The king is dead… long live the king. Samsung recently sent out invitations to a press conference that will take place ahead of the annual Mobile World Congress trade show in Barcelona later this month. Dubbed Unpacked 5, the presence of “5” in the event’s title caused the tech press to jump to the conclusion that Samsung’s next flagship phone, the Galaxy S5, would debut at the event. That notion remained speculation until Wednesday morning, when The New York Times confirmed that Samsung’s new Galaxy S5 will in fact debut at the company’s February 24th press conference.

While “disappointment” has been the tone of recent coverage surrounding the Galaxy S4, Samsung’s current flagship phone remains the fastest-selling Android smartphone of all time, having managed shipments totaling 10 million units in the phone’s first month of availability alone. Within 6 months, Galaxy S4 shipments had reached 40 million units.

Where the Galaxy S5 is concerned, The Times says we can expect Samsung to tone down the theatrics this time around so the singing and dancing will likely be kept to a minimum. The report also notes that Samsung should and will shift its focus away from gimmicky features in the Galaxy S5.

Hmm, where have we heard that advice before?

Samsung’s new Galaxy S5 is expected to feature a new AMOLED display with 2K resolution that measures about 5.2 inches diagonally. Reports also suggest the phone will include a quad-core Snapdragon processor or an octa-core Samsung Exynos chipset depending on region, 3GB of RAM, 32 or 64GB of memory, a 16-megapixel camera, a 3.2-megapixel front-facing camera, a 3,200 mAh battery and Android 4.4 KitKat.

The NYT also says that Samsung will unveil a sequel to the Galaxy Gear smartwatch during its event later this month.
