Roadsync 4.0 for S60 brings HTML email support to exchange sync

Software

It took a third-party developer to bring push HTML email support to the world’s most popular smartphone OS. We’re not sure how to feel about that but the bottom line is Dataviz has done what no one else could do to this point with the latest version of its widely-acclaimed Roadsync solution. Roadsync is not the first S60 application to support HTML email – ProfiMail by Lonely Cat Games has supported HTML email for a very long time – however this is certainly the first application to add HTML support to Exchange which is still one of the most popular mobile email / PIM sync facilitators in the world. Also, the native S60 email client kinda sorta attempts to provide a workaround by including the original HTML files it parses as attachments, allowing the user to open them in the S60 web browser. Regardless of whether or not you think that solution is laughable, the native email client doesn’t support Exchange. Nope, that just leaves RoadSync; one of the most popular Exchange solutions available for S60. It provides a direct connection to your Exchange server and supports active email sync, contact sync (with photo support), calendar sync, task sync, access to global address lists and even remote wiping. At $50 for a single user license, Roadsync is certainly not cheap. It does however, come with a more-than-ample 30-day free trial and a 30-day money back guarantee on top of that. In other words, you have 60 days to decide if Roadsync is right for you. Fair enough.

    Wrong as usual BGR. You’re really lost these days. Mail for Exchange does of course support Activesync Push Exchange (thus it’s name…duh).

    What the hell does that have to do with anything? SEVEN supports Exchange sync as well. If you have a version of MfE that supports HTML email however, which is what this post is about, you’d be the only person in the world who does.

    Good call dude, thanks for stopping by.

  • backbeat

    ^Easy there. In all fairness, I think he was just referring to the post’s statement: “Regardless of whether or not you think that solution is laughable, the native email client doesn’t support Exchange”. A simple misunderstanding perhaps? :)

  • Mickliq

    Zach I guess you’re not very good at accepting that you were wrong. Read what backbeat wrote and stop being such a hothead.

    What does Mail for Exchange have to do with the native email client? Nokia’s S60 email client does not, in fact, support Exchange.

    Usually don’t like to talk about other products on a different blog but doesn’t this remind you of the iPhone?

    I don’t mean to split hairs, but Mail for Exchange is standard fare for many E/N-series phones versus what you’re [accurately] referring to as the S60 “native” email client. I understand the distinction, but there is very little to be argued about.

    Thanks backbeat. I’ve been using MfE on and off for about 2 years now. The very reason it was developed of course, was to address the fact that the native email client has never and will never support Exchange – as I stated in the quote you mentioned above (you know, the one Mickliq then referred to in an effort to backpedal).

    I’ve been wrong plenty of times before and I’ll be wrong plenty of times again. This however, is not one of those times. MfE is a supplemental OEM app and is not “the native email client”. I typically ignore comments like the first one above but every once in a great while, a shining beacon of idiocy catches my eye and just has to be addressed. ;)

    The default mail client DOES support HTML, only not as a default. It saves time to not load the HTML file and read just the converted text. Reading in HTML is as simple as hitting the HTML attachment, which always works well, even with embedded video. S60 and Mfe are ubiquitous, and available for almost all S60 devices.

    Now for some intelligent conversation. BGR’s readers and writers are hardly polite anymore. Let’s not spoil a good article with the regular bickering. Alot of my readers love this site too, but have complained about the atmosphere. Lets respect the BGR and keep it trill.

    ^ Unfortunately, this ia akin to claiming that the Blackberry native email client (prior to 4.5) supports html. But, who _realistically_ wants to download attachments just to see the html? No one in the general population, I would suspect, which is where the bread-n-butter market is located.

  • Mickliq

    Never backpeddled. I consider an app that comes with an E71 (Mail for Exchange) to be native, so who is backpeddling? Anyway, misleading article from BGR as *always* of late and terrible attitude.

  • http://www.symbian-freak.com christexaport

    You know what, Zach Epstein? You should be embarrassed!

    First, you made a mistake in your post. RoadSync didn’t bring HTML support to Exchange Sync. Some of us are using HTML right now. It requires you asking to see it, requires an extra button push, but works. Saying it doesn’t because its not by default is a misspeak. YOU CAN VIEW HTML! And these guys didn’t do it first, ok? Take it from this Symbian Freak. Put your iPhone down and learn another platform.

    Mfe is in fact an app included in many firmwares. Your article gives the impression most S60 devices can’t support exchange out of the box, when probably more S60 devices use Exchange than any other mobile. Wrong. Nokia has even moved to put it on MOST models from now on.

    Secondly, were I your editor, I’d cut you loose, fired! NEVER speak to your readers, which create revenue for the site, disrespectfully. He was upset that his expert source, BGR, was giving bad facts. He may have been less than polite, but YOU are the professional, right? Carry yourself like one, and stop starting arguements.

