What made Donald Trump’s successful run for the White House all the more impressive was that he managed to defeat Hillary Clinton even while subject to any number of lawsuits. One of the more notable lawsuits plaguing Trump during the recent election centered on his involvement with Trump University, a for-profit education company that promised to teach “students” the ins and outs of striking it rich in real estate via a smattering of online courses and seminars.

The lawsuits involving Trump University were varied in nature, with some alleging that the name itself constituted false advertising (it wasn’t technically a University) and others alleging fraud, with some specifically claiming that they were urged to go into credit card debt in order to pay for the seminars.

Now comes word via Reuters that Trump has agreed to settle pending lawsuits involving Trump University for a cool $25 million.

U.S. President-elect Donald Trump has agreed to settle lawsuits relating to his Trump University series of real estate seminars for $25 million, a source familiar with the situation said on Friday.

Claims brought by New York’s attorney general will represent roughly $4 million of that amount, the source said.

The settlement amount is noteworthy in and of itself given Trump’s previous statements during the campaign that he could have easily settled the cases for very little money.

“It’s something I could have settled many times,” Trump said not too long ago. “I could settle it right now for very little money, but I don’t want to do it out of principle.”

During the campaign, Hillary Clinton often brought up Trump University as an example of Trump’s unscrupulous behavior.

As an aside, this CNN interview with a former Trump University instructor is worth taking a look at.
