Back in September, during Apple’s latest iPhone press event, the company announced that the iPhone 7 camera would be capable of capturing photos featuring a wide color gamut that wasn’t possible on older models. Instagram’s Ian Spalter also took the stage to reveal that the Instagram app would eventually receive an update to support wide color capture and display, and on Friday, the update quietly rolled out.
If you own an iPhone 7 or an iPhone 7 Plus, you will now be able to capture and view wide color photos for the first time in the Instagram app. These photos should be noticeably more vibrant than standard photos, but keep in mind that you’ll need to be using an iPhone 7 or 7 Plus to see the difference.
In addition to wide color photos, Instagram has also added Live Photos support to the app, allowing iPhone users to turn their Live Photos into Boomerangs (which are Instagram’s version of GIFs, by the way).
As 9to5Mac explains, if you want to create a Boomerang using a Live Photo on your device, you first need to swipe up from the Instagram Stories camera, select a Live Photo from the camera roll, 3D Touch the image preview that appears to convert in into a Boomerang and then share it to your feed.

According to Instagram’s Mike Krieger, these features have been slowly rolling out to Instagram users since December, but as of today, virtually everyone should have access to them. Also worth noting: you don’t actually have to download an update for these feature to activate. They’re just there.
