Please join me in a silent prayer for my iPhone…

General

I completely destroyed my iPhone. Like, totally. Thanks to the good folks at cnn.cn, I ordered a black back cover to try and pull off the tedious task of switching it out. (By the way, does anyone think that the black battery cover might show itself in the European version? The cover looks completely OEM.) Little did I know, Apple is smarter than the average phone manufacturer and the exceedingly well build quality hurt me in the end. As you can see from the pictures below, the back cover has side rails inside it — but they are actually glued on! In addition, the volume up and down buttons, silent switch, and lock button are all screwed in. Those came out fine along with the headset jack, but the side rails are where it got really tricky. Apple used a blue type of glue that I have never seen before, and I got excited and didn’t properly dissolve the glue. So sad. Everything else on the iPhone is fine. If you’re up for trying this yourself, all pieces of the puzzle are included and I have no problem giving this away. One man’s downfall can be another’s gold, I guess. Hit us in the comments if you want a shot at becoming the official BGR iPhone repairman! Winner must post pictures of the switch process to further embarrass me…

UPDATE: Great. iPhone activations are down for the count at this moment…

I’m always very do it yourself, I would really enjoy an iPhone even if it took a bit of effort to use. :-)

Hey, I think I can fix it. I’ve had great luck with cell phones, and pda’s. used to make pda’s from parts from ebay. i may be new to this site, but I subscribe, and check it lots. I wouldn’t let you down.

BG send it to me. My studies (college) were in electronics. OK it was about 20 years ago and we still used transistors the size of small housing estates, but let a brit have a go and see if I can get it working in the UK.

I know that everyone in the world is clamoring to get this, but I would love a crack at it (excuse the pun). If I can repair my Nokia N80 after it ceased to be a slider phone (it actually became two slider phones, sort of…), than I might be able to fix this too. Anyway, I’d love a shot.

All I do all day is work on phones. It’s a fun job. I pop open every phone I can to replace keyboards, screens, etc. I manage about 1,400 of them for the company I work for.

I’d love to give it a shot. I assume you’ll just pick a person from these comments?

I see what happened to the old cover plate but is there any damage to the phone casing itself? I’m sure the new cover could be put on just fine but getting it off a second time might be ‘interesting’. Let’s hope the batery lasts a while.

It wasnt a black back back cover but a friend scuffed his up pretty bad and I replaced it with an OEM silver last week. It’s not easy (more time consuming than anything else.) I painted the chrome apple logo on the back black and it looks pretty sweet. Just make sure you buy the plastic case opener tool and take your time.

BG – Have you given it away yet…if not, PLEASE pick me! I love to take things apart and fix them :)
