OnePlus has never been one to follow the crowd. After launching with the custom CyanogenMod ROM, the company began work on its own dedicated Android spinoff called OxygenOS. We still don’t know much about the software, but on Thursday, OnePlus opened up about the team behind the Lollipop-based ROM and their vision for the future of the OnePlus One.

The first question that OnePlus wants to answer is why they’re building a new ROM in the first place.
“By doing so, we can offer better localization and faster updates. We can directly implement user feedback and make it easy for the OnePlus community to shape our ROM and create the OS that they want to use. Integration between hardware, software, and the cloud will become more seamless and unified for everyone using a OnePlus device.”
It’s all about staying up-to-date and interacting with the community, a community that has made this startup a resounding success in a nearly impenetrable market.
As for what we can expect from OxygenOS, OnePlus promises that it won’t ship with any bloatware and the platform itself will be lightweight and simple. The added features, such as tap-to-wake and customizable navigation buttons, won’t distract from the phone, but will instead make it easier to use.
OnePlus still hasn’t set a release date, but “a fully-stable build” is currently in the testing phase, so it shouldn’t be too much longer. If you’d like to know more about OxygenOS, the OnePlus team is hosting an AMA on r/Android today.
