Once again, Nintendo will be forgoing a press conference this year in favor of an online streaming Digital Event. It might sound like a worrying concession from the struggling Japanese company, but stage presence doesn’t make much of a difference when no one’s buying your home console. We need to see properties both new and old at this event to give us a reason to get excited about Nintendo again.
This is a make or break year for Nintendo – without a significant first-party lineup or signs of life from third parties, the underdog of the new generation might never recover. Super Smash Bros. for Wii U is sure to impress, a new Star Fox or Zelda will delight the hardcore fans and the 3DS will keep accumulating a solid slate of games, but if Nintendo is ever going to compete with Sony and Microsoft again, the company needs more than a few decades-old mascots.
Watch the Digital Event right here along with us to see if Nintendo is finally going to turn things around.