    Its sad, but the biggest jerks on this site are its immature staff. Grow up and represent BGR with respect. Don’t forget, our readers attend conventions and press events, too. Don’t think you can’t be touched. Thugs read, too. Show everyone respect. You want readers. If they disagree with you, respectfully state your opinion with bolstering links and statements, and let it stand there. And we’re not politicians. Backpedalling isn’t condemnation of anything. Changing your mind or words is responsible and good if you’re correcting issues. Changing your ability to speak to people with class is something you should backpedal towards yourself.

    “It requires you asking to see it, requires an extra button push, but works.”

    For real man? Do you know what that extra button push does? It opens that HTML email… In the browser. Your statement is akin to saying Outlook supports HD video because you can click a Vimeo link in an Outlook email and a page will open on your PC playing the video.

    “Nokia has even moved to put it on MOST models from now on.”

    As of today, the overwhelming bulk of S60 handsets ship without MfE – they ship with what the world refers to as “the native email client” because it has no sensible name. Nokia calls it “Email”. MfE on the other hand, is called MfE.

    Anyway, as stated, Roadsync 4.0 is the first S60 email client to support HTML email and Exchange.

    Here on BGR, where we actually display comments beneath our posts and encourage conversation, we can converse however we want. Welcome to the free world. I’m typically very cordial here but when someone begins a comment with “Wrong as usual BGR. You’re really lost these days.” and then is completely inaccurate, I feel like responding. I can do that.

    It’s funny by the way, that you say “the biggest jerks on this site are its immature staff” when pretty much the only time I see mention of your blog is when one of the authors is posting something obnoxious in the comments section of another blog.

  • Seriously?

    Symbian-Freak still exists? lol i can’t even understand what those fools are talking about. And their forum, forget it.

    Zack, you did go a bit overboard here but you’re right, Mickalicky or whatever was aggressive from the start even though he obviously has no idea what he’s talking about. And yes, he was backpedaling.

  • http://www.bgr.com Zach Epstein

    Well english is not the first language of many of the authors over there but that doesn’t mean they don’t offer good content from time to time. That’s not a fair thing to say. I used to enjoy reading S-F years ago actually, but constantly seeing them troll forums and post obnoxious comments on tons of blogs made me delete them from my reader.

    You’re right though, my reaction was harsh. Too much adrenaline from the Giants win perhaps. My bad, done with, I’m over it. No more responses here.

    I just went to christexaport’s blog. Holy jesus what a fuckin train-wreck. Thanks god I’ll never use a phone with Symbian so I’ll never have to look at drivel like that for info. S60 needed an overhaul like 10 years ago – it’s like watchin a movie in black and white.

  • Seba

    Wow, this went south pretty fast…

    @Mickliq you’re wrong, deal.

    @backbeat Mickliq is wrong, deal.

    @Zach calm down.

    @christexaport go back to the minors son, this is no place for you.

    Back on topic, I’m downloading the trial now. Roadsync is expensive but it would be nice to have Exchange support on my E71 that doesn’t blow.

  • http://www.symbian-freak.com christexaport

    Back to the minor leagues, huh? Good one. ;) All the good ones start somewhere. Maybe while I’m there, we can write more stuff for BGR to report, since we both report each other’s news.

    The Symbian-Freak community is respected globally, and the creators of devices, apps, and news. We are many times the first with prototype devices and cutting edge applications. I myself am respected at all corners of the globe for my contribution to the mobile industry, my online community, PhoneReport, and technology as a whole. I will survive if you are disenchanted by my presence. Enjoy yourself. I just want all readers and writers to respect each other. I’m no more special than a 5th grade student, but deserve to be respected as much as another. What is the point of dissing other sites, this site, or each other? We can only raise the standards we hold ourselves up to, and hence the examples we set for future professionals.

  • backbeat

    @Seba: What, specifically, is incorrect with this statement?: “Mail for Exchange does of course support Activesync Push Exchange”.

    Deal.

  • backbeat

    @christexaport: Since you’re simply attempting to be constructive, why don’t you take your own advice when making such a hypocritical fool of yourself with statements, such as “What is the point of dissing other sites, this site, or each other?” immediately after committing this very sin. Go and sin no more. Please. ;)

  • http://www.symbian-freak.com christexaport

    @backbeat,
    By all means, I agree with you, but I don’t think I diss this site. I’m a regular reader, and want this site to keep up the US carrier focus. I’d be lost without you sometimes.

    I went through some mess recently, and was mentally troubled. I became argumentative towards readers, and it had a negative effect on my status in the industry, my community, and our readership. I had to readjust my attitude, and be more empathetic towards users, even if they are rude or incorrect. They are just consumers and hobbyist with alot of emotional interest in this industry. You can’t expect a fool to not stumble, but can expect an opportunity to teach and impress with humility. The rude tones keep good commenters from wanting to enter the discussion. Just my opinion. I’m not perfect, and will cuss me out a rude cat sometimes. No one likes a stupid ass. But tolerate fools, because they all learn one day, and don’t usually die fools. I had to get myself in a good place, too. Did prison time a few times and all that. Its a process, growing. Easy for some, harder for others. Obama is a great example of how to handle a hot head.

    We’re all just phoneheads. We should be getting along better.

  • backbeat

    @Seba: Yeeeaaah. That’s what I thought. Pussy!
