if you have unlocked 3G phones, even nokia 6263 or TM506, get $40 Total Internet instead and tether

    big step up

  • Miguel

    Wait a Minute…..Since When did T-Mobile have 3G??? Lol

  • blur(p)s

5GBs… Pfff* I’m sticking to the tethering actioon. ^_^

And yeah, the color choices are pretty sick. good job TmoOo.

T-Mobile must enjoy not selling stuff. They’re insane. They can’t possibly think that ANYONE would be stupid enough to actually purchase this at 59.99 a month? WHY? I could go out and get an AT&T/Sprint/Verizon data card with probably twice the coverage of T-Mobile for the SAME price. They definitely need to be more competitive or this will be just another paperweight like the Cameo.

  • Erica

@ Ryan: How much 3G coverage does the average aircard user need?

These devics are usually used on the fly when away from a much faster wired ISP.

T-Mobile should have 200 million POPS covered with 3G by later this year. That covers a large amount of areas where most people spend their times.

I can understand someone on the fringe of town or who spends lots of time in rural areas preferring a larger 3G carrier, but for most users in populated areas, it shouldn’t be such a big deal

  • GlockBuster

T-Mobile is the only carrier of the 4 main carriers that doesn’t throttle your usage though. It will always run at max available speed. Also, I wouldn’t doubt if T-Mobile’s 3G will run faster since it doesn’t have near the amount of users on it that AT&T, Sprint, & Verizon have.

  • Ryan

@ Erica: The point is, that if its the EXACT same price as your competitors while your competitors give you a much more expanded coverage area, you’d have to be crazy to not pick one of the competitors.

If someone were to offer you a brand new Lexus for the same price as a Kia, which would you choose? Get it? More bang for your buck.

Now if T-Mobile lowers their price and provides acceptable coverage in your area, then I’d say go for it and don’t look back.

But in my experience, even AT&T in a well established Metro area (Orlando) is still subpar compared to Sprint & Verizon. Now, could you imagine T-Mobile (shudder)?

Why settle for less when there is no incentive to do so?

  • Galvatron

ATT coverage is horrabl her dropped calles like crazy but tmos not doing so well heer there is a hireing freeze here dunno about your neck of the woods

Bell soaks you with their data coverage of these cards, most due. I bought a Bell portable modem. But as long as I have a plugin (or a car adapter), I get connected for a hell of a lot less than $69 for a lousy 20megs…

  • surfer_chick

Lame… I checked it out yesterday at a local store.

It is definitely NOT slim, it’s rather big and bulky looking. Even kinda cheap looking.

And 8GB? Lame… even AT&T & Sprint have larger capacity than that!

Why would you pay $49 or even $100 when you can get a better card for Free elsewhere.

On a positive note: atleast it’s WAY faster than their EDGE network card.

  • http://www.twitter.com/IowaWireless Demilo

Well AT&T has yet to update their 3G to 7.5 mbits like T-Mobile. So the reason their coverage area for 3G is smaller is because their advanced 3G costs’ more. & AT&T’s 3G coverage is larger because it is a lower grade AKA lower speeds G1 beat I phone I’ve had both+AT&T broadband speeds on 3G are lower than that laptop stick I HAD it. +EDGE on T-Mobile runs around 250-320k & AT&T EDGE runs around 70-135k so the reasons speak for their selves the fact is T-Mobile has a smaller but more advanced & expensive 3G system so quit your bitching.

  • Bluzulu

Total ripoff! Why would anyone pay 50.00 to ANY of these carriers for only 5 GB a month? I went into a T-mobile store and asked the sales guy how many he had sold since its launch. He said…Honestly? ONE! One in six months. That’s pretty damn bad! Good luck T-mo, Sprint and Verizon with this one. People will never bite at 5 GB a month. Because this deal bytes! No pun intended.
