Ringtone maker adopts ‘pay what you want’ distribution model

General

Radiohead was the first band to gain recognition for applying a ‘pay what you want’ distribution model to an album and despite its resounding success, not many bands have followed suit. Perhaps it was the hype that made their little experiment a success. A handful of bands have given it a shot since then but they hardly gained the media blitz enjoyed by Radiohead and results have been mixed. Surely this distribution model has its place somewhere however, right? RCP Tones, a ringtone maker we’ve covered before here on BGR when discussing our deep unrelenting hatred of lame ringtones, is giving ‘pay what you want’ a go with one of its recent ringtone album releases, Electronic Ringtones Volume 1. The album consists of 45 original studio-quality ringtones (in iPhone and standard MP3 format), none of which will cause people to give you the stink eye when your phone goes off in line at the supermarket. RCP allows you to sample several tones in the pack and if you like what you hear, the album is yours at any price you see fit – even if that price is $0. Unlike the typical ‘pay what you want’ model however, RCP caps the price at $8.99 so even if your father is the Monopoly guy and you wipe caviar from the corners of your mouth with $100 bills, the most you can pay is $8.99. What do you guys think? Does ‘pay what you want’ have a home in ringtone sales? We think Sony should give it a try with the PS3… Its revenue can’t get much worse, can it?

    Worth a shot .

Nothing worse than paying 2.50 to 4 bucks for an embarassingly shitty ringtone .

But there are websites that let people make their ringtones for free already anyway .

I’ve never understood why someone would pay $1 or more for a low quality snippet of a song they already own. Even when I was just using a crappy Sanyo flip phone back in 2003 or so there were sites that let you upload a clip or midi file and it would send it to your phone as an attachment. The ringtone market is a sucker’s game.

I live next door to Sir-Mix-A-Lot, or as I like to call “Anthony”. By the way things look, he could use some royalties coming his way…hell, even Kid Sensation (aka Xola now), rolls a Geo Metro…no joke

ya but this isn’t just another ringtone collection. These sounds are created in the spirit of the old school synthesizes of the ’80 and the ’90. Synthesizers like the amazing MG-1 and the most amazing Korg Mono/Poly which i’ve used when i was like 12..lol. My brother had a lot of friends who wanted to be Depeche Mode back in Mode’s hay day. They’ve got some authentic vintage sounds here that u can’t really get anywhere else unless u make em ur self using Propeller software with many many VTS samplers and Oscillators.

And they’re saying that they’re gonna bring out Vol 2 which uses the Classic Moog Minimoog and the Casio CZ101.

    Good find. :)

Ringtone sales shouldn’t have a home at all, at least not in its current state. For original content specifically made to be ringtones, I think this model fits very well.

As for paying ANYTHING for a ringtone that you can just as easily cut yourself with any number of free audio editing applications? Well that’s just ridiculous.

in the age of pirate bay and free streaming everything why do you think anyone would actually pay to buy a ringtone when the option of free is present? this model is flawed its like the honor system or something… i mean i SHOULD donate to wikipedia but why whip out the plastic when someone else will probably pick up the tab? dick move i know but seriously c’mon
