The quest for great iPhone apps is ongoing and it gets more difficult each day, as thousands of apps continue to flood Apple’s iOS App Store. Every once in a while we catch wind of a nice addition that is offered for free for a limited time, however, and Wallgram is one such application.

Wallgram for the iPhone serves a single purpose: it takes photos from Instagram and turns them into pretty terrific wallpapers.

Instagram remains the most popular mobile app on the planet for posting and sharing images, but what happens to all of those great photos once they’re posted? In most cases, they slide down users’ timelines until they’re forgotten forever, but now there’s a way to put all those photo filters to use more effectively.

Capable Bits’ Wallgram app allows users to instantly transform their Instagram photos into terrific looking wallpapers. People can also do the same with photos posted by their friends, or even use the Explore function to grab popular photos of Justin Bieber and whatever else happens to be trending on Instagram at any given time.

I tested the app and it works as described, though I find that results are much better with busy photos or pics where the subject occupies the majority of the frame. Wallgram fills the space above and below square Instagram images by repositioning sections of the main image and blurring them above and below the picture.

Wallgram is normally a hefty $3.99, but it’s free right now in the App Store and can be downloaded by following the link below in our source section.
